Hmm, they have Morrow outside the top 100 and a three star recruit.

Also, a question.  Regarding the category of "interest."  Does that refer to the school's interest in said player, or is it the player's interest in said school?

Player-to-school, I believe.

They have Patton listed as "NE POS Rank" as 2...which, so far as I can tell, means Nebraska Position Ranking.

Am I reading that incorrectly?

If not, who do they have ranked ahead of him, because there aren't any other Nebraskans listed ahead of him I saw.

That's odd isn't it?

As far as I can tell it's just a mistake.

He's interesting, really a different skill set from anybody around here in a long time, if ever. Better shot blocker than Akoy, terrific rebounder, can dribble and shoot. He'll get pushed around a lot in college for a while but will be interesting to see what kind of player he becomes. Plus, supposedly he's still growing. I know, I know, he's at Creighton, but I like to see the local kids do well.

Guess we'll find out if/when Patton becomes that 5-star in real life, eastern Omaha is probably pretty excited about their home-grown talent. It's up to Justin & the coaching staff to uncover his talent in Div. 1 basketball.

If you go back in this thread you will see I took some heat for my praise of Patton. Although I didn't always like the way he played this year I still wish Nebraska would have gotten in on him. I agree with scout that his potential is high and will stand by my statements that he could have more success than Akoy in college.

Maybe they have something screwy with their site. OWH says Patton is the second highest rated Big East kid.

Here is a set of meaningless but ironic and slightly-humorous stats from Saturday's Metro Basketball Coaches Association Boy's All-Star Game, which the South All-Stars won 119-105:
A Division-1 walkon (Elkhorn South's Johnny Trueblood--20 points) out scored a Division-1 scholarship and Rivals Four-Star / top-45 (Omaha North's Justin Patton--15 points), as did the no-Division-1 connection MVP of the All-Star game (Roncalli's Mohammed Elradi--20 points).
The Division-1 walkon and the MVP both played on the winning South team. The Rivals Four-Star / top-45 played on the losing North team.
Go figure.

Some stuff I said many moons ago in this very thread:

I actually think this [Khyri Thomas] kid is a great get for [Creighton].  Perhaps the best player in your class and that includes Patton.  I watched some film on him.  I love his size.  He's a very well built player for his size, the kind who can take a beating.  And probably deliver one as well.  But he's a pretty skilled kid, too, and fairly athletic.

I've been watching a little bit on the BJU and saw the continuing pursuit of him and I was hoping you guys would land him.  I think he'll be the hidden gem of your class.

Having said that, I'm still skeptical about a guy [Justin Patton] jumping THAT far, all the way from no D1 attention whatsoever to being in the top 50 for both Rivals and Scout.  We've seen kids make big jumps before only to fall back a ways.  Leon Gilmore was one such player from last year.  But Leon was at least getting D1 attention before his leap into the Rivals 150.  It'll be interesting to see what he does during his senior year.  A top 50 player should absolutely dominate Nebraska HS ball.

It doesn't happen often, but I'm feeling pretty darn smart about now.

Y'all don't have to go look, but over on the Bluejay Underground, they're talking about Khyri Thomas being the gem of their recruiting class and maybe even starting for them as a true freshman.  He evidently really had a strong showing in Italy.

However, Justin Patton, not so much.  Not only are they not talking about him starting, some are suggesting he should redshirt and that he's not ready.  Some are even suggesting he might be (gasp) a top 50 "bust."

I think it's too early to call Patton a bust.  He has a lot of developing to do but he has some nice ability and, with some caloric intake and hard work in the weight room, he could be a very good player for them down the road.  But that's still not worthy of a top 50 rating.  He clearly was not worthy of being a top 50 recruit.

Thomas is also not a top 50 recruit, but he's shown himself well in that trip to Italy Creighton took.  Good for him, too.  Considering where he was with recruiting and the offers he held, to hear people talk about him being a potential starter on this Creighton team has to feel like a real feather in his cap.  And in mine for having gone out on a limb and called it before he went and showed it.  :D

P.S.  I wasn't the only one who said Thomas would be good and who expressed skepticism about Patton.  There were others as well and credit belongs to them, too.

Ratings are largely based on physical tools. Patton has them, plus he can shoot a little and handle the ball. He's competing for time against two experienced big men, plus they've got another 6-10 guy at 4 who can play some post. Patton's skinny and inexperienced and it wouldn't be surprising if he redshirted. Does that make him a bust? I dunno. Andrew White could be considered a ratings bust, I guess. Or maybe it just takes a while for some guys.

So Norm, do you see any hidden gems like Thomas in state this year? I've seen a few kids getting some looks but nobody as of right now who looks to be serious targets for Nebraska or Creighton right now. Thomas and Thurmann didn't get many looks but Thomas is looking pretty solid now by all accounts. I am not super dialed in to the Nebraska prep hoops scene but I do like when local kids get a shot at Division one ball.

White played behind two guys that went top 5 in the draft. Let's see what he can do when he doesn't have star players in front of him.

Hard to get a lot of minutes behind a NBA ROY the same size as you playing the same position. Those guys ranked in the 35-65 range honestly have it worst if they choose to go to a blueblood IMO. Recruits within that range will get a lot of legit blueblood attention but they find themselves permanently stuck behind a top 10 or top 20 dude who plays the same position. Problem with AWIII is he never showed Bill Self anything in practice to convince him he deserved those minutes. A lot of factors come into play for playing time, obviously, and its good to see him get a legit chance at being an impact player in a power conference

Posted

Actually AW-III looked good in practice at KU as told by Doc Sadler after he left KU for the S. Miss gig. Doc mentioned that AW-III didn't perform that well in the little game action he saw so Self moved on. This past year KU could have used AW-III, though.

Big difference at KU is there's another four-star or five-star that will take over those minutes rather easily.... Nebraska & many, many other programs will have a fairly long leash with a guy with potential.

I agree. My point was that ratings aren't infallible and it's early to suggest Patton is a bust. fwiw, I like the local kids a lot and still think Thurman was a steal for UNO.

Was Thurman the one that had issues with grades that scared folks off?
