Oddly, if you add up all the scores from all 6 writers at CBS in the link that Badgett Fan just posted, and then divide by 6, we get the same "adjusted" score as Penn State, both scoring a 10.833 on average.  Tie breaker goes to us, though, because we have the best ranking at 8 and the fewest 12 rankings.  So, the composite of those six writers has us at 11th in the B1G and PSU 12th.

Notably, there is no cross-over among the top 6 and the bottom 6 as ranked by those 6 writers.  They don't have all the top six in the same order but they all have the exact same top six and the exact same bottom six.

Everyone has MSU, MU, tOSU, Wiscy, IU and Iowa as the top 6 in fairly much the same order.  And everyone has the same bottom six including Ill, Purdue, Minnie, Us, PSU and Northwestern.

Interesting.

Personally think that Minnesota and Northwestern could be in for rough, rough years.

Penn State had one of their best guards transfer to Arizona State.  (Maybe he'd rather be in the State of Arizona than the State Penn.)  They could have trouble too.  And I've just never felt that a son of a coach should earn a plumb job just on name recognition.  He's unproven, just like Pat Knight.  And that turned out so well for Texas Tech.  Just ask the guy who Minnesota just fired.

Nebraska nearly sweeps the lower teams (loses one to Illinois and Purdue) and picks up a wins against Wisconsin, Iowa and Michigan State.  Spanks IU in first meeting. Loses in 2nd round of Big 10 tournament. Finishes 7th in the B1G.

Picks up a 9 seed in the NCAA tournament and loses to 8th seed Memphis in the first round.  History waits another year.

Wow... thats a bold prediction... BUT I LIKE IT!!  We will be the surprise of the year in the Big 10.  NO ONE is giving us a chance which may help us out!

I know the schedule sets up tough for us with home games versus away games.  Seems like particularly in the first half of conference play, we're playing the lower tier teams on the road and the upper tier teams at home.  But I seriously cannot see us finishing last in the league.  I see maybe a tie for 9th.  I think we win at least 6 conference games and maybe 7.  And 8-10 is not out of the question either.  If we don't improve on last year's record, I'm on record that I will be disappointed.

I don't think we finish last--there's more weakness in the conference this year than last--but the B1G is still a powerhouse and we're underestimating the league again by jamming us into the top half because our toy is shiny and new.

I'm guessing 9th or 10th right now, but the reality is that we'll have no idea what this team is going to look like until they play a few games. And like last year, he good news is we'll be challenged early and often, so we shouldn't have to wait long to get a glimpse at the real 2013-2014 Huskers.

Athlon has us 12th as well.

I think we're in the 7th-8th range personally.

Penn State, Northwestern, Minnesota fall off.

I think the top 6 are set as well.

IMO, Illinois, us and Purdue are all in a dogfight for those 7-9 spots and spots on the bubble.

If we avoid injuries, we should battle for at least the bottom of the middle rungs. Last will not be an option. If we do worse it will be because of the government shutdown

I like that way of putting it.  We should be challenging for a spot in the middle third of the conference.  Perhaps bottom middle, but still not bottom of the bottom.

With only one scholarship senior on the roster.  And only three juniors, at least two of whom are likely at the bottom of the regular playing rotation.  The future's so bright.  B)

I picked up the SN preview yesterday - dropped it when I saw the cover, then decided I could just tape the cover to a dartboard after I read it  ;) so decided to purchase it anyway.

