This statement from Whittington appears to have a Tim Miles' sense-of-class written all over it:

"I'd like to thank Georgetown. I really appreciate everything they did for me -- both the coaching staff and the players," Whittington said, "but now it's time for me to move to another stage in my life."

I hope he can overcome whatever problem he was dismissed for.  That statement shows maturity.

He hasn't played a game this season, correct?  Is there any way he would be eligible at the start of next season?

Tried to dig up some info on a Georgetown board.  One poster said that Otto Porter was option 1 and Greg was 1A.  Another post said they both looked like candidates for the NBA draft...that's definitely exciting.

It sounds like since he was dismissed six games into the season, he would have to sit out the first six games next year.

I'm confused.  So can he transfer and start playing for NU in January (if we get him) or does he have to sit out 2nd semester and would just have 1 year of eligibility left and would play next season for us?

No expert on the NCAA manual here, but as I understand it, he'd not be eligible until 2nd semester of the 2014-15 season, barring some odd NCAA ruling, and have 1 1/2 years of eligibility remaining.

He played the 2011-12 season at GU (frosh) and 13 of 32 games in the 2012-13 season at GU (soph) before becoming academically ineligible. Because he's still at GU now (jr), 2013-14 would be considered his redshirt year, even if he enrolls 2nd semester at NU or wherever. Then 2nd semester he'd sit out as a transfer while redshirting.

That would make him a r-jr for 2014-15. But he'd have to sit out first semester as a transfer and wouldn't be able to play in games until first semester ends, which should be around Dec. 19 next year. So he then could play the second semester of 2014-15 as a r-jr and have 2015-16 as a r-sr.

Now where it gets tricky is the knee injury. He played in just over 40% of GU's games as a soph before the academic issues, so he's not eligible for a standard redshirt that year. But because it sounds as if his knee injury would have made him unable to play for GU this season, regardless of why he was dismissed from the team, it's possible that the NCAA would consider granting him a 6th year (2016-17). More than likely though he'd only be at his new school for 1 1/2 years.

I don't believe there's any way he could play at NU or wherever he ends up before Dec.19, 2014, unless there's some odd medical hardship ruling that the NCAA would give him. Or if he could convince the NCAA of some sort of family hardship that forced him to leave GU, but that sounds doubtful. With a special NCAA ruling, he may be eligible for the entire 2014-15 season as a r-jr. However, I'd be pretty surprised if the NCAA was willing to grant a waiver to someone who was declared academically ineligible at his previous school.

Someone please correct any/all of that info as I'm sure something is incorrect.  ;)

He played a lot of minutes as a soph at GU before the injury, interesting numbers - only game vs a Big Ten team: 12 pts, 6 boards in 41 minutes in OT loss vs Indiana last year

I believe that is correct from what I understand too.

His reason for sitting out his sophomore year was academic probation, btw

Worst case scenario would be 1.5 years as described above.  Anything more would be Gibblet Gravy.

Right, thanks - edited it to make it more clear

Since the injury happened in June, I'd have to think he's still rehabbing, although I haven't found any info on the severity, other than it's an ACL

he said hes ahead of schedule in the article but needs to rehab and hes been told how great NU's athletic medicine and training dept is with all the new research stuff in east stadium that can get him back in shape to play again.

Here is an excerpt from Robin's article.

"Regardless of if he gets the medical redshirt or not, he said he would likely have to sit out the first six games of next season either way, which is how many games he was on Georgetown's roster before his dismissal. Though he was suspended last year because of academics, Whittington said his academic situation was not a major concern moving forward."

Only penalizing him in 2014-15 for the same number of games he was on the G'town roster for 2013-14 would seem like a fair penalty - hopefully that's what the NCAA does!

NU's trip to the Hawaii tournament is near Christmas next year I believe, so the non-con schedule next year may have more of the 200+ RPI games at the front and the tougher games at the back, which also would be beneficial in this case.

I wonder if the NCAA would feel any pressure to make him eligible immediately considering they did so with the transfer of Joshua Smith.  Even though he played parts of three seasons at UCLA they granted him (immediate) eligibility of two full seasons at, wait for it, Georgetown.

But, who am I kidding, the next time the NCAA shows any consistency will be the first.

Yeah. He might have just gotten caught up in the moment while on his visit.

Robin Washut thinks he will still take his visit to Nebraska.

That means that the staff needs to make sure it's for a big game, so the atmosphere is electric.

Rutgers played UNCG this weekend. I can't imagine that crowd was very impressive.

I would think that the atmosphere at Pinnacle Bank Arena for the games vs Michigan, Ohio St, Minnesota, Indiana, Illinois, Purdue, and Wisconsin would all be more impressive than Rutgers vs UNCG...
