49r Posted October 8, 2014 Report Posted October 8, 2014 How come you used the photo for the portion about teams on the rise, when you could have used the other from the teams on the decline portion? I just posted someone else's tweet. That picture of coach mickey d looks like he's just about to make sweet, sweet love. It creeps me out. A lot. HuskerActuary 1 Quote
Norm Peterson Posted October 8, 2014 Report Posted October 8, 2014 Maybe you're just joking about the picture, but do you have a son and, if so, have you ever had a proud poppa moment like what Coach McD is having in that picture? I can sorta relate and it doesn't creep me out at all. No, the part that creeps me out is in the background where it looks like someone sliced diagonally through Grant Gibbs's head down to about his cheek. He looks positively deformed. Yeeek. Quote

Come on, Norm, you know me well enough to know that of course I'm joking. A good rule of thumb when it comes to stuff I post is if you aren't sure if serious, then always assume it's a joke. And even if you're pretty sure it's serious, it's still probably just a joke that wasn't very good. AuroranHusker and hhcmatt 2 Quote

Agreed. This is how you have a better squad and then manage to finish 5th-8th in the conference Quote
Nebrasketballer Posted October 8, 2014 Report Posted October 8, 2014 Nice to see these parts of the article: PROGRAMS ON THE RISE: Nebraska: For the first time since 1998, the Cornhuskers danced last season. They’ll look to continue the basketball program’s resurgence in 2014-2015. In a conference where several tournament teams lost key contributors, Tim Miles brings back all-Big Ten first team members Terran Petteway and Shavon Shields. Early reports are positive for freshman floor general Tarin Smith, and Tai Webster spent his summer playing in the FIBA Basketball World Cup with New Zealand. PROGRAMS ON THE DECLINE: Creighton: It was a great debut for Creighton as a member of the Big East, winner of 14 conference games. A sophomore slump will likely be in store for Greg McDermott’s club after graduating four starters, most notably national player of the year Doug McDermott and his 3,150 career points. Austin Chatman leads the cast of returners, five of whom logged 10 or more minutes per game in the 2013-2014 season. Norm Peterson 1 Quote

Agreed. This is how you have a better squad and then manage to finish 5th-8th in the conference Conference standings and RPI don't necessarily correspond. And because of our higher SOS, we're very likely to have a higher RPI than teams that might have a better conference record but lower SOS. We were faced with that same scenario last year, in fact. But I think we're more equipped to deal with a tougher schedule this year and I think it could actually work out very well for us in the sense that we'll have a good record and a very high SOS, which could potentially earn us a strong seed in the NCAA tourney. That's what I'm hoping for, anyway. Quote

Norm Peterson Posted October 8, 2014 Report Posted October 8, 2014 I could see Illinois being better. Their young guards were really good last year and Groce recruits well. They could be a tough out for anyone including us. Quote

jimmykc Posted October 9, 2014 Report Posted October 9, 2014 I have no personal animosity against Coach McD. In fact he seems like a very decent guy who gets along well with Coach Timmy. However, now that his son has graduated, I would be very nervous if I were a Bluejay fan to for the next few years. Then we'll see if he is indeed a "big time" coach or whether he seems overmatched like his Iowa State days or just an excellent midmajor coach like his Northern Iowa days. I sort of hope he ends up as successful as Coach Dana who did better at Creighton than any of his previous gigs. Quote
lanigan123 Posted October 9, 2014 Report Posted October 9, 2014 Illinois is gonna be tough. Craydone... The two transfers are good. It sounds like Justin Patton needs a lot of classroom work to become eligible. If they don't get him in, they will be in trouble. Quote
Navin R. Johnson Posted October 13, 2014 Report Posted October 13, 2014 Coach McDermott is a very good guy and I think a very good coach. He did struggle at Iowa State but he also had some bad luck with injuries (especially to his big guys) and he did have a couple good players transfer out. One went on to be the player of the year in the Big East so I don't think he was all that far from getting it done there. (and no I'm not a Jaysker or a Creighton fan, but I do know and like Coach McDermott) Quote

Doc Sadler was just about the only coach he could win against. Also that Big East player of the year transferred from Iowa St because of Mcdermott's treatment towards him. His mismanagement of the ISU roster was one of his major downfalls. Silverbacked1 and krazzykirk 1 1 Quote

His mismanagement of the ISU roster was one of his major downfalls. Do you really think it was player mismanagement or recruiting? Not so much recruiting high level talent but recruiting the right talent. Notice how much credence Tim Miles places on individual recruit character and fit with the team. I believe that is a big part of his formula for success. Quote

atskooc Posted October 23, 2014 Report Posted October 23, 2014 How's this for hype? I don't think I've seen this posted (at least not in this thread). http://www.btpowerhouse.com/2014/10/12/6961989/5-bold-predictions-for-nebraska-basketball-2014-15 #4 – Nebraska will win the Big Ten regular-season championship The Huskers have a slightly more difficult schedule than its top challenger for the conference title, Wisconsin. Both play Michigan St. only once (both games at home), Ohio St. once (both on road), and Michigan once (both on road). Nebraska has an 11-day stretch in mid-February where road games to Purdue, Maryland and Ohio St. are sandwiched around a home game with Iowa. The Badgers, however, close out the conference regular season with hosting Michigan St before trips to Minnesota and Ohio State. The Cornhuskers win their first regular-season conference title since sharing the Big Seven title in 1950 with Kansas and Kansas St. #5 – Nebraska will advance to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament By far the Boldest of these 5 predictions, but certainly attainable. The Huskers have all the pieces needed with the addition of Abraham, which gives the Huskers a more balanced lineup. The defense is solid, and Miles gives them direction in coaching. And the Huskers are even more motivated by the way last season ended (71-67 loss to Ohio St in first round of the Big Ten Tournament along with the loss to Baylor). It looks to be a banner year in Lincoln. Quote
hhcmatt Posted October 23, 2014 Report Posted October 23, 2014 SI has us at 7th. http://www.si.com/college-basketball/2014/10/22/conference-preview-big-ten-wisconsin-michigan-ohio-state I know it's not ideal, but with our schedule I'd take 9-9 as a successful season as I think we're dancing with it. uneblinstu Posted October 23, 2014 Report Posted October 23, 2014 Depends on what they did in the non-con. It probably means NU didn't finish strong and I'd fear we'd be facing something similar to what Iowa did last year, which I don't think would sit well with many. Quote
