Swan88 Posted April 17, 2013 Report Posted April 17, 2013 With the last three Nebrasketball recruiting targets consisting of two JUCOs (Smith and Tummala) and a foreign player (Herbert), we are reminded of the following Tim Miles quotes: "junior college players and foreign players are 'more high risk'" than high school recruits. and "Juco's are like peach schnapps. Enjoy in moderation." A couple observations are pertinent: First, neither Sai Tummala nor Leslee Smith enrolled in junior college because of high school academic deficiencies, so neither presents the higher risk Tim Miles mentioned: -- Leslee Smith started his college career at SMU and has performed well academically at both SMU and his junior college, and -- Sai Tummala started his college career as a "preferred walkon" at Michigan, which may suggest some sort of academic scholarship assistance, and is an exceptionally strong student. Second, Mikael Herbert's father is a Canadian expatriate living in Finland. Accordingly, Mikael Herbert is not a typical foreigner dealing with language issues, TOEFL requirements, and similar "foreigner" problems. Norm Peterson and Nebrasketballer 2 Quote
GATA Posted April 17, 2013 Report Posted April 17, 2013 I guess what it comes down to is what exactly did Miles mean when talking about jucos and foreign players being high risk. Did he mean academically or projecting them at the D-I level? I assumed he meant a combination of projection/academics. Quote

Accordingly, Mikael Herbert is not a typical foreigner dealing with language issues, TOEFL requirements, and similar "foreigner" problems. Tummala will also have 3 years of eligibility, instead of the usual 2 years. Both Tummala and Smith are already physically developed to the point that they can contribute in the Big Ten right away. Herbert is 6'10", 230 lbs, and athletic. He will still require some time to develop physically, but he is coming in without needing the same EXTREME weight gain/weight loss as last few foreign post players that Nebraska has brought in. He is also much more athletic. He was offered by Utah, Long Beach State and Kansas State, and had heavy interest from Miami, Boston College and Michigan. He has much more upside than any of the others have had. I would love to see Nebraska start pulling high school recruits from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, etc, but Nebraska doesn't have those connections/relationships yet. It sounds like that is something that Miles is going to fix with the new coaching hires. Quote
PimpMario Posted April 17, 2013 Report Posted April 17, 2013 High risk to me means that there is a good chance they wont be able to play major college basketball. In other words they wont be very good. Meaning they won't pan out. Creighton Fan 1 Quote

golfer3 Posted April 19, 2013 Report Posted April 19, 2013 At this point NU can't be picky. We need a full roster for next season. Until we have some success, if they have talent we have to take them assuming reasonable character. I wonder if Miles regrets not following up on Doc's two big men? Both played this season against Creighton. The one whose last name started with an "F" could have played this year. He was serviceable. The other was a juco with little high school experience but showed promise with a redshirt year and three years to play, I believe. He had upside and may have been worth the risk. With the new arena one year away and a state-of-the-art practice facility I am unmoved by Miles recruiting. Im equally unmoved by his ability to keep coaches. At least when Doc lost coaches they were to top programs, Marquette and UCLA. Miles is losing to Minny and Bradley. I hope the new AD is giving Miles money to keep coaches. Matthews got a 60% increase in pay to go to UCLA and was the lead recruuiter for S Mohamned, a likely freshman 1st round pick. I don't like the off court direction NU is moving. It is always a bummer to lose coaches, but at the same time it shows that Miles knows how to assemble a staff that is good enough for others to want. Both Coleman and Johnson moved closer to home so you can't really blame them. I'm guessing you a trolling a bit, but just wanted to give my 2 cents. Quote

We need a full roster for next season. Until we have some success, if they have talent we have to take them assuming reasonable character." This is 100% the wrong move to make. Nebraska absolutely cannot take player just to have a full roster next season. Do I want Nebraska to have a full roster next season? Yes. But that is only if the right players are available for Nebraska to sign. Just taking players in order to make sure Nebraska has a full roster is one of the reasons that Nebraska has been where they have been under previous coaching staffs. You don't take a handful of players that are a reach, just to have a full roster, and then cross your fingers hoping it works out, because those players take up roster spots in future years as well. "I wonder if Miles regrets not following up on Doc's two big men? Both played this season against Creighton. The one whose last name started with an "F" could have played this year. "With the new arena one year away and a state-of-the-art practice facility I am unmoved by Miles recruiting." Not sure what your issue with recruiting is. Is Nebraska expected to start signing classes full of 4-Star/5-Star players in the first season? No. The current recruiting class is better than any recruiting class that Nebraska has had for a long time. And Nebraska is still looking at 2 more players. Nebraska has signed a 4-Star in this recruiting class. When was the last time Nebraska did that before Miles came to town? Nebraska has signed 2 players ranked in the top-25 of their position. When was the last time Nebraska did that before Miles came to town? http://espn.go.com/college-sports/basketball/recruiting/player/_/id/169923/tai-webster http://espn.go.com/college-sports/basketball/recruiting/player/_/id/104934/nick-fuller "Im equally unmoved by his ability to keep coaches. People move back closer to home. It happens. Johnson moved back home and also back to his alma mater. Again, not sure what you expect differently out of this situation. It would likely be the same situation if a former Nebraska football player was offered a chance to come back to Nebraska and coach. Would the fans at Oregon get bent out of shape if Scott Frost came back to coach at Nebraska if he was offered the job? I don't imagine that they would be. It happens. Troll. Quote
