  1. Go over to the bluejay underground place. DoubleJay will be quick to remind you that number is an anomaly. We're paying off Doc's (slingblade - they still use that over there...huh) salary and Miles' (Revenge of the Nerds - clever) CSU buyout. Well be back to our "normal" budget in a year or two and be back at the bottom of the pack...which is our rightful place in the world order. So, no threat to knock Creighton of their lofty perch. Whew! Crisis averted! Speaking of nicknames, I thought his nickname of Double Douche was particularly fitting. So, let's just pretend for a moment that his assertion is true (which it's not, and here's why). Tim Miles' buyout was in FY 2011-2012, and these numbers reflect last year's expenses, so that's not even a part of the equation. Doc's buyout was reduced by about 1/5th (as far as I can tell) by his employment with KU - it will be reduced by even more now that he's at ISU. But lets just ignore both of these facts and pretend that what he says isn't complete nonsense. Doc's buyout (without consideration for the reduction due to his continued employment elsewhere) is $800,000 annually. Miles' buyout from CSU was $350,000. Assuming we can directly deduct these amounts from the AD budget - and if IN FACT they are a part of the AD's basketball expenses, that's $1.15 million off the top there to give us our "true amount". Because, you know, Nebraska is the only basketball program currently or in the history of mankind that has ever had to pay a buyout on their coaches contracts, and that every one else's expenses on that list are a true indicator of investing in excellence, while Nebraska is only interested in investing in futility, obviously. But I digress. So...where would we stand if we weren't the only school in the country to ever have had to eat a contract? Well, let's see. $8.36 million minus $1.15 million. Well, let me take my shoes off here ...carry the one, divide by three... Looks like we've got a number of $7.21 million. Good enough for 22nd place. And still third in the B1G. And still ahead of teams like UCLA, Baylor, North Carolina, and STILL about $3 million ahead of Creighton. But the thing is, as I pointed out above that's such a ridiculous fallacy I can't even begin to.... Yeah Norm, Double Douche sounds about right.

Actually it's the opposite. Unless working for a university-sponsored outlet, media members are taught to be a little tougher on the home/alum team, just to ensure there's no appearance of homerism/favoritism. How that manifests itself is a little different in each person, but there's a concerted effort to separate the media person from any semblance of being a fan, especially in print media. Portray an aura of objectivity in other words.

  7. I know we shouldn't take the time to do this but what clever name could we come up for McDermott? I say Herman you know from the Munsters. Okay we can now move this part to the other thread. Thanks Norm.

  10. Double Digit Minutes players under Tim Miles in Division I ** NEBRASKA ** 2013 - 8 [Record 15-18] (Mike Peltz only played 14 games) ** COLORADO ST ** 2012 - 8 [Record 20-12] 2011 - 8 [Record 19-13] 2010 - 10 [Record 16-16] (One player with only 20 games) 2009 - 12 [Record 9-22] (Only one player played all 31 games - Three players with less than 20 games) 2008 - 9 [Record 7-25] ** NORTH DAKOTA STATE ** 2007 - 9 [Record 20-8 ] (Two players with 20 or less games) 2006 - 7 [Record 16-12] (One players averaged 9 min/game) 2005 - **** ONLY PLAYED 8 DIV I GAMES - NDSU MAKING TRANSITION TO DIV I **** Barring injury the most players you should see playing double digits this year is 9. It's quite likely that this number will be 8 with a couple of guys near double digits. Max = 12 Min = 7 Mode = 8 Avg = 8.875 On a semi-related note, I think Deverell would have averaged a minimum of 25 minutes per game last year and really set himself up for major minutes this year. We would then have another scholarship for 2014.

From what I've seen, most Husker fans can't deal with objective facts. Husker fans, Creighton fans, High School fans, etc....Too many people want sunshine pumpers writing for the paper. Whats funny is that a lot of NU fans think that the OWH is more "pro-Creighton" for example and the Creighton fans think that the paper bashes Creighton all the time. I think both fan bases are guilty or "reading between the lines" too often.

What if the actual truth is there are flaws in the programs? I can tell you first hand this is the furthest thing from the truth.

