Sorry turned it on a little late - missed the first few minutes - here's what he has to say so far: Tough to play so many games, feels like you are always game-planning But good to have Saturday off so we could adjust We want to score more than a point a possession on average Were struggling with running motion offense But we decided to stick with it & work through problems Went with a big lineup late in the game against Georgia and it made the zone work better Bring forwards way up, looks almost like a 2-2-1 Used it very little vs UMass & UAB, but it worked very well vs Georgia 9-man rotation, maybe 10 with Hawkins, but 5-6 are new to the team? All trying to figure out their roles Not a clearly defined team yet We have a lot of guys who want the ball, but we need some quarterbacks who will deliver the ball & find some people to "block" for the others Will take time to get that figured out Gallegos injury? Sprained knee Wasn't 100% Made some critical shots vs Georgia in first half 7-for-12 on 3s in tourney We needed his outside shooting Teams will try to zone us as we attack the rim, so need his outside shooting What did you learn at the tourney? We got a lot out of it Temple got better every game, thought UAB would win that game UMass won it all, our side of bracket was really tough We got better Hoping we'd go 2-1, but could have been worse We can live with 1-2, but need good things to happen next few weeks This post has been promoted to an article3 points

Examining the remaining non-conference schedule

7 games. I think we will be favored in 5, pretty large underdogs @ Creighton & @ Cincinnati. It would be a hoot to go 6-1 and enter conference play at 11-3. Is that possible? Games: Vs. Northern Illinois- SHOULD win comfortably Vs. Miam- going to be a tough test, hope we play well and get a W @ Creighton- Best team on our non-conference schedule Vs. Arkansas State- SHOULD win comfortably Vs. The Citadel- SHOULD win comfortably @ Cincinnati- Great test for B1G play. Going to have to play a lot better than we did this weekend to steal one! Thoughts?2 points -

1st segment: With long season, you feel like you spend all season game planning and not getting better. Greg asks if they ran more motion against Georgia: We need to score more than 1 pt/possession on average. We were doing better in sets than in motion in games/practices/etc. So we went with more sets but ... That made us more of a collection of individuals. So, yes, against Georgia we ran more motion. 4 returning starters but a bunch of new guys: Yeah, Terry Pettit is a friend and was talking with him about how in volleyball you have a libero, etc., who all have their roles. With all the new guys we're having to feel out roles. Ray Gallegos is hurt. Knee ligament? Temple got better with every game at the tournament We thought we would leave the tournament 5-1 at best, 4-2 at worst. Well, we came out with worst. Tacos on special at Carlos O'Kelly's tonight. Went from (joking) worst in the country in assists to 3rd worst. We play an iso style so not a lot of assists but we do have to get better. Petteway was a monster during the tournament and played well during the tournament. 28 pts in 29 minutes. Defense, we're not doing a good job of protecting the rim. Have to get better at defense. Thinks the way they're calling charging now is wrong. Taking away the charge is bad for basketball. "I don't think the commissioner is listening to me."2 points -
I see a slight improvement in your spelling and grammar over previous posts. Not really a success, but not a failure either.1 point

To give you a more serious answer. Was it a failure to only get one win? Yes. I think it may be. We really should have gotten out of there 2-1. Was it a disappointment, or was it something to have been avoided? No. It was a valuable experience for the team. However, the part about second-guessing Miles' scheduling philosophy? Yeah...man, that's just wrong. If you want to watch a team rack up 30 point wins against horrible competition, may I suggest you start following the Iowa basketball team?1 point

Charleston Classic: Success or Failure?
HuskerActuary reacted to HB for a topic
Right, Ice Dragon. He has built programs from nothing in 4 colleges/universities prior to coming here. Yep, he just doesn't understand scheduling and makes decisions that aren't in the best interest of the program. I guess I'll go with the guy who has an 18 year track record in building programs over the second guessers on here. I'm sure there will be big fallout in a few years over going 1-2 in some tournament early into the second year. No doubt we'll be lamenting that fateful decision for years.1 point -
So now we know if Miles ever coaches in the Nba he'd be willing to tank1 point

