Former NU coach & Butler's AD Barry Collier set to retire

In 2000, Collier was named the head men’s basketball coach at the University of Nebraska. Taking over the Cornhuskers allowed him to reunite with Nebraska’s Athletic Director Bill Byrne, who worked with Collier during his days at Oregon. In Collier’s six years at Nebraska, the Huskers progressed from an 11-19 record to 19-14 and earned their second Postseason NIT appearance in three years. Included in the 19 victories in 2005-06, were a pair of wins over nationally-ranked teams, giving the Huskers five upsets of "Top 25" teams in Collier's last three seasons.

 

During Collier's tenure in Lincoln, the Huskers saw an unprecedented rise in academic standing. Nebraska had a league-leading 15 first team academic All-Big 12 selections between 2003 and 2006, including two academic all-district performers in 2006.

I loved when they went to the Barn & kick 10 kinds of dog crap out of Goldy in ‘03. Also remember when Nate Johnson had a tryout with the Lakers. Barry had some Big shoes to fill, but all in all he had a solid if not remarkable run with the Big Red.

He will probabky remain on NIT selection committee to kick us in the nuts when we get fourth in big ten and go on road in NIT.

I really liked Barry. I think it was just bad timing here, don't think he was a bad coach by any means.

Man he looks old.  Good thing none of us have aged since his coaching days at NU!  I think he was instructed to run a clean program and bring the graduation rate up, which he did. He just thought he could win with coachable kids that did not have the athleticism most of his conference opponents would have. It did not work and it was too little too late when he tried to recruit differently.  He seemed like a good guy the little I interacted with him.

I feel it's a little more nuisanced. He was a good coach in the the right situation. That situation was not Nebraska. And boy did he ever leave us in such a crap position with how he left. However, I'd have probably jumped ship too at the 1st chance with that administration. From the outside looking in it was probably about as low of support the basketball program had from the University. I did enjoy the $99 season tickets during that time though

I would definitely take the $99 season tickets but Barry was a huge disappointment at Nebraska.  But let's be fair, he is not the only coach you can say that about at Nebraska.  Barry had a 36 - 60 conference record at Nebraska and played an extremely boring style of basketball.  He for sure left Nebraska in a mess but was just glad to see him go and can't blame him for leaving.

He came off a bit wooden so relative to Danny Nee he came off as petrified wood. Too bad we didn't hire him as our basketball AD instead because he certainly knew who to hire.

wish bc happiness in retirement. the black cloud hanging over husker hoops transcends any one personality. I mean, it's patently obvious were playing basketball on pet semetary or something like that. we don't need a coach. we need a multifaith gaggle of exorcists.

I agree.  He was remarkably bad coaching Danny Nee's talent his first year.  His first year and his exit will forever live in Husker basketball infamy.  He's not evil like the A.D. whose name will never be mentioned.  He's Mike Reilly.  Not a slam, but not a compliment, either.
