As long as Notre Dame football can get TV contracts comparable to splitting a pie 10 ways or a bigger pie 20 ways they'll stay independent. Just that simple.

I agree. What I think happens though. Is when we reach the super conference times. Give it about 5 years. Then Notre Dame is not going to be able to schedule as many "marquee" match ups. Teams won't want to schedule Notre Dame. Makes no sense. Why make it harder to get to the playoffs? Especially when you get all the "good" games you need in conference. Now some teams still will. But not enough to have a network shell out the money that makes staying independent as profitable as being apart of the super conferences.

So, all we will have to do is win 7 games in 7 days to win the Big 10 tournament?

In all seriousness, I wonder if we see two brackets the larger this gets. Winners of each bracket play in the B1G championship game.

My preference would be that it ends up as pods. 24 teams. Pods of 4 or 6. Top 2 teams (could be from the same pod) play for the championship.

I want this because it gives teams a chance to win their pod. Something to play for in the madness of 24 teams. Kind of a nod to the way it was. My dream pod is Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

Cornfeds dream scenario for a 24 team Big Ten.

4 six team pods.

Pod 1 USC, UCLA, Oregon, Washington, Stanford, Cal

Pod 2 Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Northwestern

Pod 3 OSU, Michigan State, Michigan, Penn St., Indiana, Purdue

Pod 4 Rutger, Maryland, FSU, Miami, Clemson, North Carolina

I was more referencing a B1G Basketball Championship tournament.  No way, I don’t think, you could do a 20+ team straight bracket.

Yeah, I'm thinking having 4 or 5 courts going at once - playing 2 or 3 times per day. Just squeeze the whole thing into a weekend. We've got a ton of football players we can add to the roster to give us an edge in that format.

Nope, no chance - probably leave out the last few teams in the standings - limit it to 12-16 teams and do it over 4-5 days.

Let the leftover teams play a B1G NIT Tournament. We probably could receive better treatment in that tournament than the real NIT and get a 3 or 4 seed.

Im guessing everyone will still get that pipe dream chance of making the dance as a terrible team.

Two options would be two sets of brackets and a winner take all game at the end like baseball

OR

Play in games between the bottom X teams to see who makes the B1G tournament

crazy to type out.

I've been wrong every step of the way when it comes to conference realignment. But here's my 2 cents worth.  I don't see 24 team conferences. There are 65 Power 5 members. Three 24 mega conferences adds up to 72.  They are not adding members to this elite group. However, three 18 member conferences is 56, leaving room for the ACC and remaining pac12 schools and independents to still be in the party.

Jim Rose threw out this theory this morning.  I'm not necessarily sure I agree, but...  18 team leagues allow for 3, 6 pod divisions.  For football, you have the winners of the pods plus one wild card.  Semi finals and finals to determine the conference champion.

Here's my addition to his thought:

For basketball, play each other head to head. That's 17 games.  Do you need more?  If so, designate a rival, or two, for each team they play home and homes.

All the other sports take care of themselves and greatly improve the B1G with this new lineup.

Not that it matters, but the number 18 is considered a very blessed number in Jewish culture.  Just one of those random cip thoughts.  🙂

My wife is Jewish; It's a sign! I dig it. I just need to get rid of a pod and tweak the other three. 1st thought is kick Rutgers and Maryland over to the Pac 10 schools and call it a day.

You keep talking about having two brackets and the winners play.  That is what a tourney bracket already is.  There are two sections of it and the winners play,  nothing would change by simply calling it “2” brackets other than potentially using two different locations.
