First of all, I am firmly in the camp of disliking the Creighton Blue Jays (Yes, spelled "Bluejays" wrong intentionally).

From 1999-2000, when Terrell Taylor was a hot dog and talking trash more than any opposing player I had seen (and this was backed by former players I was friends with at this time - I was in college). Add in Rodney Buford and you had quite the special duo come through that program, along with guys who couldn't even read (literally).

From 2003-2004, when we ended their season, on their home floor, in the NIT, and we were told "Well, that game doesn't matter. Only the regular season matters. NIT is for losers."

From 2005, when something like 12 of 16 schools on our schedule would work with us (HHC) in doing interviews, sending out media guides, etc. The Creighton SID (Rob something) was completely rude to me, lectured me on my grammar (which is pretty spot on the majority of the time) and informed me they wouldn't be doing anything or sending out a guide. This is back before media guides were standard on-line and 10 of 12 Big 12 schools sent them without a problem, as well as allowing access. Little dick syndrome even back then.

From DBAG Perrault, the biggest fraud of a media personality in the country, and a career bush league radio guy with no future (BTW, Mike Welch, you DO have a future. I need to reach out to you soon).

From the last 15 years, when there's NO DOUBT they have had more basketball success. Nobody here is arguing that. But they seemed to revel in calling us "Little brother" (which makes zero sense), have fans like LincolnJay who would end every post with "BE LOUD!!! BE PROUD!!!" and multitudes of others who would do ANYTHING to belittle Nebraska, a program with an all-time winning record head to head and a program who saw basketball as its (for the majority of that time) 5th best athletic program.

You see, basketball is Creighton's marquee sport. Pretty much always has been.

Basketball has NEVER been Nebraska's marquee sport. And never close. Is some of that incompetence from AD's, coaches, players, etc? Of course. But a lot is that there was NEVER an emphasis placed on basketball in a serious manner until recently.

Flash forward to tonight. I head over to the Creighton site for the second time this year (First since back before and after we played them) and I see constant mocking of Nebraska, how Baylor is a lock, they don't even CONSIDER US a possible opponent. Are you joking? A 3.5 point underdog? The 4th ranked Big 10 team versus the 7th ranked Big 12 team? Two conferences that are VERY comparable RPI wise?

There's two possibilities for this reaction - both very much possible (and probable).

1. They're clueless basketball fans and seriously think we couldn't defeat a Baylor team no better than Ohio State, who we split with in the regular season and no logical person would say we didn't "have defeated" last Friday. They don't understand a team +3.5 has a better than 2:1 chance of winning, meaning odds are pretty good, and they don't understand we've already defeated teams better, such as the aforementioned Ohio State, Wisconsin and Michigan State (on the road).

2. They're scared shitless. They know that their All-American player, Dougie M, is gone, and that Daddy wasn't ever able to cut it at BCS level leagues in the past and will never be able to recruit that caliber of athlete again. Luckily for Daddy, the Big East is only 25% better than the Valley in its peak years, so he has a fighting chance of competing in the middle of that league and avoiding the "pathetic" NIT in half of the years.

They know that their 26 year old point guard will soon have to get a real job, unless he gets into UFC Fighting, which I would advise or even better, cock fighting (hey, it fits, doesn't it?).

They also know this "team of a lifetime" and "dream season" couldn't even finish 1st place in a watered down, slightly above mid major status league during the regular season, and choked away a conference championship in the tournament against a team that (GASP!!!) has the same seed as "little brother" Nebraska in the NCAA's (11 seed - thanks to Creighton's incompetence in getting them that high).

What's even funnier is that they wouldn't even have won the Valley this year, clearly a non Top 8 league, and they've only gone one round further than Nebraska in the NCAA.

So why are they scared?

Well, with all of the above in mind, they see that right down the road, for the first time in program history, FINALLY Nebraska is dedicated to fielding a basketball team.

No more forcing a coach out after the school's first NCAA appearance in 1986.

No more forcing a coach out in the 90's who put the program to a new level.

No more old facilities. No more stupid administrative mishaps.

They see "little brother" finally putting its money where the fans' mouths have been.

In Creighton's defense, a lot of us HAVE been claiming things are getting better, with little evidence (other than hope) to back that for years.

However, nowadays, it would take a mental midget to not clearly SEE the differences in:

1. A top 5 practice facility in America.

2. A top 5 basketball arena in America.

3. A top level basketball coach that has won over almost every heart he's crossed that has a beat.

4. A first team All Big 10 performer with two years left; a former huge recruit to Florida who is going to become a second team All Big 10 performer by his senior season in two years; a sophomore All-Honorable Mention B1G as a sophomore; a big time point guard prospect who is a freshman; and a Top 25 caliber recruiting class brewing for 2015.

