For the Big 12 site, I use two-or-three-letter abbreviations for the teams when listing games.  For the Big 10, I discovered finding separate abbreviations for each team would be difficult (Iowa/Illinois/Indiana, Nebraska/Northwestern, Minnesota/Michigan), so I went with the longer ones you see on the Big 10 version.

 

Any opinions on the abbreviations I chose?  I could change OSU to Ohio St, PSU to Penn St, etc.  I also am not sure what to do about Northwestern without making it too long.

 

I think in general these longer ones are more readable than what's on the Big 12 version, and I think I may change the Big 12 version next season to use abbreviations more like these ones.

I tried that at first (IA, IL, IN, MN, etc), but then I quickly realized that it wasn't very easy to quickly identify what teams were playing.  For someone who lives and breathes Big 10, it probably would work ok.

 

I'm leaning toward keeping it the way it is right now.  I might use Illinois' full name:  due to the font not being fixed-width, it really isn't any wider than "Purdue" despite being two letters longer.  I might do the same with Indiana as well.

 

EDIT:  I did change it to use "Illinois" and "Indiana".  I tried "Ohio St" and "Penn St", but I didn't like it -- the extra spaces hurt readability.

Thursday 2/27 upsets keep NU in the hunt for a first-round bye, but just barely - NU loses the tiebreaker with Iowa - if tied with OSU, NU loses the tie-breaker if Michigan wins the league, but wins the tie-breaker if MSU or Wisky win the league (assuming NU defeats Wisconsin) - and NU finishes last in a 3-way tie-breaker with Iowa & OSU - so NU probably needs to win out to get to 11-7 and hope Iowa & OSU each lose once more to prevent any tie-breakers for 4th

NU holds serve in race for #4 seed - and now can do no worse than #7 seed.

 

Meanwhile Michigan all but clinches #1 seed - it would take a lot of things to break correctly for Wisky to steal the #1 seed from Mich

You guys are right - I misread the tie-breaker rule, thought it said 2-0 was better than 1-0, it actually says the opposite and the winning percentage is what matters, not the number of games played vs an opponent. I'll fix it.

Three tight games Sunday, but only Indiana could pull the upset. Should be a fun final week! And RPIForecast still has NU's expected conf record at 10-8, even though we're underdogs in our final two games, so that means that both games are tight enough that the statistics say we have a good chance to win one of them.

 

Looks like the jockeying for the last two first-round byes -- Michigan and Wisconsin have clinched byes -- and the #9 thru #12 seeds will be tight this week.