Oh, alas!! Woe is us! I mean after all, signing a guy like Webster is a huge sign of defeat. And almost getting Agau is ... well ... as good as a mile. And we didn't even get Robinson signed after that visit here. And others haven't signed up that visited unofficially. And some haven't even made the trip! And only having one guy signed up for 2015 already--an absolute defeat. And only one Rivals 150 signee for 2014. Yeah, now that you mention it, let's fire that ne'er-do-well Tim Miles. Forget that we showed well against UMass. Forget that newbies like Webster and Smith and Petteway are progressing well. Yeah. This is bad!!! And disappointing too!!! And really . . . disgusting and . . . . Seriously?1 point

Sounds like more proof of the whole Miles tanks his first season or two to make himself look better later. I'm sorry but thats pretty selfish of a coach to ask a guy to redshirt and hold off his future career just because YOUR team might be a little better the next year. Building towards the future is what Miles is doing. Are there short gain loses, most definitely. Purposing tanking? Eye of the beholder I guess. Let's try a follow up question on perception. Guy joins a Husker Hoops message board and is a huge fan of Creighton. Does he pick a name just because that is what he's used to using or does he specifically pick a non-Bluejay name so he can come on here and stir up controversy?1 point -

THAT is a BRILLIANT way to criticize refs without getting in trouble yourself!!! It wasn't ME getting upset with the officials, but my PLAYERS probably were struggling because they were upset with the officiating. And then he should go on and say, y'know, when you're playing, it might seem like all the bad calls go against you. Like that charge on Deverell Biggs that they hadn't called all night long.1 point -
Went and ate dinner and watched the radio show. It was very entertaining. Coach is extremely entertaining and can work a crowd. For me the biggest shock of the night was the comment about wanting Ubel to redshirt last year...right away it had me thinking about how we'd look as a team this year! Outside of coach's humor, the funniest part of the night was that one of the raffle ticket winners was none other than Taylor Martinez. He was there enjoying himself some dinner and ended up winning some b-ball tickets which he kindly gave away.1 point

Starters & Mins

ACC-Big 10 Challenge? Last year at Wake? That was fun, my teams are 2-0 in Winston Salem - ND St beat Winston Salem State Looking forward to playing Miami, know their coaches well Should be fun Then heading into showdown with Creighton Miami? They have a lot of athletes Plenty of seniors last year, really good There will be a period of adjustment for new coach New players understand what it requires to win at a high level They've been part of blowing out Duke at Duke, they won't be afraid of coming in here Delaney wants all of us Big Ten teams to beat these ACC teams Adjusting to trailing? wondered what would happen We fought back well vs UMass, had a couple of chances late to tie or get to within 1, fought back well, just didn't get over top vs UAB we got smacked down the stretch and we didn't respond Happy that we responded well vs Georgia when they made a run at us That's it Interesting that he said he asked Ubel to redshirt last year, hadn't heard that one before Also nice to see them taking a foreign trip this summer, that will greatly benefit such a young team entering its second year of playing together1 point

Coach Miles found his way to the correct Carlos O'Kelly's this week Don't play again till saturday? We need to practice You find a lot of deficiencies when you play 3 times in four days Need better defensive rebounding Need better defense vs screen and roll Need to share ball better on offense, get better quality shots Good week to get a lot of that work done One more day of classes, then time off so that will help us We had to have 3 study halls in Charleston to help the guys keep up with classes Practice in morning Wed & Thur, we'll provide a meal for the guys who are staying on Thanksgiving Academic support? Other places i've been very little or no help At NU it's the full service of academic support It's like when you go to a great resort when traveling, everything is taken care off from the smallest item to the largest That's how our academic, nutrition, strength support people work Hopefully the coaching can match it Great support from administration all the way through fans I have a good track record with academics, CSU had one of the 10 worst APRs when our staff arrived, moved us into the top 15% I want players who want to work at academics Those kinds of kids work well in groups, which we need in basketball How was Charleston as a trip? Charming city, very unique with shopping, dining, entertainment Fort Sumter is there, plenty of historical landmarks Had dinner on Yorktown, went through museum, very interesting, showed how Yorktown fought off Japanese air fighters in WWII Almost tough for kids to fathom Didn't get to do enough probably, but the hospitality is great ESPN runs a first class event Had 150-200 NU fans there, made a lot of noise My uncle came from Virginia, he was there for UAB, almost didn't invite him back, but he was there for Georgia win so he's off the hook Trips upcoming? Going to Europe or Australia in off season, not sure yet Love playing in these tournaments, at Hawaii next year This week there are tourneys in Orlando, Maui, etc, they're all really great1 point

