Lipscomb in December of '03, but other than that we haven't played those other teams.

Ok fine. The last 20 years are blurry anyway. I'll be fine. I'll be super jacked for the first game next year because it is the first game at Pinnacle, not because of the opponent.

I am completely jacked to have this kind of energy and athleticism come to Lincoln for the first game at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

The NCAA Tourney highlights start at about the 1:00 mark

FGCU Is The First 15-Seed In History To Make The Sweet 16

Relying on athleticism, crazy dunks, and opponents' belief that they must be a mirage as no school named "Florida Gulf Coast" could actually exist, the FGCU Eagles are headed to Dallas as the first 15-seed in the Sweet 16 in NCAA history.

Its a game we should win easily and when we do win it will look good because of the tourney last year. It's a win win. Beat a scrub team but get some love because of their success last year. I like it

this. although i think theyre better than scrubs

We had to take the best team we could get, and this is probably it. Did anyone really think that KU, Duke or Kentucky were going to come open the arena? What would be the gain for a "major power" team to do that? I'm pretty happy with these guys. Just wish they still had their old coach (and his spouse) to bring along

I would say this is a game we should win, but I wouldn't expect us to win it easily.  A W by any margin will suffice for me considering our lack of experience going into next season.

There is a good chance Nebraska won't be favored in the game

What did we say about FGC when we played them here a couple of seasons ago?

We didn't say very nice things, that's for sure.

This is stupid and I don't understand how I'm supposed to be excited about this. This game would be a complete joke had FGCU not won some games this year in the tournament. Nobody would know who they are (just like nobody knew who they were 2 years ago when they came here) had they not won those NCAA tournament games. Quite frankly, a lot of our newer season ticket holders who may just be casual basketball fans and may not have watched every game of the NCAA tournament, will probably need an explanation as to who this FGCU team is.

Plus Doc was able to pull the W against them two years ago, and nobody said nice things, so Miles better come away with a win.

Dude, you didn't have to watch every game of the NCAA tourney to know who FGCU is. Dunk City was viral and they were everywhere. After this last NCAA tourney, there are probably more casual fans that don't know who Nebrasketball is than there are fans that don't know who FGCU is.

It's up to you whether or not you like the game, but it's crazy to say that people won't know who they are.

"This game would be a complete joke had FGCU not won some games this year in the tournament."

...but they did...and they made it to the Sweet 16...

FGCU blew up last year, they aired a pep rally live on ESPN, ESPN also couldn't go 5 minutes without talking about them. I'm not saying it was the best move we could make but still there will be some hype around this game. Not to mention they are returning 4 out of the 5 starters from a team that made the sweet 16.

Maybe went overboard with some of my comments. Just my initial reaction to not being as thrilled as others and how some are making this matchup sound. I guess I just expected too much and came away disappointed. I mean, we just played them. I realize what they did last year was special but for me this feels the same as when we would play Arkansas-Pine Bluff twice within three years or some of our other frequent non-conf opponents. David Lipscomb, IUPUI, Denver, Houston Baptist...

The only thing different with playing FGCU and Arkansas-Pine Bluff is one does not help the RPI at all while another could be very beneficial to our RPI.  Look at the schedule Miles put together last year.  That baby had us on the rim of the bubble RPI wise had we won a few more of those 2-5 point losses.  I think Miles knows how to schedule to give us the best chance to win AND make the tournie.  FGCU is one of those teams (a team that we can beat, but one who also wants to prove they are the real deal by playing anyone anywhere.)

I'm looking forward to seeing 5 teams that played in the Sweet 16 last season, even if those 5 teams aren't entirely the same as the year before.

It should be a fun ride in the 1st year at the PBA.  Hopefully NU can slam the "Dunk City" hoopla & jam their way to a Husker victory in the process!!

Florida Gulf Coast reminds me a little (just a little. mind you) of the Florida State football program back in the late 70's, early 80's when they came into Lincoln and gave us fits.  I know there's no comparison with Husker football and basketball tradition, but I can see these guys coming in here and making our life a living hell.   Just saying....

Steve Spurrier renamed FSU Free Shoes University.  I wonder what FGCU would be?  Free GyneCology University?  What a scandal that would be.  Players up to their elbows in......

Never mind.

This works well for an opener. This won't be an impressive win in March (seriously doubt an RPI below 100), but in November it will be something to get everyone excited and that's all that matters. As was pointed out elsewhere, this is the best we could do, so enjoy it.

FGCU was a top100 RPI team last season...

A win vs a top100 RPI team is an impressive win in March...

FGCU:

RPI: 93

Record: 21-10

wins vs RPI 1-50: 3

wins vs RPI 51-100: 1

wins vs RPI 101-150: 3

wins vs RPI 151-200: 1

wins vs RPI 200+: 16

Nebraska:

RPI: 103

Record: 14-17

wins vs RPI 1-50: 1

wins vs RPI 51-100: 2

wins vs RPI 101-150: 3

wins vs RPI 151-200: 6

wins vs RPI 200+: 3

Some of you have been equating the game vs FGCU to games vs Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Lipscomb, IUPUI, Houston Baptist, etc.  This comparison is laughably far from accurate.

RPI rankings:

FGCU: 93

Arkansas-Pine Bluff: 202

Lipscomb: 236

IUPUI: 326

Houston Baptist: 310

FGCU finished last season with an RPI ranked in top100, finished season ranked #25 in polls, made it to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament... Nebraska playing FGCU is nowhere near comparable to Nebraska playing Arkansas Pine Bluff, Lipscomb, IUPUI, and/or Houston Baptist.

I was the poster who threw those teams out there during my rant. I was the only one who mentioned those schools for all I know. I was in no way, shape, or form trying to equate the RPI of those teams to the RPI of a Florida Gulf Coast. I didn't even mention RPI. When I made those comments I threw out the names of the worst Nebraska non-conference opponents that I could remember knowing full well that those teams are usually in the 300+ range. So nobody is comparing FGCU to any of those teams. What I was doing was making known my initial disappointment in hearing that FGCU was the opener and saying that, for me, this game was going to have the feel of any other random game versus a non conference opponent. For me. All about the feel of the game and nothing about whether the opponent is going to be good or bad for our RPI next season. Obviously, even if FGCU isn't as good as they were this last season, they will have more of a positive effect on our RPI than an RPI killing 300+ team.

Yeah, sorry, I wasn't trying to direct that all just at you.  I posted in response to a combination of posts.  I posted that in response to the talk of FGCU being like those teams, but also the talk about how it was going to be an easy win, wouldn't be considered a good win in March, they are scrubs, etc.

Win-win unless we lose... Won't be an easy win by any means. Not as tho we return a ton of experience or cohesiveness.

A few things about your post.  1.  FGCU did win some games in the tournament so it obviously should be judged based on that.   2.  The casual basketball fan needs to have a lot of things explained to them.  3.  FGCU is a hell of a lot better than they were back then.

I think it is important to win the game.  This is a game we should win against an interesting foe.
