That dude is out of control.  Lucky he doesn't have charges filed against him, if he did that "in real life" he would be charged with battery, or some other more serious crime.

I just saw that.  Incredible that he got away with it that long.  There's no room for that in life.  Plenty of ways to motivate people without breaking them down.  I'm okay with a coach getting fired up and yelling at players to get a message across, but there is a line that shouldn't be crossed.  I'll never understand the demasculinization tactic.

I saw Sek throw the ball at Standhardinger's head one day in practice. Christian gave Ubel's jewels a more than playful tap during a scrimmage and Sek went after him and had to be pulled back. Doc threw Christian out of practice for it. Needless to say, it was one of the more exciting days of watching practice and something I wasn't sure I could post here at the time. I sure it is ok now. :P

some of these people need pre-employment psych evals. this dude should be forced to coach latrell sprewell for one week. that should take care of the problem.

I think it'd be better for him to coach 7th grade girls.

Ah hell, no wonder these kids these days are turning into such wimps.

In my day my coach would do that all day, while we were barefooted, in the snow while he chased us up a hill, BOTH WAYS!!!

These guys won't have lasted a day in our day.

Welcome to the Big Ten, but one would suspect that Jim Delany has a message for the State University of New Jersey, as in their "Scarlet" (knight) letter will be forthcoming if Rice continues his employment.

After seeing L-Ville #5 Kevin Ware's unbelievable broken leg, and now this: I have witnessed the gamut of insult to injury in a matter of days.

Glad he was fired.  It's one thing to yell and cuss (some may not agree) but to use homophobic slurs and throw basketballs is just ridiculous.

The wost thing is that Eric Murdock (coach who brought this to everybody's attention) probably won't be a coach again.  The bad thing is that other coaches are so loyal that they'll treat him like a snitch.

Also heard that Seth Greenburg on ESPN was asked about this and he said something along the lines of he needed to see a full practice over a week period to say that this was more than a one time occurance.  That's pretty bad on Greenburg.

Would have to guess that the AD isn't on very solid ground either having known about this behavior for as long as he did without taking action.

Also, how is it possible that his players stood for this kind of treatment?

I suppose you might be right that Murdock has put his coaching career at risk. All the more reason to admire him.

I was surprised to see he already gave an on camera response to this from some local news station.  It seems like he was faking getting chocked up when he was talking, I haven't seen him talk enough to say that is for sure though.

I kinda thought the same thing.  Didn't look to genuine.  Hopefully it was.

Most of the pushing didn't seem all that bad.  Looked to be in context with defense and position with a few that weren't.  Thought ESPN editing tried overselling that a bit.  But throwing basketballs and berating players was a little much.  Probably not the best way to get the most from a team.

You're right, some of the pushing wasn't that bad.  But the forearm to the throat was horrible.  Shoving dudes out of the way after throwing balls at them ain't too good.  Kicking players is always a bad idea.

I also don't have a problem with college kids being sworn at by their coaches.  That doesn't bother me much at all.  But what this guy was doing was too much.

I kept waiting for one of the players to kick the ball back at him when thrown at his feet.

I ask about the players in part to understand the culture of basketball better. In my practice I see families endure and even protect abusive family members -- sometimes at significant personal risk -- for a variety of reasons. But that is usually because they have been at it so long or know nothing different. It is hard to grasp that having been together for only a short while this team as a whole would not have turned on him if this behavior is as bad as it appears to be. I mean, at a certain point they should have stopped caring about playing time or even the scholarship money and made a move to protect themselves and/or their team mates.

One can opine that any of the individual incidences likely does not warrant concern.  It is the accumulation of events that is problematic.  I think a lot of coaches, at almost every level, needs to watch the video, and must evaluate their approach.  I know Doc pushed it at times.  Based (at least in part) on the players temporary boycott, Danny had issues.  Any guesses on Bobby Knight's approach?

What Rice did was bad, but just like with recruiting violations, many of these coaches live in glass houses.  Which coach is willing to throw the first stone?