5. A much better basketball conference (and ten times the network than the conference formerly called the Big East).

6. A completely sold out season ticket fan base.

7. Fans who get into the game (unlike the old days).

8. National attention (gobs of it).

And last but not least:

9. A program that SHOULD be TWO YEARS AWAY from the NCAA Tournament. Yet here we are, in year two.

I don't blame them for being scared shitless. Times are changing. They always will.

What's funny though is that looking back, I see we were going to lose to MSU. Then at Indiana. Then to WISC. And miss the tourney. I'm reminded that we were never going to make the NIT and if we do, its a loser tournament.

And now "little brother" is TWO YEARS ahead of schedule, with more momentum than Rodney Buford had going through security with his marijuana inside his tin foil at the airport, and you know what, Creighton can't stand this.

This is THEIR year. Their "Final 4 run" (which is still posted on their site even today and talked about like its normal - you should read it, its quite adorable).

And here we are, one win away from playing them, and they can't STAND to think of it. "Little Brother" taking the headlines and becoming even with them in their DREAM SEASON. TWO YEARS before we are supposed to do anything.

They can't stand getting beat by "little brother', let alone being in the same tournament and same bracket. UNL is a bunch of peasants who are not near as good at basketball as the almighty Creighton, don't you know?!? The same Creighton whose power sport has never seen a Sweet 16 in modern times; the same Creighton whose power sport, in its best season ever, can't win its regular or conference tournament; the same Creighton that is so superior to "little brother."

So in short... Nebraska may very well lose to Baylor. I read posts on this site and I see NOBODY mocking Baylor... taking them lightly... saying it'll be easy...

Are we ribbing Creighton and hoping to play them? Of course - that's normal.

But these morons take it to a new level, and its very fun to watch happen. Its like watching Jose Valverde try to close out a baseball game during the 2013 season.

You see, NU very well MAY lose before Creighton, even TO Creighton.

But if it happens, you know what???

This is your best year in program history. Daddy loses his shiniest toy, his 26 year old whack ass frat boy PG and "little brother" down the street, TWO YEARS EARLY, has all the momentum building in the world.

And that makes "little brother" awfully difficult to deal with.

Golly gee wiz, I kept reading your view of the Jays to see if by the end...You really liked them!...yet by the end I started to think, you may not be a B J fan!

Creighton Fan is in a situation to eat ultimate crow potentially.  You talk about no win situations potentially unfolding.  This would qualify.  You have never once heard from Nebraska fans that we are better than they are.  That they are the ugly ducking program etc.  They have gone there though.  While somewhat unlikely we get through Baylor, you know they don't like the smell of this.  Well lets win and then get it on.  If our staff needs motivation, I can dig up plenty of quotes from the dumpster fire message board they have.

Bravo Dave. I never got the "I don't" mind Creighton part of our fan base (I won't even talk about the "Jayskers"). I am a fan of the University of Nebraska in all sports and always have been.

Of course they know that their little run against NU is over. Miles will own McDermott, period.

It would be absoulutely epic to get by Baylor, get all the headlines for our first win and than spoil their "dream season". Hope this is going to happen, though BU will be a tough game for the Huskers, obviously.

Go Huskers

If you only casually follow sports/just Husker football you might think about Creighton the same way you think about UNO....especially if you don't live in Omaha.

I'm perfectly fine with Creighton not losing every single game...it's going to be a lot more satisfying beating Creighton teams in the future that way and it doesn't mean a RPI hit.  Once again, this game on ESPN means a lot more to us nationally than it appearing on NET.  I'm even more fine with us beating them so consistently they want to get out of playing us every year.

I get the Crayton Hatin though...I personally feel it a lot more towards Iowa.

I thought Sip really nailed it, btw.  Pretty good for a hack ;)

Miles, with his quips, deftly adds bursts of fuel to the Creighton-Nebraska banter. He is the antithesis to Creighton's hoops aura. CU takes itself very, very seriously. Miles notices, obviously.

I'm not one who hates Creighton, and I wouldn't mind it if they make run (if we bow out). It's probably because I moved out of state in 2002 and hadn't lived in Omaha since 1997 so I didn't have to deal with all the obnoxious fans.

I try to remind myself that not all Creighton fans are like Matt Perrault and the caustic jackwagons who populate le Bleujay Underground.  It's tough because I don't come into contact with many Bleujay fans other than the ones I happen to find on the internet.  I'm sure they're decent folks, otherwise.

Cousin Mose is good folks.  And there've been others who could at least discuss things reasonably.  We've had a few of them join us on our board.   I try to remind myself that most Creighton fans are probably more like Cousin Mose and less like Lincoln Jay.  And I also try to remember that a few of our number have given us a bad name as well.

Bottom line is I don't like the magnitude of negativity involved in this rivalry.  I blame much of that on Matt Perrault, although it was headed that direction before he came to town.  My first experience with internet trolls was with Creighton fans who wanted to rub our noses in the excrement any time one of Collier's teams lost, no matter who the opponent was.

