nuled2dance Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 Where will this team be my friends if he can really find his stroke! If he wants to save it for the final stretch I am all for it. With what Walt, Shavon and TP are bringing to the table....4-5 nice three balls from Ray each night would be huge down the stretch! Quote
unl Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 I have to believe he will get out of this slump, or at least have a couple nice games. History is on Ray's side, isn't it? I may be in the minority, but I don't count him out yet. Quote
HolyBobpilgrimage Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 Yeah as a senior I'd really like to see him step it up. He is pulling it together in all other aspects besides scoring, which is confusing. I'd like to say it could be something of a reverse reaction to his scoring-heavy performance as a junior. But I think he'll pull out of it fine, which I'm hoping is sooner than later. We need him for the tournament season! Quote
nuled2dance Posted February 24, 2014 Author Report Posted February 24, 2014 Absolutely I just sense hesitation he had that wide open one in the second half and passed it up. Just find it Wednesday night Ray! We believe in you brother! Quote
AuroranHusker Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 Other than his struggles at the three-point line, I think RayRay is actually doing a lot of things at a fairly high level for this team - I think he had 5 rebounds & 5 assists and seems to be playing pretty well defensively. It's only a matter until (T)rey buries a bunch of triples in a ultra-competitive game when they are absolutely needed! Silverbacked1 and throwback 2 Quote
colhusker Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 I have been waiting for it to come back but am being to wonder if it will this year. Quote

I did not see tonight's game, as I am traveling, but I thought Ray's overall play in the previous two games (especially MSU) was very subpar. We could certainly benefit from increased contribution from our line senior! Quote
nuled2dance Posted February 24, 2014 Author Report Posted February 24, 2014 He does nice things absolutely...his three ball will only make the others more deadly to stop Quote

He's no longer a one-trick pony! He is about as close to a one-trick pony as an effective contributor can be. I think the PSU game finally got him into double-digit free-throw attempts for the year. Without doing any comparative research, I can't imagine many other players with his minutes and that few attempts. He is a very average ball handler (as Davidson said on Thursdays call, "when you see Ray trying to dribble the ball up in traffic, you just want to say, 'STOP!!'"), and a slightly above average defender. That said, he can be a HUGE difference maker if he gets his one trick going and plays at an acceptable levels elsewhere. Quote

In the past (even this season), if Ray wasn't making threes he should not be on the court at all for lack of offensive production. But, now, he's doing a lot of things to help the team. You'll want to watch the game today to see that Ray did fairly well even though he was 0-5 from beyond the arc. And I will stand by my opinion, Ray is no longer a one-trick pony! Only wish he could have had the great coaching he's received this past 2 years the prior 3. Quote
roscoe Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 Did anyone else think TP may have passed up a possible short running jumper and passed it to Rey for a wide open 3? I thought he did and it almost felt like TP knows that Rey hitting from the outside will only make this team better. AuroranHusker and REDZONEDAN 2 Quote

Ray just smiled and ran back after that one. Quote

TP had a lane to the rim, basically got there and then decided to pass out to Ray who was wide open instead of taking the layup. As was mentioned, would've lifted the roof off. Not a bad play but might've questioned it a little if the score was closer than it was. Quote
royalfan Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 I predict he will have a game that he is going to take over, and bring us the win. I agree. But starting to lose faith just a little bit. Most of his misses are not even close to going in. We desperately need him to find it soon. He brings a dimension that nobody else provides. So huge for spacing. Allows for a lineup of Rey, Pitchford, Petteway, Shields and Rivers. A very long and good defensive club with only one player on the court to do the dirty work. I love what Parker is doing of late, but if we get down by a decent amount we need shooting. Rey needs to step up. Miles needs to figure out the best way to get him out of the slump. If I recall correctly he shot well much of the game at Illinois last year. Maybe that arena is what he needs to shake out of this. AuroranHusker 1 Quote
GATA Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 Strangely, I have noticed that the past couple of games he drained a 3 right after a whistle blew the play dead. Quote
uneblinstu Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 Strangely, I have noticed that the past couple of games he drained a 3 right after a whistle blew the play dead. did it twice on Thursday... Quote
nuled2dance Posted February 24, 2014 Author Report Posted February 24, 2014 Yep my thought and I asked unelblinstu today about it prior to the game. If he can get going with that 3 ball imagine what that would do? You have him dropping 12-15. To go along with pitch, shields, tp...... Rivers, Benny, Webster and Hawkins just do what you can do. That becomes a very lethal offensive team. No better time for him to find his stroke! Quote
Huskerpapa Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 Ray has always been a streak shooter. Even last year, while playing all those minutes and launching all those three. I have been there shaking my head like everyone else with all his misses this year...but he is not close to taking the number of shots. He could go to Illinois though, and get hot, and stay hot the remainder of the year...that is what I am hoping for. Quote
HuskerCager Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 I understand why, but I think people obsess a little too much over whether a single player is scoring or not and ignore the other things they are doing on the floor. Yes, he was 0-5 from the 3, but he also had 5 rebounds, 4 assists and no turnovers. He wasn't pouting or hanging his head the entire game. He's doing some nice things. We know he can be streaky. I'm confident his shot will start falling again before the year is over. It's a great thing that we can have Ray go 0-5 and still win by 19. Now, if we have all of our players shooting like that at the same time, then we have problems. Silverbacked1 1 Quote
colhusker Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 I will take the other things he does but if he is going to keep doing the 0 fer on his shots why does he get a pass when Parker and Rivers catch grief for shooting and hell Rivers has a nice mid-range shot. Quote
bkamler Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 Rays shot is either long or short AND left or right even in warm ups! Impossible to make simple adjustment. He needs to totally reconstruct his shot which is hard to do in season. His D and hustle will continue to earn him minutes but our offense would improve immensely if he can his threes at a 33% clip. Quote
Concrete Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 The only thing different about Ray from last year to this year is that he's getting less minutes/taking less shots. His percentages are nearly identical and his stat line probably would be too if he was getting as many minutes as last year. Ray is who he is Quote
HuskerCager Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 I realize this thread is about Ray, but personally, I'm more concerned with the way Leslee has been struggling lately. hhcmatt, AuroranHusker and HuskerActuary 3 Quote
