What’s the argument for retaining Fred, other than avoiding the buyout?

It's almost always worse when you start over. Arguably that's different now with the way the portal works.

Sam has one year left. Could easily see Fred retiring after next year no matter how great or poorly it goes. Can’t imagine he wants to put his heart through much more of this stress.

That's the trajectory I've been seeing regardless of the outcome.

We were a made basket away from probably being in the ncaa tournament.  That's good historically for Nebraska basketball.  Just keep building.

Gonna have to find some guys in the portal and see what we have.

Essegian

Hoiberg

Mast

Berke

Janowski

Frager

Rhymes (not sure if he plays right away or not)

Hopefully Griffiths stick around (redshirt?).

So we need a point guard, a center/forward and what else?  Two more forwards and two more guards?

Fred will not retire. He'd be leaving to much $$ on the table.

A starting five.  Sam, Berke and Connor off the bench.

I see it going one of three ways…

If Nebraska cared or had any expectations at all, they would not retain Fred. They would bring in a new coach and start investing more money into players. If Nebraska cared some, they would bring back Fred and pay for better players. If Nebraska doesn’t care at all, they will retain Fred and give him a similar player budget next year.

I fully expect Fred to come back and to have a similar budget. That’s what Nebraska basketball is.

Our problem is we overreacted to our NCAA tournament loss and took players we shouldn't have.  Meah, Worster were probably guys we shouldn't have taken.  We were hoping Meah would be a rim protector, and Worster would be a defensive stalwart and not allow dribble penetration.  They were also black holes on offense, and did not succeed on the defensive end.

But, having said that give me this season every day of the week.  We were a few shots away from the NCAA tournament.  The Big 10 was such a balanced league that we ended up missing the Big 10 tournament.

Worst collapse in Nebraska ball history?

Possibly the program in the worst shape in the whole BIG?

Best thing about this program is the fan support evident by another sell out today somehow.

if your not already go support the woman’s team in the big dance, two massive injury’s to the team and coach Williams still got them 20+ wins a 2 victory’s in the big ten tournament.  Hopefully get an upset or 2 in the big dance now

Things can be negotiated. Fred isn’t coaching until 2028-29 just to collect every penny on his contract.

Fred is not going to leave $$ on the table...period.

He certainly won't take a negotiated buyout now, not with his son still on thet team. Maybe after his son graduates, maybe.

Going to have to extend his contract at least through the '29-'30 season for any hopes to be mildly competitive next season.

Sadly— it’s hard to find big collapses for a program with success (or lack thereof) like ours. So possibly biggest collapse but partly because there isn’t a ton to compete with it.

We have to replace a ton of production but the losses of Gary and Bryce should free up a bit of salary ca… I mean NIL.

Anyone can transfer anytime and we're just buying guys out of the portal along with an occasional high school transfer.  The thing where you extend a coach 5 years to 'show commitment' is an out of date concept.

Are you sure about that? Have any evidence? Which coaches out there have 3 year or less contracts that aren't on the hot seat? How are those teams doing?

This is what tips the scale for me for why I think Fred gets/deserves another year. I am actually optimistic about next year. I made my peace with this season weeks ago. You guys will get there too eventually 😂

Notes from UNL

*-Juwan Gary finished with a team-high 24 points, his eighth 20-point game and third in a row. Gary averaged 23.0 ppg and 6.3 rpg over his final three games.
*-Sam Hoiberg finished with a season-high 12 points, his first double-figure effort of the year. His previous high was nine vs. South Dakota on Nov. 27.
*-Rollie Worster tied a season high with seven rebounds and had five assists without a turnover.
*-As a team, Nebraska finished with six turnovers tying a season low.
*-Brice Williams was held to a season-low seven points, only the third time in 31 games he didn’t finish in double figures. Williams finished conference play averaging a league-best 20.7 ppg in Big Ten action.

Are you Fred's agent?

Sure, that's why I've been posting on this board since it's inception. That's why after his 3rd year as the head coach I wanted him fired.

You made a statement that I completely disagree with and your response is... Trust me Bro.

Get back to me with any shred of evidence you have to back up your statement.

FTR, I wish your statement was true.

I always said I didn't expect Nebraska to be a top 20 team every year, but if we could be competitive and make the dance or be close to it regularly, I would be happy.  As frustrating as the end of this season was, we have had three straight seasons that I would have been fine with a few years ago.  I certainly don't want to start over with a new coach.  Yes, I do think we were out coached today but it happens.  The Big Ten was extremely competitive and balanced this year and we were still just a couple open shots by a couple of our best shooters away from the tournament.  Hopefully Coach has some transfers in his pocket ready to play next year.

You're not wrong to be optimistic. In the era of the trasfer portal fortunes can be quickly turned around.

We need to get very active in the portal right now and decline any post season tournaments we get invited to.

He got two years added last year (deservedly) and has 4 years left and is coming off a very disappointing year. We didn’t make our conference tournament…giving him another year added on would publicly say we have zero expectations of our MBB program.

If we’re being objective here, it’s hard to pick a Big Ten program that looks to be in worse shape heading into the offseason than us. We could pull off a miracle in the portal, or we could not and then the likelihood of next year being another bottom 3 finish is very high.

The best way to show commitment for Fred heading into 25-26 would be a significant investment in NIL and see what he can do with it. Him being able to tell 1 or 2 year transfer rentals that he has a 5 year deal instead of a 4 year deal seems irrelevant to me. We barely recruit high school as it is.

Fred said multiple times on the radio today we are playing in the postseason no matter what.

Last season his contract expired in 2027, 3 years out.

He got coach of the year and Nebraska expanded him to 4 years out, 2029.

You're telling me that with just 3 years left, like he had when he was coach of the year, he will be too handicapped to sign guys that will be on the team for 1-2 years out of the portal? Ok.
