I'm going to get killed for this, but it's been bugging me for a while.

I'm not singling anybody out here nor talking specifically about this site, but I absolutely hate that fact that people are so willing to make fun of college athletes.  Yes Andre is overweight.  Who are we to make fun of him.  Grown adults making fun of a college player.

Yeah he has struggled a ton this year.  But he is also coming off of a knee injury and from the sounds of it hasn't fully recovered.  That, his struggles, and match up issues isn't playing.  But like people said before, when he was healthier in his first year he was a good role player off the bench.  We was suppose to be a role player last year but was hurt.  This year he was forced to play a larger role.  It's not his fault Diaz left.  It's not his fault Doc offered him a scholorship and didn't bring in other recuits which would allow him to stay as a role player.

I think everyone is over sensitive to this.  Giving an honest evaluation of someone based on what you see and stating your opinion is not making fun of a player.  We live in a society today where everyone can't accept criticism and falls apart when something is said about them.  Sometimes things are said in a joking manner and shouldn't be taken serious.  It's not like anyone is saying they suck or they are a piece of garbage.  They are two different things.  Go ahead and swing away at me for being critical too in player evaluations but I'm just giving my opinion on what I see.  I see players being discussed on here all the time and when I state facts and what I see I get hammered for it.  It just shows passion from fans and caring about a product.  You think there is no one on a husker football board or anyone on here who isn't criticizing Taylor Martinez?  It comes with being a Division I athlete at a major program.

Yeah, some of us have eyesight that isn't as good as it used to be.  Be a little sensitive, man.

I'm always amazed by how much sympathy I see from fans for players on scholarship who are extremely overweight, as if the weight gain was somehow beyond their control and they're just poor victims caught in the crossfire.

I certainly don't see it that way. I see guys who are undisciplined and take the incredible opportunity they've been given for granted. It's just very hard for me to muster up a lot of sympathy for an overweight player or get bent out of shape about folks writing a few funny lyrics about it.

Whether it's Andre Almeida on the basketball court or players like Tobi Okuyemi and Jay Guy on the football team, if you're fat and you're on scholarship, I've got a problem with you and I'm not sympathetic. Get your act together! Sorry if that seems insensitive to some of you, but scholarships are earned. It's a two-way street. The commitment shown by the team to the player has to be reciprocated.

Being on scholarship doesn't mean that you decimate the training table every night like a competitive eater downing Nathan's hot dogs. I apologize if that makes me a mean, insensitive bully to some of you, but I have little sympathy for overweight athletes on scholarship, and if it means they get zinged occasionally by the lyrical stylings of Mr. Gordon Lightfoot, then so be it.

Well, in THAT case ...

Does anyone know where the leftovers go

When Andre raids the fridge after hours?

The experts all say they'd have let Andre play

If he'd shed 50 more pounds behind him.

Now, compare to the original ...

Does any one know where the love of God goes

When the waves turn the minutes to hours?

The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay

If they'd put fifteen more miles behind her.

How about us fat people in general?

You know we fat people have rights too!!!!

Remember I would live much longer than a skinny person if left on a deserted island. ;) (That's cause I would kill the skinny people in their sleep and eat them, First guy ever to gain weight on after a ship wreck.) <_<

I have no problem with fat people in general, but you're not an athlete on scholarship at Nebraska (God help us if you are), so knock yourself out.  :)

So, just doing the compilation editing ...

The legend lives on from the Amazon on down

Of the big guy that Kent called El Grande

Twice as big as a tree, with a vertical of three

Whopping inches, he was often called Andre

With a load on the floor, 330 pounds or more,
The Almeida could not make a layup.
That big ship, it seems, stored too much in its seams,
And was beached on the bench, it couldn’t stay up

As tall as he was wide, there was no place to hide

When he hit the buffets in Wisconsin

As big eaters go he was bigger than most

And he liked fried potaters well seasoned

As suppertime waned, the old cook came on court

sayin' "Andre, there's no more to feed ya."

At 7 p.m., with his stomach growlin'

Andre said "then I'll just have to eat ya."

Coach Miles signaled in he was puttin' Andre in

And the wood in the floor was in peril

But with the game tight, after foulin' left and right

Came the wreck of the Andre Almeida

Does anyone know where the leftovers go

When Andre raids the fridge after hours?

The experts all say they'd have let Andre play

If he'd shed 50 more pounds behind him.

Good work, Norm! Crowd-sourced Wreck of the Andre Almeida lyrics! It really is a terrifying tale when you put it all together like that.

Does anyone here know Gordon Lightfoot personally who could get him to record it?

So we riled up the Gov. showing Andre no love

With our juvenile trys at lame humor.

I still like the big guy, let's buy him a moon pie.

Hope his knee ache is only a rumor.

A side note The first time I heard this song was when Lightfoot said it was a new one he had just written during a live performance at Pershing arena in Lincoln.

He just rewrote a line from the song two years ago, so he's probably not in the mood to do any more tinkering with a classic....:)

I could see your point more if he gained the weight while here.   He was overweight before he ever got here which is it was a questionable (at best) offer to begin with

Really, really happy for the big fella.  Going out in style.

He should be player of the game.  Without his effort tonight we don't win.

Almeida played his best game in a long time tonight, but Talley was the player of the game.  No doubt about that.  I would give my 2nd place vote to Ubel too as his two buckets down the stretch were absolutely huge.  Obviously Andre played a big role on each of those buckets, as well.
