bleujay Posted August 9, 2017 Report Posted August 9, 2017 solid pickup for Miles. The combination of height and mobility is useful at any level of D1...i think the biggest factor for brady going forward is developing his body and, once he arrives on campus, adjusting from the class b level of competition to the big ten level. Could Miles end up pulling out a redshirt for him? That could help Brady make up a ton of ground. He was a guy I would have liked to see in blue, but I respect his decision in not choosing to reclassify... Quote

Huskerpapa Posted December 31, 2017 Report Posted December 31, 2017 Through 8 games the kid is averaging 20.5 points and 11.1 rebounds per game this season. Has anyone watched him play? At this level he should be dominating, unless he has no other support on his team. Quote

Are you saying he's not dominating? Those are pretty good numbers. Quote

I also expect him to be the dominate player on the floor each game. Has anyone watched him play a significant number of games to opine whether or not he is indeed dominating? Quote

I haven't seen him play this year, but dominating isn't the right word for him. He's not a back to the basket player who can use his height to score over people. Much more likely to get points on lobs, drives and jumpers. He also plays with a really good high school guard, Nate Thayer, who in a lot of ways is more the focus of their offense. throwback 1 Quote
throwback Posted January 1, 2018 Report Posted January 1, 2018 (edited) Saw him play 2 years ago a bit and again last year - made a nice improvement from soph to jr year, but was far from a polished offensive player. If he's at 20+ and 11+ this season, that suggests another very nice improvement for him & probably even more than what I would've expected. Saw somewhere - probably earlier in this thread - that he had developed his jumper this summer, so I'd guess that's paying off in an increased scoring average. Being a threat off the jump shot is something he'll need at NU. Looking forward to seeing him play again this year. Will be really nice to have him in Lincoln, but agree he likely will need a redshirt. Edited January 1, 2018 by throwback Quote
Dean Smith Posted January 2, 2018 Report Posted January 2, 2018 I saw that the York Holiday tournament was going to be streamed online so I watched him play the two games in the tournament. They lost to York and then beat a very bad Elkhorn team. He biggest strength seems to be he is tall and and can make layups. Moves relatively well and has come a long way in just catching the ball from his Sophomore year when he just couldn't. He can dribble a bit but I wouldn't go as far as to say he is "skilled." Has a decent midrange jumper but is slow to get it off. That is not an issue in Class B but will be when he plays guys as tall as him. He doesn't seem to have any go to post move. I don't know what kind of weight program they have there and I know some people just have a hard time gaining weight, but he is very weak. Emphasis on the very. His shot was affected on multiple occasions by players 7 or 8 inches shorter simply by muscling him up. It made a lot of his shots come up short. York has some thick athletes from their state football team and he struggled when he got the ball in the post. He was much more effective with offensive rebounds and running the floor. Made some bad decisions and seemed to get frustrated by getting muscled up. He really forced some shots off the dribble (the guy on Striv said it was the most shots he had taken in game this year) but he was forced away from the basket due to lack of strength and all of those shots came up short. It seemed to me that he was too demonstrative when calls went against him and whined a lot during the York game. Not so much against Elkhorn but they did what they wanted that night. I thought his biggest strength was he had good timing on blocking shots, granted from players up to a foot shorter than him. In Class B he can be dominate. As much as he struggled against York he had a ton of blocks because they kept coming at him and he scored in the 20's. He rebounds well because he is mobile and goes and gets the ball. He needs to redshirt. Not doing it can't be an option for him. He is the definition of project. If he gets twice as strong as he is now (maybe more), gains 40 pounds or so and learns a post move he might be OK. He might get a couple of blocks but I would assume post players for UNK, Wayne State and even York College would eat him up at this time. Husker4theSpurs and throwback 2 Quote

And I would guess most would take him being a solid role player for 2-3 seasons. You need those type of guys too i talked to a buddy that watched the York game in person that’s coached at high levels and he said the kid can eventually help after good work in strength and conditioning. Said he was better than he thought he was going to be. Moved well for a kid that size and had an above average shot. Desperately needs to put on weight Quote

I guess I'd pictured him as a 4 in college, not a 5 - granted, I've only seen him play a few times - does he move well enough that he could play at the 4 a little more quickly? Obviously that's where the development of mid-range jumper becomes key, plus a 3 pt shot would be nice. And certainly strength is still a huge part, especially at the B1G level, so he needs a redshirt regardless. I mean, my freshman year I put on weight without hardly even trying, so I'm sure he can do it. Hopefully his diet will be a bit different than mine was. I've always thought he moved much better than I'd expect a kid his size & age to move, even as a sophomore, allowing him to block shots well, rather than pick up fouls when teams try to be physical with him. Again, he does have a significant height advantage most nights though. Quote
Art Vandalay Posted January 2, 2018 Report Posted January 2, 2018 He reminds me of Rich King back in the day. He is actually ahead of where Rich was at that time. That is not to say he will turn out anywhere near that bar but I do think he has good skill and a ton of room to grow and get stronger. I am glad we are taking him, hopefully he has a good work ethic and it turns out well. Quote

I haven't seen enough to make judgements on his lateral quickness but that is something that can be developed. He took a couple of threes during the tournament and actually made one but it's not something I would call a strength right now. The key to his success at Nebraska will be his work ethic. He has some obvious weaknesses right now but if he is willing to put in the work starting with his diet, SAQ, strength training, and skill development he can be somebody that gives us meaningful minutes in his career. That is the definition of a project. If he is willing to admit his deficiencies and bust his butt he can make himself a player. But he will have to be willing to outwork most D-1 players who are ahead of him at this point. He is a Nebraska kid so he's worth the shot. He has committed to the program so I'll be rooting for him. Rich liked to get the ball with his back to the basket and I feel Brady is more comfortable facing. I think they will be greatly different players in college. Rich spent some time in the NBA so we can seriously hope our commit turns out to be in the same neighborhood. Quote

Do you remember what your assessment of Eliason was? I saw Elliot in a state tourney game once. I think it was his junior year but not for sure. Seems like Brady is putting up better numbers against the same level of competition that Eliason was playing at. That's not the only or even best judge of their ability but it does give a ball park idea. I think Eliason was like what you say of Rich King: More of a back-to-the-basket player who had pretty deft touch around the hoop and had a couple of post moves. But he, like Brady at the same age, was pretty weak. He was playing that game against a much shorter defender who was probably an offensive lineman on the HS football team and he was able to keep Elliot from getting good post position. I remember coming away from watching that game thinking that I hoped we could find someone better. Quote
