I like him, but I understand the flaws. Relatively unknown going in to the year. Was he adjusting to the game, was it a growth spurt, or was he just a late bloomer? I think at worst he is a project and give Nebraska some depth.

Being relatively unknown is an issue?  Asking because I am not sure I understand what your saying.  Could he just simply be the kid who after being so so or just above average has the light come on and blows up in a good way?

To those who say they aren't impressed by this kid and think maybe he's just blowing up because, at this late stage in the recruiting game, teams are trying to fill up roster vacancies, let me ask what it is you aren't impressed with.

I've answered the question a couple of times in this thread about why I do like him.  I want to know why people hold a different view.  Fill me in.  What is it you see or don't see?

I'm not terribly impressed with the fact that a guy here who coached against him wasn't terribly impressed with him.

That count?

As they guy who coached against him...

1. I figured he would dominate the game, however foul trouble hindered him from doing that

2. Very good athleticism but defensively he jumps on most if not all pump fakes.

3. He PROBABLY isn't ready to play major minutes or start for us now or even next year. However, everything I have heard tells me thay he is an incredibly hard worker and I believe that he very well could be an impact player for us by yesr 2 or 3. Just my 2 cents

I think that's fair and I think that's consistent with what I've said.

Although if it comes down to him or Hammond and Hammond is not progressing, I could see him starting by default.  And holding his own, to be honest.

Here's a comparison for ya.

Brandon Ubel.  He didn't start every game his freshman year.  I wanna say he started about half.  (Just looked it up and he started 16 of 32 games, so exactly half.)  Granted, that team was NOT a great team by any stretch.  So, factor that in a bit.  Would he have started as a freshman on a better team?  Probably not, but he still ended up as a 4 year starter and did some good things for us.

When Brandon committed to us, I found a reasonable amount of film on him.  And I would say without any doubt in my mind that this Edwards kid is better in every respect.  He's more athletic than Brandon Ubel in high school.  He's more skilled.  He's as tall and as stout.  But he's far more skilled.

The old board still exists, last I checked.  Perhaps someone could go find that thread on Ubel and link it here.  There were quite a few posters back then who expressed serious reservations about Brandon and whether he was a legit high major conference kind of player.  I defended Brandon back then because I saw him do some good things.  Still, this kid is better.  I think he has greater agility, better quicks, I think his shooting touch is better, he is a better leaper as shown in his shot blocking ability.

I just think, for comparison purposes, this is a kid who could come in and play significant minutes for us as a freshman and probably more as the season goes along.  Especially if, as MichHusker says, he's known for having a solid work ethic.

Looks like he made the first team as "Captain" on a Detroit Free-Press "All-West Team."  Not sure what that means, but it sounds impressive.

Here's the info:

Michael Edwards

Westland Glenn

6-9, Sr. C (captain)

Edwards averaged 22 points, 12 rebounds, four blocks and two steals. Posted career highs of 20 rebounds in one game and eight blocks in another.

Coach Rod Watts: “Most improvement of any player I’ve ever coached. To go from where he was last year to where he is now, credit his work ethic.”

I could be way off on this assessment (hopefully) but this sounds eerily similar to the swings and misses we took early on in the Miles recruiting era. Kid comes in, wasn't ever seriously considering Nebraska, has never been to Nebraska before, but the visit 'totally changes' the recruits thoughts on Nebraska. The new Robin article gives me this feel.

Taking a swing, missing, and striking out is 100 times better than watching a pitch go by for a called strike 3.

Does Georgia have as an immediate need for a big guy (aka playing time) as we do? Also, we'll travel to Michigan every year I would think, which is a chance for family to see him in person.

That has to be advantage Huskers compared to Georgia.
