Early on the year I focus more on kenpom rpi. As the year goes on the normal rpi gains more meaning.

I decided to check today. We are 159th. But the really eye opening stat is 1-10 against the top 100.

Omaha is 135 and Creighton is 85. I wonder who would win if we played both of them right now

The only ones that concern me are the losses to Northwestern and, of course, Samford. For the most part I thought the Huskers competed quite well most times against some of the very best (sans 2nd half vs Nova). Seems that quite a few of those teams have had great shooting nights to bury Big Red, but that happens on occasion. Can not be the best if you don't compete against the best~!

The biggest difference between KenPom and RPI is that KenPom factors in margin of victory whereas RPI does not. KenPom is based on offensive/defensive efficiency whereas RPI is straight wins and loses. They do tend to mirror each other when the season draws to an end but overall:

KenPom - used for predicting how a game will end based on how the teams are rated

RPI - probably still the primary tool used by the NCAA for determining who is into the field

Just curious. What is your obsession with all of this? The constant CBI talk? The "Our RPI will suck no matter what" talk? Just curious if you want to be that guy that says "See, I told you we wouldn't make the NCAA or NIT"

Just curious your angle? So let me say it now in case it does happen. "Good job Pimp Mario! You were right!" There ya go buddy! Happy Valentines weekend!

This board is dead. Talking about how much we suck is a tried and true Nebrasketball pastime isn't it?

On the way home from the games we always look at the remaiming games and say we will go 1-3 with 2 toss ups.

The good times will be sweeter because we are died hard fans.

I will admit it has been a bit frustrating after the samford and conference opening losing streak that some didn't realize we were eliminated from merit based tournaments.

Creighton would beat us again. We would beat UNO, which plays no defense.

So there you go.

Awesome. I actually like us to beat Creighton and uno to give us trouble.

Can you tell us our final record?

I wish Nebraska would schedule UNO some more. They played in Miles first and third season and they were really fun games to watch.

Also Creighton, who played two or three teams from UNO conference this season, needs to man up and schedule UNO. You have a Summit League team that would love to play you basically in your backyard. Why pay to have Summit League teams come from hundreds of miles away.

No, but I can tell you your broken record negativity is getting old.  And you must not have watched UNO play defense any time recently.

How am I negative? Being realistic isn't negative; I am sorry it isn't.

And I was at unos most recent win. They best a top 50 team, of which we have 1 win against.

Unos defense isn't very good but NUs hasn't been playing good defense either. I trust unos offense more.

I think the huskers have more talent but maybe UNO has a better identity at this point.

You can be realistic without being negative.  Trust me, I have seen it done on this board many times.

We already have a "can we finally talk CBI" thread that this could have gone into.  I can see where some on this board would get the idea that you have a negative attitude toward the team right now.

Realistic Positive- I know we still have a shot at the NIT, but man it isn't looking great right now.  So should we take a CBI bid if we get it?  Our RPI is low, but we have proven we can beat and hang with top 100 teams.  I think with a few wins down the stretch here, the CBI and maybe even the NIT is certainly not out of the question depending on how well we play.

Realistic Negative-  These guys have no shot at the NIT.  Man we can not even get a top 100 win.  Could we even beat UNO right now?  Even the CBI is looking like a long shot with our RPI.

:: hits head against wall ::

We don't have a shot at the NIT. That is not be negative. I mean it might be mathmatically possible to win the regular season championship if we win out and the teams in front of us lose, but it might not because they play each other.

We don't have a shot at the NIT.

Realistic is realistic. My expectations have been pretty spot on the last 15 years. 2013 I was surprised in a great way. 2014 I was surprised in a bad way.

And yeah it felt weird to me and noteworthy that we were 1-10 against the top 100. The narrative is that we are a much better

team than that. Doesn't it feel like we are better than that?

Maybe the msu win made us too big for our britches.

As of right now this isn't an accurate statement.

Narrative that we are a better team than what? You're the Eeyore of this board. Just because everyone else doesn't walk around here with a loser mentality doesn't mean our expectations nor our comprehension of our current status is out of whack.

Are you 100% sure about this? We have no chance? Zero? Zilch? Nada?

There is no scenario in which we could make it into the NIT? Really? Seriously?

I find your statement hard to believe.

Take it with a grain of salt.  Pimp simply doesn't have a good grasp of the significance of the RPI or lack thereof.  He didn't even think Nebraska would make the NIT if we won out starting with Wisconsin.  He was correct by being grossly incorrect.  We were in the NCAA tournament had we done that.   No need to worry about someones thoughts on something they don't understand very well.  As for KenPom versus RPI late in the year.  KenPom is far more accurate reflection.  Even more so now, with more data.

We would be significant favorites over UNO.  We would be minor underdogs against Creighton on a neutral court.

I have nothing to base this opinion on, but I do not believe that the selection folks place as strong an opinion on the RPI any longer.  I think it has become more of a secondary tool since they realized folks could "game the system" like the Missouri Valley teams used to do rather well.

Well that and you can almost watch any game you want to now. Who needs computers when you can actually watch and see if someone "has it." Anyone that has watched our conference season progress that knows anything knows there isn't a team that will want to see us come Conference Tournie time for the shear fact that we can hang with anyone really.

We just got done blowing out a B1G team--heck, we were up by 28 when Miles took his foot off the gas.

And we did it without our top player and without one of our significant bigs.

And we did it starting three freshmen.

And we had a couple sophomores make major progress.

And we find a way to be grumpy and crabby about this team's quality and prospects?

Scheesh.

Fwiw, and I'm not saying UNO plays great defense, but using points allowed as a measure of a defense is not the best way to go about it. Especially when they score so many points and play such a frantic pace. They almost lull you to sleep allowing you to score, because when they turn on the jets, they turn on the jets and you don't have enough gas to play with them.

Not saying we'd lose - I think we'd win - but they're the type of team who would give us absolute fits. Shavon and White would have massive games against them.
