Lee Barfknect talks about why Serg isn't ready yet.

OWH

Miles gave a very diplomatic answer to explain why Vooch isn't playing. What he didn't say is that Vooch will never have the requisite quickness to play B1G basketball.

This running off talk is dumb unless Miles has a 4* or 5* big man to replace.  Otherwise you just have another scholarship player sitting bench but this time he wouldn't have the experience under Miles.  Not every scholarship player will be getting playing time.

Miles is dumb for not playing Vooch more.  His big men now can't move their feet.  Set Vooch in zone where he doesn't have to move too much and see what happens.  See if his size throws off the other team for a few minutes.

Miles roster management bugs me.  Vooch should have redshirted.  Hawkins should have redshirted.

Doesn't need to be a 4 or 5 star recruit...id love another Leslee Smith type player on this team. It's clear by Miles answered to this question that Vooch will probably never play here. If we can fin another big body who can play 15-20 minutes a game then Vooch should go.

Some of you guys are going to fight for SV til the bitter end, aren't you.  It is obvious the kid is nowhere near a DI talent.  The little bit we've seen of him makes this extremely obvious, he is clumsy, he is weak, he is not explosive, and quite frankly just not good enoug.  He will not play.  Ever.  Forget about him and move on.

Here's the part I dont get tho---

Miles had to realize this last year, rite?

So why not show him the door after last season. What was possibly gained by keeping him round this year?

That's why I don't think recruiting is going very well.

We didn't fill our scholarship quota this year anyway, so there was no harm in him staying this year, especially if Serj wanted to.

Dont know about that. You save the last scholly to try and get the big recruit. If you got two schollys, you can still do that plus you can grab a guy that can at least see some minutes. Maybe get a player with limited scoring skills but is a good rebounder or something.

Serj wasnt ever gonna play. Miles new that. He only played a few minutes last year and is gonna only play a few minutes this year. Hes not gonna wake up one day and suddenly be quicker. Why tie up the scholly like that? You really want me to believe you cant find nobody who can play at all? Cmon man.

I got no problems with a cat who is a project. But a project is a guy who can play, but needs to add weight and work on some skill developement. That aint Serj. Serj's problem isnt gettin fixed by adding lbs or working on his shot. He just isnt D1. Nothing wrong with that -lotsa cats have to play d2 or lower. By keeping him for another year, you do a disservice to the kid by using up a year of eligibility when you know he aint gonna finish with you. You also do the team a disservice because you didnt get somebody who can ball. You think the other guys dont know Serj aint D1? Cmon man

By the time Miles realised that it was to late to get another player.  Giving Serg the  benefit of the doubt that he may improve enough this summer.  We had the whole summer to continue to try and improve.  We didnt need a world beater, but did need someone to give us some minutes.  Now that we see he can't do that we can conclude it probably will never happen.

It was possible for someone to improve enough in a summer to give us a few minutes and then continue to improve.  It is not like it was impossible that Serg was never going to develop into a valuable role player.  We could not conclude that after 1 year, but now we probably can after two.

And I know that people complain that he should have redshirted last year, but I think it was right of Miles to not.  Miles knew he was never going to be an all star, so why tie up a Schollie for 5 years?  If he would have redshirted last year, and this year played minimal minutes... he still probably would have been given another year to prove himself.  That would of tied up the schollie for 3 years.

Totally agree! I don't get the fascination with Vooch by some on here. The small amounts he's been in games have been against scrubs from other teams and he still looks slow and awkward. Say what you want about Pitchford and Smith but they are both light years ahead of Vooch in terms of mobility and strength. The only good thing about putting Vooch in right now is he'd get posterized by our opponents in the BIG and would be a near lock for sports center top 10 every game!

With as much zone as we're playing now, I don't understand why Miles doesn't put him in the middle of it.

Because you have to move your feet to play

Zone defense as well. You are simply playing m-4-m in your zone.

I always tell my players, as my coach told me... that its tougher to play zone than it is man.

Many people belive zone is an easy defense to teach and it is not.  You have to know your job and be able to guard your "zone"  you still have to play defense in a zone.

But like any defense, your talking about when its played correctly

I hate to plus 1 this, but there's certainly some logic to what you say.  We don't have a lot of vacancy and if we thought we had better options than a guy who sits every game and rarely plays ...

I have to assume Miles knew he wasn't giving out the 13th anyways so the 12th schollie didn't matter as much.

My best guess is the APR was the biggest reason to make sure a couple transfers won't hurt their numbers this year.

Do we settle for a third or fourth tier recruit or hold out for only our top two tiers?  Meaning, if we do not get the guy we want, perhaps we take the next guy on our list, but do you drop down to your third or fourth or beyond in order to fill the roster.  I think not.

That's what Jucos and graduates are for.

Between the open spot and Serg's spot, we've had two scholarship spots sitting there for two years that we haven't had any production out of.  One because we didn't fill it and the other because it's filled by a player that the coach never inserts into games.  And that player might not play because of his lack of ability but, still, he occupies a roster spot that we're getting nothing out of.

That's over 15% of your roster for two years running.

And as of November 2013, the fall signing period during which most on here would acknowledge the best players sign, we still had Serg's spot and an open spot to offer and didn't fill them.  The only one we got was basically someone to fill Gallegos' spot.

We could have over-signed by 1.  If, as some on here suggest, Miles already knew Serg was not going to pan out, then he could have signed two more players in November.

I hate to say this but this is why what Central said previously holds a little water.  If recruiting was going well, we'd be sitting on at least two signed LOIs right now, wouldn't we?  Maybe 3?

I don't like the sounds of what I'm saying.  I really don't like the sounds of what I'm saying.

I think the recruiting deal is going to take more time than most of  us - Miles included - thought.  They need to get lucky and land an absolute stud, whether it be a surprise, diamond in the rough, or just steal him from the blue bloods, in the next two years while they have pieces like Petteway, Smith, etc. to get some momentum.
