Alright, I'm fairly new to this board so I don't know if this topic/thread has ever been done. I'm assuming it has, but I was just thinking with Kelsey's number being retired tonight for womens basketball, who is the next player that the men will retire? Since I have only been around for not a terrible amount of years and don't remember much before Aleks Maric first year, I have no idea who it would be. My first thought would be strickland, but that's mainly because he is the oldest player I can really think who made a big impact and had solid stats. Just asking for your guy's imput.

I also like #4. Big 12 player of the year is pretty impressive

Agreed. But it seems like NBA has to be part of the equation.

Pike wasn't POTY but he lived for awhile in the NBA.  As did Hoppen.  As did Lantz.  And Lue.

The guy since Lue with the best shot of spending quality time in the NBA who could also end up being an All-league performer wears #5 currently.

I don't think the NBA should be part of it. It should be based on their contributions to the program. Now, that said, most that would be up for this sort of recognition will also likely be good enough to play at that level, but I don't think that it should necessarily play a part in whether or not they should be recognized.

Not sure how much more in common the three have, but one thing all three of them did was they were named first-team all-conference at least 2 years - Hoppen was all-Big Eight 3 times.

Not sure if that's one of the "criteria" - since WWII only 3 other players have been all-conference more than once, Whitehead, Andre Smith & Fort (3x). Fort's also #3 all time in scoring.

Of course Hoppen & Pike are 1-2 in all-time total scoring. Lantz is 14th but he only played in 75 games. All three are in the 1,000-pt club and in the Nebraska Basketball Hall of Fame of course. Hoppen is the only one of the three to be named all-American.

Doesn't seem to be much consistency in how numbers to be retired are selected ... so I'll go with #10 too.

youre all wrong, at least in terms of banner material.  The next one to retire is 0.  As in 0 NCAA tournament wins.  Thats the next one for the rafters.  I have a feeling that a player from that team will one day have a banner or hall of fame induction ceremony.

Whoever leads us to a strong NCAA tournament team will be the next number up in the rafters.  That should be one of our number one recruiting tools.  Come to Nebraska, take us to the promised land, and you will be hanging in the rafter!
