Our offense is going to go as Rey goes a lot I feel like. He is a guy that has enough athletic ability etc, to get shots off. We need guys like he and Rivers to make some shots desperately.

It doesn't have to be Ray. As long as Talley and Ubel do what they do, they need one of Ray, Andre, Rivers, Parker or Shields (when he gets healthy) to show up. They need three guys a night to show up to be competitive. Doesn't need to be the same guy every night. If they get two guys like they did last night, they'll be very competitive most nights.

Well, to be fair, Miles also has only done it once . . . lol

Here is another pretty eye-opening first for Coach Miles (from huskers.com):

*-Nebraska Coach Tim Miles becomes the first Nebraska Head Coach to win his first road game at Nebraska since Paul Schlisser in 1919-20, a 47-9 winner over Hastings College on Jan. 13, 2010. Prior to Miles' win, the previous 14 Nebraska basketball head coaches had lost their first road game as Husker head coach.

Tony, I'm at work and don't have my media guide in front of me.

Can you, or someone else, check this:

When was the last time a Husker mens basketball coach won his first ever road game? True road game, I'm talking, no neutral sites.

I was wondering how long it took Doc, Barry and Danny to win their first road games (how many attempts) and who was the last coach to do what Miles did last night.

Anyone know?

Doc won his third true road game when they beat Miami. I think that's considered a true road game, at least. If not, he beat Mizzou four roadies later.

Collier similarly won his third road game when they beat Miami in what might also be considered a neutral site game and then had to wait five more roadies before beating KState.

Nee also won his third road game when he beat Southern Illinois.

hm, I just noticed the typo in the paragraph I copied from huskers.com...I'm pretty sure we didn't play @ Hastings on 1-13-2010, I'm also pretty sure Paul Schlisser wasn't the coach for the 2009-2010 Huskers...I could be wrong, but I don't think I am.

I'm not sure. You guys will be Creighton's first road game this year. I hope the Jays do just as well.

Well, Talley had his off-night too. I think what we saw from last night is that we can play and be competitive with a lot of teams if we get scoring contributions from the big 4: the three seniors and Gallegos.

Parker may be good for half a dozen; Rivers 4 or 5. Peltz might get the odd free throw or the open jump shot but has shown he's not going to be someone we rely on for scoring.

In order to get to 75 points, pretty much each of the big 4 will have to have a decent to good game and one or two of them will have to catch fire. If we get, say, 15 bench points (which is optimistic) then the starters have to combine for 60 points in order for us to hit the 75 pt plateau.

I would say that in any case where Ray only scores 3 points, like in the Kent State game, our chances of winning get very slim. We're just flat going to have to rely on him this year for points. I don't think there's any way around it.

I am really hoping that Shavon is a scorer. He is going to be rusty, likely until close to the start of the Big Ten season, but we need scoring off of the bench...and it comes down to Shavon and David. Peltz is growing on me, but not as a scorer.

Well, everybody's going to have an off night, but Talley's the team's leading scorer. He, Ubel and Ray are all averaging double figures with AA a tick under. If they can hit those averages, they'll be competitive. But that's not my point. The point is they can't have nights where they only have two guys show up and we've had that twice now. One of the times they held the opponent to 48. So, unless they're going to do that every game, they need at least three guys to show up every night and not have the rest of the guys post a goose egg. Doesn't matter which three it will be.

If we can average 75 points, we'll probably get a top 4 seed in the big ten tourney. That's asking an awful lot. 75 points flips 10 games in Nebraska's favor last year. If they can get to 68, if flips eight. Heck, if they get to just 65 (which is what they're averaging so far this season), that's six games! Now, I realize the assumption doesn't work that way, but the point is, if they can get to 68 points, they'll find themselves in just about every game at homes and most on the road vs. teams not in the top 10. Scoring will likely go down in conference play, NU's ppg dropped nearly 10 points once conference play started last year. If they can avoid that drop off, NU will have a chance.

Give me 3 guys who are on every night, doesn't matter who they are, and I'll take my chances. All I'm saying is it doesn't have to be the same three every night as long as someone picks up the slack when another guy has an off night.

That is pretty obvious. It is also pretty obvious that our offense will largely hinge on how Rey goes. He is going to be the guy taking the most shots aside from the guys your mentioned as being the rocks. Thus my thought process on our offense going as Rey goes. Not that everyone didn't already know that, as it has basically worked that way so far to a large degree.

I wasn't around the board at 12:42 this afternoon when this happened, but here's my guess:

Creighton fan Tony thought Dave was talking to him about record books. That's funny.

:)

Brief board history, creightonite---

HHC Tony has been around this site a long time. His street cred is pretty good--sports journalist, gets into that RPI mumbo-jumbo, has an excellent basketball pedigree, growing up in the Class D basketball capital of Nebraska and an all-around good guy.

There's no way you could have known there was an original Tony when you joined this board. I would have never thought to look under HHC(insert name) either.

To eliminate any confusion you might have from this point forward, let me suggest changing your name. Last I looked, bluejay loser was available. ;)

Yeah, I definitely agree with you, uneblinstu, that we can't have nights where only 2 of our big 4 show up. In fact, I would still suggest that it'll be difficult to be successful if one of the big 4 does not show up. And that's because there's no one else on the roster who's shown any ability to step up and score in their place unless one of those 4 compensates by having a really big night. Right now, we're averaging about 65 points per game. Parker is reliably scoring 6 and Rivers about 5. And that's it outside of the big 4. So, if everyone hits their averages and Ray takes a night off, we go from 65 down to 52.

I guess my point was that we have so few scorers that we basically can ill afford to have any of them take a night off. Unless we're facing a really bad team, and our schedule is running out of those.
