nebrasketball10 Posted March 23, 2014 Report Posted March 23, 2014 Walt had a fantastic year and made great strides. That said, he has plenty of room for continued improvement on both ends. I hope he reaches his full potential. Hopefully Kenya can help him develop an inside game. a0t0w0 1 Quote
Section_316 Posted March 23, 2014 Report Posted March 23, 2014 What a joke... Do you remember any of the many BIG shots this dude made down the stretch for us this year? Get a life clown Nebrasketballer, a0t0w0 and Bugeaters1 3 Quote
uneblinstu Posted March 23, 2014 Report Posted March 23, 2014 Walter's got the most potential of any player on the team. He's just scratched the surface of how good he can be. To be 6' 10" and shoot at the level he does is a serious weapon not many teams have. He needs to get stronger and better defensively, he'd tell you that, too, I bet, but dude might be the most talented player on the team, IMO. Just needs to keep refining it. TomEadesSucks Posted March 23, 2014 Report Posted March 23, 2014 We wouldn't even be sniffing the tournament if Walt hadn't stepped up his D over the course of the season. Calling him soft is laughable. Quote

Nothing says "long time fan" like selecting a first-year arena as your profile name. And maybe that's the problem. If someone is a new fan and only started following the team in the last few months, then it's pretty easy to criticize a player that played poorly in the biggest game of the year. But for those of us that have followed this team for any length of time, we realize that Walt is a tremendous upgrade over what we've had in the past at the 4 or 5, and part of the core group of players that gave us our best season in 1.5 decades. Room for improvement? Yes. But still very much a quality player that I'm glad is on this team. Bugeaters1, a0t0w0 and Nebrasketballer 3 Quote
Huskerpapa Posted March 23, 2014 Report Posted March 23, 2014 Walt always plays hard. I have not witnessed him "pack it away." He also is playing out of position attempting to defend the post, and has worked hard on improving that part of his game. He has improved his post defense tremendously since the first third of the season. How can a 6'10 guy be playing out of position in the post? Do you want him to play the 2 guard? If you're 6'10 you have to play in the post He is not a post player. What games have you been watching? Heck, Conklin was 6'11" and would never take a sniff in the post. He was a face the basket player. Walt is not a back to the basket player, never was, but he plays the role as best as he can. Nebrasketballer 1 Quote
hhcmatt Posted March 23, 2014 Report Posted March 23, 2014 Turn it down a notch of the board personal attacks, huh. I'm trying to be on vacation here As far as Walt/any other player....once again remember we're talking about college kids here. There is a fine line between criticism and going beyond. Make sure you're not going beyond. Silverbacked1 1 Quote

TourneyBound Posted March 23, 2014 Report Posted March 23, 2014 I think pitchford has the most potential....NBA wise. Let's just hope Walt doesn't think that he needs to test those waters quite yet!!! I think he needs to continue to work on his game and not let other influences control him. I was at the game Friday and he did check out and that's why he got pulled. He was upset that no one would throw the lob to him and was getting more and more frustrated out there and not hustling back on defense. Coaches pulled him and he was pissed. Even after the game I saw the players come out and he was still upset and arguing! It was a frustrating game, let's just hope it was a fluke and something like that doesn't happen again. Quote
TheKamdyMan Posted March 23, 2014 Report Posted March 23, 2014 I really think that TP will s ick around yesterday did not help his draft status...he could have a great year next to setup a monster senior season with a Hammond's more experienced and others. He wasn't getting drafted this year unless you count the NBDL draft. He's not NBA ready. Quote
Silverbacked1 Posted March 23, 2014 Report Posted March 23, 2014 Walt is soft. All there is to it. Mentally and physically. He really needs to get his shit together cuz I can't stand watching him play. If things aren't going his way it's game over, he packs it away. And the fact that he can only shoot pisses me off. No post move, no dribbling, and can't handle pressure out on the perimeter. Okay kind of agree but way to harsh man. Besides he is not a post player never has been never will be. He us a wing. You need to see this and then it becomes easier to not get all bent out if shape about him being soft. Quote
fred1212 Posted March 23, 2014 Report Posted March 23, 2014 Walt is definitely not soft and will come back next year surprisingly strong and matured as will the others on the team. Quote

He has some areas to improve on. No doubt about it. And for us to maximize our potential, he needs to become stronger protecting the paint. But this post is a bit out of line. If he is not on our roster there is no chance in hell we made the dance this year. He was flat out cold blooded at several key moments in must win games. I don't really give a rats ass if you like watching him play or not. We would not have even been an NIT team without him this year. So I certainly liked watching him play. Unfortunately, outside shooting big men are going to have some tough games. Not a good time for one. The game was not a situation or matchup for Walt at all. Fullbacksympathy Posted March 23, 2014 Report Posted March 23, 2014 Walt has as much upside as any player we've ever had and had a great sophomore season. He showed significant improvement from start to finish. It has nothing to do with being personal. Anyone who doesn't see that just doesn't know anything about basketball. He's very special. How great he ends up is up to him. Silverbacked1 1 Quote

But apologies for going overboard. Still a little hot from the Baylor game. What I was trying to say was that having a 6'10 forward that can only shoot spot up 3s is a waste of a lot of potential. I know he can be a great player and I'm being impatient waiting for it hhcmatt and Silverbacked1 2 Quote

I'd like for him to at least be able to occasionally post up players. I know that he isn't a post player at heart, but we desperately need someone/anyone who can catch the ball on the block and get us a bucket. Quote

Shoot, I'd be satisfied if Walt could shot-fake, drive to the bucket more & draw contact at the rim... more on point, I think the high post could be a very effective location for Pitch moreso than the low post, IMHO. Yeah, he has a nice midrange game, so that would make a lot of sense. It was actually shocking to me how robotic he looks with the ball when he was billed as such a great athlete. It seems like he's a great one-step leaper and a good shooter. Smooth athlete? Not so much. I could see Petteway become a guy who posts up other guards on a regular basis as well. He has a lot of toughness for a wiry guy. AuroranHusker 1 Quote
