I remember the two janitors(custodians) moping the floor at halftime. They would start together in the middle of the court and work their way outward. When they got to their last path, they would pick it up and speed walk to the end. The crowd loved it. They didn’t showboat, just a sly smile from the winner.

I remember that. Seemed like the band would play music that would fit the "race" kind of vibe. Egg 'em on a bit. Something like the Lone Ranger theme (William Tell Overture) but I maybe embellishing my memory.

My two faovorite college teams growing up were....Michigan and Iowa...:)

 

Michigan because of my father (I had no allegiances b/c I grew up in Europe as I mentioned in another recent post) and Iowa because my older sister went to colelge there before I ever knew Nebraska was even a state...:). 

 

As you might imagine,, I didn't take too well to us joining the B1G. It's hard to quickly overhaul a long lifetime of favorites. 

 

Edit: Full disclosure, I still secretly root for those two teams when they're playing anyone else...:) Just like I still do with Creighton for the same reaasons. I was going to CU games before I even set foot in Lincoln for the first time. I remember watching Bird play at the civic in those ridiculous shorts and being blown away by how much better he was than anyone else on the court.

I have an Iowa story, too, sort of... it was out of necessity. I grew up on a central NE farm, well, outside of Aurora, NE, imagine that? lol

 

Anyhow, there was an Albion satellite station for a Sioux City TV station, and they religiously showed the Dr. Tom Davis Show every week, that I had stumbled across. Well, me being a rabid basketball junkie, I latched onto it!! I grew to love Dr. Tom much like NU's Dr. Tom Osborne. Both upstanding men who led their teams well. He taught the fundamentals on his 30-min. weekly program for "Iowa Basketball Hoops," as I recall the name, which may not be accurate... nevertheless, I liked the 'Hawks when Roy Marble Sr., B.J. Armstrong, and Acie Earl were roaming the court in the late 80s... It wasn't a "love 'em" type of situation because Nebraska basketball was my love, but I didn't hate 'em either! Turned that liking of BJ Armstrong into lapping up all things Chicago Bulls with the help of MJ, of course. Despite being a poor farmer fam, I did have the original Air Jordans. Loved those shoes, wore 'em out, & donated them to missionaries... memories...

Man, was so hoping I'd see Bob Grattopp in this thread. My grandfather was his high school coach in Geneva. Heard so many wonderful stories about him. Always remember going to the Sports Center growing up and finding his lifesize picture on the wall with other all-conference players.

Yes, that was one of my biggest memories from the Coliseum days.  My dad said to look at the floor sweepers, and I thought it was awesome.

I also can't remember what my first game was but had to be in the mid-1980s as I was a huge Brian Carr fan. Some games I'll never forget. 

 

1. Danny Manning dribbling off his foot in 1988. I think the Jayhawks ended up okay that year. And Sports Reference says we finished 2-10 after that game. 

 

2. Being there for "the shot" against Michigan State. Was a freshman in high school. My all-time favorite team until this year.

In my memory he's hitting baseline jumpers. Probably on a kickout from Hoppen. But I was about 9 years old, so I'm not sure about that.

If memory serves, my first game in person was during the 80-81 season. We were playing Oklahoma St. and their star player was Leroy Combs who was a sophomore. I was a sophomore in high school and I believe I was there with my brother and his wife. At the start of the game we were seated on the planks at the top of the arena behind one of the baskets. I believe just before opening tip we spotted someone we knew in the student section below us and we were able to sneak in and joined them under the hoop. Andre Smith was a senior, Jack Moore a junior and Greg Downing a soph. The atmosphere was crazy and NU came out on top. It was the largest attendance for a NU game ever, 15038 and I was there.

The 1980 Iowa team with Ronnie Lester was a fun team. Lute Olson was the coach and Lester’s injury cost them a potential championship.

Mine was the BDSC in 1990, my freshman year in the student section, vs current BIG foe MSU. Not only was it my first Nebraska BB game it was my first College BB game ever.

Before I went to school at Nebraska I didn't ever consider any other sports there other than Football. I was a huge NBA fan because I grew up in San Antonio and this was just the beginning of the David Robinson era.  I used to go to NBA games all the time and saw George Gervin play often. Still one of my favorite players of all time. This was a great time to be a Spurs fan.

Anyway, seeing the Huskers play up and close got me hooked instantly. Of course I was lucky, however I never thought this would be the high water mark for seasons. A few notes about that season I remember the most:

1. Losing to Murray State. Murray who? Oh yeah the Murray State team that had Popeye Jones and made the NCAA's.

2. Not being impressed by the Big 10 after we beat Illinois (neutral), MSU (home), and Wisconsin (away).
