I'm not sure if this has been posted, but I do think he has a point. Last night our fans didn't show up until they very tail end of the game. Can we honestly say our fans care about winning, or are we just fascinated with a shiny new arena? I know that all of us care about it, but are Nebraska fan so absorbed in the culture of football that they can't wrap their heads around the concept of a winning basketball team. While our fans do show class, we severely lack the ideology of how to act at a big time basketball game. Once again, I am addressing general fans. It annoys me when I have a guy turn to me and say I hope they run the option on this play to get the win ( yes this was said to me); granted it was a joke, but get over football when you're in the damn Bank. For god sake's Michigan was in town, and we can't have the crowd be on their feet for a majority of the game? It is severely frustrating that not all are "N" to create an environment that opposing players are scared shitless to come into.

Nebraska fans are no different than anyone else.  It's another tired meme to call them out as being nonchalant about basketball.  It's a lazy excuse, IMO, for explaining away a close loss at home.

They (we) are able to be plenty loud and create a hostile environment.  I remember some mighty loud games in Devaney during the 90's, we aren't strangers to creating a hostile environment at Nebraska.  Barfknecht mentioned the Iowa State fans and how they "create the spark", but he neglected to mention the 35 years of decent to elite basketball they've put on the court.  He didn't mention the Big 8/Big 12 championships that those fans have witnessed in their lifetimes, or the Elite 8 appearance.

It's a culture, and an identity that is forged over long periods of consistent winning.  We don't have that culture.  The fans will come along, they just need to not be disappointed more often than not at home.  Now yes, you can say I'm arguing the wrong side of the chicken/egg dilemma when it comes to fan atmosphere at home and fielding winning teams, but I could also counter by reminding you that the students were not there for the most part, and that's where it starts.  It always starts with them.  They'll be there and they'll be a factor.  I have no end to the amount of faith I have in the passion and dedication of our student fans.

P.S.  Remember the Iowa game just a week ago?  That place was a friggin mausoleum for most of the night until we made it close at the end.  We aren't unique.  Lee just doesn't have anything good to write about right now.  And he's kinda lazy.  So he writes a bitch piece about the fans.  Way to endear yourself to the major part of your readership, Lee.

I'm just thrilled we have 15K fans showing up after 15 years of the 2nd division.  Let's face it.  People have lots of choices on how to spend their entertainment dollars.  It's up to the coaching staff and players to find a way to get the fans off their seats and on their feet.

FWIW, that article was written by Dirk Chatelain, not Lee, which in my opinion, explains a lot.

Very well put. "The fans need to get into it" stuff is beyond lame. (somebody can provide an appropriate youtube clip here) Maybe at halftime the true fans who know what the rest of us are supposed to do should gather at midcourt and show us how to do it.

Ah, you would be correct.  And yes, it does explain a lot.

I thought it was really loud at times, but it was tough to keep the noise level going because UM shot so well from the field, NU didn't get enough defensive stops to put together a 8-0 or 10-0 run that really gets the crowd going for an extended period.

That's right. They answered a lot of our baskets.  The crowd would get really loud after a made basket, but then Mich would answer on the other end that would just suck the life out of the noise, at least momentarily.

There is two sides to our basketball fans.

On one side they are the most loyal die hard sports fans that exist on this earth.  They support the team and show up through over a decade of mediocre to bad basketball.

On the other side they wouldn't know how to cheer and make an intimidating home court environment if we hired the cameron indoor cheer squad to train us.

Nebraska will never have a consistently loud football stadium or basketball arena.  That is just the way it is.

except for the 90s, when we were good and had a tremendous home court environment, obviously...

This is ridiculous, our fans are pretty great for how awful we've been and they'll get better as the team does

Those were some good days. Plays like this (although it wasn't a true basket) certainly made the place rock:

I'm just throwing out absolute speculation just for the sake of argument, but how much do you think the success of our football program and the marketing/interest it created influenced the success of our basketball program? I know that National Championship winners (particularly in football) has proven research to show that this leads to increased tuition for the university. It certainly could have had little to no effect at all - just a random thought to spark conversation.