  15. That's an amazing number - I knew it was up but had no idea it was by that much. It would've been easy for Coach Osborne to go through the motions as an AD, focus on football and just let the next guy deal with hoops, but he has put basketball on the right trajectory as far as a commitment from administration. Not only a new practice facility, but an expanded budget to go with it. I remember Barry Collier asking for a practice facility right after he was hired - hard to believe it took so long. And just think about what Coach Iba could have done with a dedicated practice facility - he could've had as many illegal practices as he wanted with no fear of getting caught.

  16. Thanks Norm for the thread title and also for not using the word 'memory'. I have to admit that I had put some numbers together a couple of months ago after it was apparent that our roster was set for the upcoming year. After reading the reports from the scrimmage, I've tweaked the numbers slightly, but also included points per game. Can't wait for the season to start and to see the guys in person. NAME MINUTES POINTS Biggs 16 6 Fuller 14 5 Gallegos 24 9 Hawkins 8 3 Parker 4 1 Petteway 22 8 Pitchford 24 10 Rivers 18 5 Shields 24 10 Smith 18 6 Vucetic 4 1 Webster 24 8 Totals 200 72

As much as I enjoy a couple of their columnists, I truly believe the paper is moving further and further away from Husker sports. Their objective is to create controversy and sell papers. They would rather find flaws in the programs than to provide objective facts. But that is just my very humble opinion.

  18. Sergej Vucetic - 0 Walter Pitchford - 25 Leslee Smith - 20 Shavon Shields - 30 David Rivers - 10 Nick Fuller - 15 Terran Petteway - 30 Nathan Hawkins - 0 Tai Webster - 30 Ray Gallegos - 30 Deverell "D Nasty" Biggs - 10 Benny Parker - 0 Going by 5s is easier to add I think we'll be down to 9 players getting regular minutes by conference play, so I guess that's where I'm at

  20. 10/2/13 Rosenthal Chat Shavon - I haven't seen him in action, in person, yet, but yes, Shavon was "all good" on Saturday, according to Tim Miles. Disaster averted. Halloween Media Day - Oh, and speaking of Shavon Shields, he'll accompany Tim Miles and senior guard Ray Gallegos to Big Ten Media Day on Oct. 31 in Chicago. No word on what costumes they'll be wearing. Rivers - David had a foot issue that had just crept on him the week of the scrimmage. We're supposed to talk with Tim tomorrow so we'll get an update on his status. My starting five is Tai Webster, Ray Gallegos, Shavon Shields, Terran Petteway and Walter Pitchford. On the scrimmage - Well, to be honest, I didn't take away very much (or tried not to), partly because it was clearly a loose, street-ball, have-fun-for-the fans display, and also because it came after the team practiced for about 2 hours. So not the freshest of legs. But I liked Tai Webster's court vision. I saw more athleticism all around. Didn't see much for three-point shooting, but wasn't reading much into that based on the above reasons. impressed with Nate Hawkins. Recruiting - Elbert Robinson remains on the board. Most recently visited Ohio State. I'd say that's Nebraska's No. 1 big man target. Could be some unofficial visitors this weekend. I'll blog or tweet when I know for sure. Defense - Yes, Miles very much likes this team, and you're absolutely correct about the length. You'll see Nebraska do some things on defense you didn't see last season. However, lack of size inside is still a concern, particularly on defense. But rebounding should be much improved.

My suggestion for next OWH poll: The city of Omaha has pretensions of being a major metropolitan center in the Midwest. How does it rate when compared with other US cities? a. As good as most b. Poorly c. Don't care.

  23. Like what he says about Coach Miles being big on skill development. The guys are chomping at the bit to get into group practices because he's been really drilling them on individual and small group development. Awesome.

  26. Great post. Those two are awful. They are basically both robots that know nothing about basketball. Sharp is a Bo Pelini fanboy and Benning has the charisma of a slab of concrete. Sharp also thinks telling the same stories about how he almost flunked out of Nebraska is high comedy. I missed this interview because I gave up on that show over a year ago. Especially when compared to their predecessors' show, the slow is a snooze fest.

  27. Disagree completely -- he's awful. Easily the worst of ALL of the sportstalk people in Omaha (and that's saying something!) Unfortunately he's got the anti-skill set: not only is he clueless, but he's also remarkably unentertaining.