But, having said all of that, I like this bracket.  I dreamt of drawing them in a Round of 32 match-up and giving us another shot to shut some of those snot-nosed brats the hell up.  I think we have some tools this year.  Some weapons.  We're not coming to this fight unarmed.  Not saying we will beat Baylor, but I do think we can.  And I'm not saying we will beat Creighton, but I don't think it's a foregone conclusion that we lose to them either.

And I want it if for no other reason than to muzzle some of the more obnoxious internet posters within le Bleujay fanbase.

A few weeks back I read a post on the Creighton board that referred to our "cute little run to the CIT."

And now, if/when we lose to Baylor or Creighton this weekend, they will mock us. The same fanbase that proclaimed us as talented as a mid-level SWAC team back in December (yes, that was actually said seriously) will laugh at us when we are eliminated from the NCAA Tournament when we were picked last in the Big Ten, in the second year of our head coach, and have 1 senior who is a role player. After they beat us, they said that all our momentum from the new arena was gone and that we had missed our moment to get better. They are as delusional as it comes. Sadly, I'm not confident the dream will come true this year of ending their season, mostly because Baylor will be extremely tough to beat in San Antonio. We are a young team who has way overachieved, and unfortunately sometimes teams play with a "happy to be there" attitude. I hope we don't, but I wouldn't be surprised.

But, the future is as bright as it gets, and this time, there's actual evidence on the court to show that.

Newsflash: Every fan base has douches. For some reason, they all seem to have connections to the internet and a compulsion to type nonsense every five minutes. But to generalize from the worst people to all people is unwise.

I've been a fan of both teams since the 70s. Part of that is moving to the state in 76, living in Bellevue, and having my first basketball games be Creighton games (I grew up in Europe, no high level hoops there at that time). I saw Larry Bird personally demolish the Jays, still one of my favorite memories of the sport.

Most adults can root for both teams, understanding the differences between the two schools and the limitations of a rivalry given the fact that Creighton doesn't play football.

I'm all for anything that improves the visibility and desirability of basketball in Nebraska, and I think having two quality programs enhances that goal.

I think you hit it on the head with "scared"

Their whole season has been about:

  • Winning the first new Big East regular season title - FAIL
  • Winning the first new Big East tournament title - FAIL
  • Reaching the Sweet 16 - ???

Now they're the clear favorite with all the pressure this weekend. With two FAILs already in the books, the pressure is enormous to at least reach the Sweet 16.

Instead of getting sent to a familiar city in St Louis, they get shipped to San Antonio where in the round of 32 they have to face two of the hottest teams since February from the two best conferences. They'll have to face a Baylor team a couple hours from its campus, or they have to face a rival team in NU looking for revenge that has nothing to lose and that has played lately nothing like the Husker team CU already saw this season. Then they have to deal with being the villain in San Antonio, thanks in part to their "favorite" status and thanks in part to the UNC fans this weekend who still hate them from a couple of years ago.

Pressure.

Let's face it - CU hasn't exactly handled the pressure very well this season. They had a one-half game lead in the Big East title race with the tie-breaker in hand and all the momentum with 5 games left ... and choked it away. They had the Big East tournament title gift-wrapped for them by Seton Hall ensuring they wouldn't have to beat 'Nova a 3rd time ... and choked it away.

Then you start looking to the future, where Dougie is getting on a passenger train out of Omaha - maybe as early as Sunday - and where there's a scarlet and cream bullet-speed freight train coming from the southwest ... and the pressure to accomplish something memorable - anything memorable - in their once in a lifetime season grows by the day.

They're really good & they may very well get to the Sweet 16 .. but much better teams than CU have succumbed to the pressure of this time of year.

I am a Nebraska Cornhusker fan first and foremost.  That being said, I will be sitting in my seat Friday in the AT & T center with my Nebraska sweatshirt on pulling madly for NU, when that game is over, I will unveil my Creighton T-Shirt and pull for the Jays.  When, not if, we meet in the round of 32 Sunday it will be all Nebraska.

(Geez I cannot believe how many typos I make)

The attention that the STATE of Nebraska can garner from this will be great for basketball for both schools.  NU needs to recruit Nationally as does Creighton.  I haven't been in the state since '97 but I pulled for Creighton back when Paul Silas, Bob Portman and Tom Apke played and coached.  But Nebraska comes first.  I say good luck to both and may the best team wins Sunday.

No, no they haven't. This is Creighton's best team since in the current era of Bluejay hoops (Altman to present day).  Creighton has never had what they haver right now and may never again. This is the gold standard at Creighton and will be for some time. Which isn't to say they won't be good, they very well may continue to be good or even very good, but it's unlikely they'll see this level of a team anytime soon.

Can't do, won't do it.

Creighton's 74 team (I believe) should have made the Sweet 16 when they got hosed by Kansas.  That team had Gene Harmon and Ralph Bobik.  Eddie Sutton was the coach.  He won a few games in his career.

Ha - no worries - and I agree with you - this is as good as it gets for CU - hopefully NU gets to put an end to it on Sunday  :)