10 assists Sunday? It was better Missed some layups or would've had a few more We're getting better at passing the ball in motion offense I like having an isolation offense We take the ball to the rim hard so not surprised that we're a low assist team As long as we are also a low turnover team, I'm OK with low assists numbers Just need to take good shots 1.5 to 1 in assists to turnovers is about average Petteway? Really on the attack Could have been even better numbers if he stayed out of foul trouble 29 min with 28 points vs UMass, would rather have had him out there 34-35 min Defense? We will have trouble protecting the rim We're fouling too much, out of position Need to get into spots better Important that we rethink how we're taking charges Think we took 2 charges the entire weekend I don't like that rule change Understand keeping hands off the guards By taking away charges, they're now are allowing a guard to initiate the contact and draw fouls - bad for basketball I don't think they're listening to me I did e-mail director of officiating, need to change foul numbers, 6 for DQ, more fouls to reach bonus, etc, but he said players will adjust Different crews, different results? It's hard for the refs too They're trying, they'll make mistakes, they're human Unfortunately we made far more mistakes than the refs1 point -
Win the 3 gimmees to start. Don't need any slip ups against those teams this year. Try and use our home-court advantage to beat Miami. I think we can do it. Creighton I see no way we win in Omaha. We don't match up well with McDermott. We'll probably have 2-3 guys foul out trying to guard him. However, I do think our ability to drive will create problems for them. If we turn into a jumpshooting team that game, we could get blown out. If we attack the rim, I really think we can hang in there if we're hitting free throws. Creighton is not the most athletic team in the world and from what I've seen they still can't defend guards who can drive. Cincinnati, hopefully we catch them still sleeping coming off Christmas three days earlier. Haven't seen them play this year, but I'm guessing they are still very athletic will not a lot of skill. Will probably be similiar to UMass/UAB except in a hostile environment. Kilpatrick and Petteway might combined for over 50 shots.1 point

Examining the remaining non-conference schedule
Noah121 reacted to TheKamdyMan for a topic
your math is wrong you say 7 but theres only six which you go into detail on each. With 6 games left in the non-conference they'd have to go 6-0 to get to 11-2, 10-3 is 5-1.1 point -

Over the next three years is this going to become a Nick Krenk kind of thing? Except we all yell "don't shoot" when Terran gets the ball. That could get kind of old really fast.1 point -

Overall...the UAB game was the thorn in the side to me for this tournament. Our defense is that game was just flat out bad and disappointing. I thought our team played better defense yesterday. Not great yet, but better. Offensively I thought we had some good flow yesterday and guys looking for each other more which was refreshing. The UMASS game had no flow, but that's a very good UMASS team. Its just too bad we didn't find a way to get that game. Had we won that game I think we go 2-1 at worst. Or its too bad we weren't on the other side of the bracket. I think we also go 2-1 if we were. I'm guessing this tourney was great for Miles and staff to really evaluate some things. I saw a LOT of very promising things and a LOT of things we need to work on. We are young.....so as so many of us have said, we will look pretty damn good at times and pretty damn bad at times. The more this team learns to play together the better we will be. I still really believe this team will do pretty well this year. I know the B10 is going to be tough, but I think we will continue to only get better. We still have to remember we have a lot of new pieces this year. What is so promising (for me at least) is that we have way more offensive weapons. We don't tend to go on long droughts like we used too. I think defensive things are very correctable. I would love to see us continue to switch ball screens out top the way we did yesterday. Use our length to give teams fits. We also need to get better at defending ball screen pick and rolls. We don't rotate very well right now. Again, very correctable. I'm happy NU has a week off this week to work on some things. I know they may not have practice on Thursday and possibly Friday, but this gives plenty of time for our guys to rest their legs, get Gallegos fresh, let Smith rest those knees, and hopefully get better heading into next Saturday's game vs Northern Illinois. Then we will have to play very well to beat Miami. I know Miami not great right now, but they will still be a very good test for this young team.1 point -
Hey,this is no time for perspective! Instead, the sky is falling, even though another way to look at it is a 6 point loss at a neutral site to a veteran, talented team, with a bunch of inexperienced youngsters is actually sign of progress. But no, it's better to not give UMass credit, and announce that the coaching sucked, a terrible decision was made to not re-recruit some dude named Fahro, and that we really struck out by not getting all those great players that were available in April last year.1 point