I'm always curious where they slot our non-con opponents, kind of get an idea about strength of schedule:

*exhibitions

  • *Late Oct (closed scrimmage) - S Dakota St, 3rd of 8 in Summit (tie 1st in Summit reg season last year) (UNO is picked 4th, by the way)
  • *Nov 4 (exhibition) - UNK (D II)
  • Nov 8 - Fla Gulf Coast - 1st of 10 in Atlantic Sun (2nd reg season last year)
  • Nov 12 - W Illinois - 5th of 8 in Summit (tie 1st last year)
  • Nov 17 - S Carolina St - 12th of 13 in MEAC (tie 12th last year)
  • Nov 21 - vs Massachusetts - 5th of 13 in Atlantic 10 (tie 6th last year, 16 teams)
  • Nov 22 - vs New Mexico - 1st of 11 in Mountain West (1st last year, 9 teams)
  •        OR - vs UAB - 7th of 16 in C-USA (tie 7th last year, 12 teams)
  • Nov 24 - vs Clemson - 14th of 15 in ACC (11th last year, 12 teams)
  •        OR - vs Davidson - 2nd of 11 in Southern Conf (1st last year, 12 teams)
  •        OR - vs Georgia - 12th of 14 in SEC (tie 8th last year)
  •        OR - vs Temple - 8th of 10 in American Athletic (tie 3rd in Atlantic 10 last year, 16 teams)
  • Nov 30 - N Illinois - 11th/12th of 12 / 6th of 6 in West Division in MAC (tie 11th last year, 12 teams)
  • Dec 4 - Miami-Fla - 12th of 15 in ACC (1st last year, 12 teams)
  • Dec 8 - at Creighton - 3rd of 10 in Big East (1st in Missouri Valley last year, 10 teams)
  • Dec 14 - Arkansas St - 5th of 10 in Sun Belt (3rd last year, 11 teams)
  • Dec 21 - The Citadel - 10th of 11 in Southern Conf (11th last year, 12 teams)
  • Dec 28 - at Cincinnati - 4th of 10 in American Athletic (9th in Big East last year, 15 teams)

Then in the Big Ten our "two-play" opponents are projected to finish:

  • Michigan - 2nd
  • Ohio St - 3rd
  • Indiana - 6th
  • Illinois - 7th
  • Purdue - 8th
  • Northwestern - 10th
  • Penn St - 11th

And our "Single-play" opponents are projected:

  • Michigan St - 1st
  • Wisconsin - 4th
  • Iowa - 5th
  • Minnesota - 9th

Overall I'd say a slightly softer schedule than I would've guessed at first glance ... of course that's assuming the Sporting News has projected everyone correctly. And since we know they've mis-projected Nebraska at 12th ;) , maybe we can't trust the other picks all that much either.

It's certainly nice playing Northwestern and Penn State twice.  Michigan State is on the road, which, since we likely lose it either way, is fine because it means that Minnesota ends up being a home game, a team we have a good shot to beat. And then pick 'em between Iowa and Wiscy.  One is on the road (Iowa) and the other at home (Wiscy.)

What that means is that we have home games against all the other teams picked to finish in the bottom half of the league.  In fact we have home bouts against all the teams picked 4th through 11th EXCEPT Iowa picked 5th.

So, yeah, actually not so horrible upon further consideration.

I question whether Iowa can actually take that next step and be something other than an NIT team, and think that Illinois is more like a bottom 4 team than a 6th-8th place team.

I would be very surprised if Iowa isn't pretty damn good this year and does not take that next step. They have a lot coming back, and I suspect a couple of them will be considerably improved this year.

Looking at Iowa's schedule, I'm not sure they learned their lesson, it looks remarkably similar to last years and if they get bogged down in conference play, which is possible, could keep them out again.  I think they've got the talent to make the next step, we'll see if they can make it.

The yahoo article is actually from last year.. NOV 5 2012.  Tubby Smith was on the hot seat, and Tim Miles and John Groce are new coaches.

haha, that explains it (it will also teach me not to just google something, look at the predicted finish, copy, and paste).  above post fixed.

I share uneblinstu's opinion about the problems posed by their lackluster nonconference schedule.  HB's correct to note the likely improvement of their younger guys.  However, Eric May was kind of important for them, and I just don't know that a team lead by Marble and White is truly ready for the breakout year anticipated by some.
