Some positives.

Sam Hoiberg: In the last 7 games he's 12/15 from the field and 6/8 from three. Also had 20 assists to 8 turnovers, and 8 steals. He only played 16 minutes today and 17 minutes against Rutgers.  On the season he's now shooting 54% from the field, 47% from three and 82% from the line. He's improved as a secondary ball handler. And still doing all the little things that don't show up in the box score. Maybe needs to play more.

Andrew Morgan. Should start playing more than his 17 mpg.

Ahron Ulis. 10 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover (that was arguably Brice's fault). Played good defense and handled the full court pressure very well.

We seem to still be struggling to figure out what Berke is in the offense. But his shooting is improved. In the last 7 games he's 10/21 from three. Now up to 35% on the season.

Connor is still shooting the ball with confidence and shooting it well. 41% on the year on high volume. He's still moving relentlessly off the ball. IMO it's on his teammates and coaches to get him more shots in rhythm.

Still thinking we need to prioritize offense more. We do have guys who can make shots. Play the guys listed above, along with Brice and Juwan. When this team is making shots, the defense amps up. That's not how it should be with a team who is supposed to have a defensive identity, but it is what it is. Last year at this time, we had a much, much better defense than we do right now, while playing guys who should be negative individual defenders (Mast, CJ, Keisei). Prioritize shot making, and the momentum and defense will follow.

Our defense was good enough to win. They shot 40% from 3 but they also shot 48.5% from 2 which is their second worst home mark this season. We held Queen to 3.

To me it was missed FTs and mindless turnovers...execution stuff.

Also this is the second game in a row we've lost by three to a team that made a 3pt shot to end the half.

You're right. 69 points allowed should be good enough to win. Going back to what someone posted the other day though, I do wonder how much energy we expend on defense and if that leads to said mental breakdowns on the offensive end, especially the road. Some of the turnovers were unfathomable, and some of our shots just looked lazy/tired.

Notes from UNL

*-Andrew Morgan went over 1,000 career points with his basket at the 10:44 mark of the first half. He has 1,012 points in his career
*-Morgan finished with a season-high 17 points on 7-12 shooting, topping his previous best of 14 at Michigan State
*-Morgan finished with 17 points, his 10th double figure game off the bench this year. NU now has 19 double-figure efforts from its bench in 2024-25.
*-Ahron Ulis set a career high with 10 assists.  He had eight against Western Michigan on Nov. 22, 2021 while at Iowa. His previous best at NU was three on three occasions, the last on Dec. 7 at Michigan State. He is the first Husker with double-figure assists since Alonzio Verge Jr. at Ohio State on March 1, 2022
*-Juwan Gary went over 1,000 career points with his tip on with 3:08 left in the second half. Gary now has 1000 career points

I don’t remember Meah seeing the floor the second half.

He didn't at all. They rotated Berke and Morgan at the 5. If he's completely out of the rotation, which I don't think he is all the way, I wonder if Gavin gets a shot. But it was a message sending benching for meah for sure. We'll see what Wednesday brings

100 losses in 5.5 years for Hoiberg.

Supposed offensive genius with a timeout in his pocket, standing with his hands in his pocket on the last possession.

I assume this will get downvoted too?

At this point I'm for keeping Fred for one more year so before next season I can argue with the board one last time how Sam Hoiberg will be in the top 8 in minutes and probably should be higher 😂

I’m willing to let this season play out. We’ve earned at least that. I also am not willing to say it’s over by any means.

But I will not be a happy camper if we fail to Dance this year. Inexcusable.

Lot of games left though.

Uhlis played very little against Rutgers - and not at all in the 2nd half.   But I think he had a career high (at least at Nebraska) in minutes today.   Fred does seem to use different lineups from game to game based on what he thinks is working (or not working).   I expect Meah to start vs USC.

Me too honestly. Just something I'm monitoring, because if there's a clunky party to the starting lineup, it's him for sure.

Hoiberg Fire-O-Meter

10 = Izzo Lifetime Contract

1 = “Fire Mike Woodson” chant at halftime.

I was at 6 before this game and I believe for the first time in quite a while I’m going below a 5 to the fire side.

One nice run, that ultimately still didn’t result in anything, and the rest has been absolutely trash.

As a matter of principle, firing talk can only occur in the rock bottom thread

(please no one actually revive that one from the dead)

I feel like last year bought him two more. Not that it matters because what's a "next years"  roster worth anyway, but I like what we have coming back next year.

Oh for sure— I don’t think we pull the trigger this year no matter how mad I or HHC get. Especially if we finish with a half a pulse.

Seems like we blew opportunities for lobs to break the press when he was in there. He might not be a very good basketball player but we don't exactly utilize his strengths most times.

I'm not sure Meah will play many minutes against this weird USC roster where they have 1 post player and KenPom lists Saint Thomas as either a PG or a center

I’ve never really bought into the talk of us having a great defense. A good defense…..okay.  I’m not a fan of doubling down on the post and leaving their three point shooters open.  I absolutely hate watching our guys turn to run 10+ feet and then wildly jump in the air to block a three.  Yes, our defense looks great against a team that can’t hit a three to save their lives, but if they’re hot from three, we’re cooked.

The defense Purdue played against us last week was absolutely amazing.  They weren’t giving any of our guys any breathing room, but watching our guys on defense that game, we were giving up 2-3+ feet of space.

I like Hoiberg and I’m not ready to call for his head, but I do think they need to make some changes to their defensive philosophy.

Isn't Nate Loenser the one in charge of the defense?

Maybe it's just me, but it feels like our offense might need some more work than our defense does.

Clearly there are things that need to be fixed on both ends.  We need to learn to finish better at the rim.  It seems like that has been an issue for many years now.

Live I thought they should have called one but I'm not sure now.  I wonder if he was hoping they would find an easy layup and then use it after a potential free throw miss?  Or maybe thought Maryland would setup a foul late and send us to the line?  Essegian very well could have made that three.  He had a decent look.
