Not necessarily.  They have been friends for a long time and sometimes it's easier to hire people you know as opposed to the best coaches out there.

Overall coaching record of 205 - 201 (.505%)  = Average Coach

Personally, I thought his end of game management was lacking but all in all a good coach of the fundamentals, X's & O's, and inspiring (threatening at times?) athletes to play with great effort. In today's game though recruiting is an indispensable skill needed to be a head coach at a high level. His inability to bring in players that were equal in ability to most conference opponents was his downfall. You can excel in one part of your job but still have weaknesses in other areas.

Hoiberg got fired from his last coaching job. There will be a honeymoon but if he isn't successful here with the resources given, he will be fired again. When your job is on the line, you don't bring in incompetent people because they are your friends. Our current head coach has acknowledged that defense is not a particular strength. Doc is here to teach defense. No matter what other weaknesses he had as a head coach, Hoiberg hired him because he thought Doc excels at that aspect of coaching. Liking your  co-workers is a is definitely a benefit, but you don't stay a D-1 head coach if you base your hires off of people you already know and like.

@Norm Peterson I believe what @kldm64 was saying there was that Doc was handed a very good team at UTEP by Billy Gillespie.  Which, I believe he was.

That's not the way I read it, but if that's what he meant, it would certainly be more accurate because Doc inherited an absolute dumpster fire when he took over here.

If he isn't successful - given that we still have a newish arena and facilities, an apparent upswing in in-state talent, a full share of Big Ten money, and that he is the highest profile coach we've ever had and the only reason we had a shot at getting him was because of family connections - if he isn't successful, it would probably be time for everyone to make peace with the fact that we'll probably never be any good.

I'm betting on success, though. Two hundred and seventy other schools have won an NCAA tournament game (or some number around that), so it really can't be that difficult, especially if you have a reasonable level of competence.

I'm not disagreeing with anything stated above, but I am saying that this doesn't work, probably nothing will.

Yes, I meant at UTEP.  Sorry I might not have been clear on that.  I totally understand he was not handed a great team at NU.  UTEP was his only school he had a decent record at but that was mainly due to the situation he inherited and he was only head coach for 2 years.

OK, I misunderstood you. I figured you were too aware to think Doc took over a good situation here.

No worries.  My point was that I was excited about Doc coming to NU based on what he did at UTEP but looking back, realized his record there might have had more to do with the talented team he was handed.  Over time at NU, it was clear he was not the coach that was going to excite the NU fan base or get NU basketball to where we would all like it to be.

How else would you judge him since he has been a head coach at 3 different schools?  Hard to say whether he is a good or bad assistant coach as not sure what you measure that on?

Boiling Doc down to a winning percentage seems like a disservice given how well known he is. It's common knowledge that he's an excellent defensive coach and a below average recruiter which can be backed up by his KenPom numbers and the fact that none of the guys he recruited (at least at Nebraska) sniffed the NBA.

Doc's strengths of defense, experience, and ability to take some of the microscope off of Hoiberg makes him a pretty complementary coach to the staff that otherwise seems that it should be good on the offensive side and in recruiting.

Doc himself said he is a good defensive coach and a mediocre offensive coach. Seems to me Hoiberg coaches offense, Sadler coaches D, and Gates and (especially) Abdelmassih focus on recruiting.

Doc also said he expected to have nothing to do with recruiting.

So that leaves Lutz.  What does he do?

Heres how I understand the coaches' responsibilities so far:

- Fred Hoiberg: Head Coach and Offense

- Bobby Lutz: Offensive Assistant

- Armon Gates: Player relations, in state recruiter, and works with PGs

- Doc Sadler: Defensive Coordinator

- Matt A: Transfer recruiter and player relations

He reportedly watches a lot of game tape and cuts that up for Hoiberg in addition to some of the DOBO stuff that needed to be done before Luca got here.

Is he involved with practice or any development training?

Hasn't there been concern about Samari Curtis's shot? Just how bad is it? I didn't catch any of the Italy streamed games.

It's accurate but ugly. Very ugly. Coyote ugly. It looks like a chest pass. But it goes in at a pretty high clip and, if he has plenty of space, apparently he can get it off as well.

Well, since Matt A is an ace recruiter, you have to have him named as an assistant coach so he can get out on the road. But, since he's not really a hoops guy, you bring in a guy like Lutz to do the coaching that the recruiting assistant would be doing if he was more of a coach and less of a recruiter. It's weird but I think that's what the rules require. You can have a non-coach doing coaching, but you can't have a non-coach doing recruiting on the road.

Please don't change that shot

Thanks,

The Nick Fuller Foundation for guys who had their shots broken in college

I haven’t seen him shoot, but dammit if I didn’t laugh at this description!
