If this is true, then it pretty much solidifies Nebraska is in the bottom of the barrel when it comes to NIL, right in line with Minnesota. 

 

I realize that $6M is significantly more than the reported $2.3M NIL budget this past year.  However, this must be put in context.  2025 is the first year that schools can use the Ath. Dept. revenue to directly fund NIL, so that is going to significantly boost the overall numbers of all schools.  This would indicate NU is allocating about $3M from the athletic department to men's basketball.  We know that the total amount available from the ath. dept. is $20.5M, so 15% to men's hoops is not totally unreasonable.  But all schools will allocate at least this much as well, so it still comes down to the NIL available from donors and collectives.  As stated above, Maryland has $10M from one single booster solely for men's basketball and Indiana has a "blank check".

 

If I am Fred, knowing what I have coming back (which isn't much, but should include 4 solid rotation players in Mast, Berke, Connor and Sam H), I would put the bulk of the available money on getting 2 or 3 studs and then just try to fill in the gaps.  I would rather have 1 or 2 studs to combine with Mast, Connor and Berke than 7 below average players.  And if you fill the gaps with 6 under the radar "cheap" players, maybe one of them surprises and outplays his contract.

we obviously need 5 to 6 players just to fill out the roster. But ultimately, I agree with this you’ve already got a bunch of spots at the bottom of your roster with players who aren’t very good filled.   You need to spend heavy on three guys.    If you don’t get them, you’re in a lot of trouble.    I’m not exactly enamored with the thought of taking the guy from Italy, but I suppose that’s a decent lottery ticket to take if it means you’re saving money to spend on three bigger fish.

If true— and we want to be competitive— we’re going to need to greatly increase our NIL allocation to basketball. I’m not saying we should have an open check book, but a budget that’s on par with Minnesota is going to need to be changed.

Minnesota's roster budget was $1.1 million this year. Ben Johnson, a Minneapolis native and Minnesota alum, got a raw deal. 

 

I'll still always be of the mindset that coaching and culture matters in college sports. And every year we'll still see low budget teams win in March. But $1.1 million when some of your competitors in conference are working with $6-10 million is pretty ridiculous.

Is that reasonable? The $6M that Minnesota is shelling out is a significant investment for them. They were at $1M last year. Feels like $6M is the middle of the pack B1G neighborhood we’re gonna have to live in.

Color me skeptical on both. Both have just one NCAA win and haven't shown they can win at a high major yet.  I just don't think they're Dusty May type hires like some are expecting.

I think the skepticism on Nico is fair.   Especially at a place like Minnesota where resources are and have been thin.    I think Devries is legit.  And he’ll have no shortage of resources at Indiana.   Plus his kid is pretty damn good and gives him a very nice building block

We added 7 transfers to the squad this year. If we're defining Brice as a stud and Juwan as above average, then in my opinion our additions went like this: 

 

0 were studs

0 were above average

3 were average role players (Essegian, Morgan, Berke)

2 were below average role players (Meah, Worster)

2 were complete whiffs (Ulis, Griffiths)

 

That's a pretty crazy miss rate. And yet we were that close to being a tournament team.

 

Some considerations:

*Essegian could be viewed as above average for 2024-25 but hard for me to think that when he wasn't even a starter on a team that didn't make the Big Ten Tournament

*Morgan and Berke are players who could have seen bench minutes for most Big Ten teams

*Worster was what he was, which put bluntly is just not good enough for a team competing in the Big Ten 

*Meah is a borderline complete whiff but a little unfair to him because we used him in ways that went far beyond his skillset and we didn't actually utilize him for what he was OK at

You need to re-calibrate your numbers.  $6M was "middle of pack" last year.  Starting in the fall of 2025, $6M puts Minnesota and Nebraska at the bottom of the barrel.  The reason is  because the revenue sharing dollars factor in for the first time this fall.  And ALL the teams get this revenue share.  So if a team had a $6M last year, then it increases to $10M this fall, and so forth.  That is why Nebraska's NIL is increasing from $2.3M to $6M. Most of the increase is NOT because of more 1890 style NIL, it is just adding the revenue share from the athletic department.
