The foul issue is, apparently, widespread:

GoodmanESPN

One scrimmage this morning had 61 fouls and 86 free throws, another had 54 fouls and 68 free throws.

Hearing this over & over already from coaches following "secret scrimmages." Tons of fouls called. Expect a lot more ZONE defense this year.

This just shows how much the players today play D with their hands and not their feet.  I wouldn't think it would take too much for the players to adjust to the way the game is going to be called.  Keep your hands off!

There can and will be adjustments.  The issue to me (again) is the consistancy of the calls.  If Louisville plays and they don't call the fouls, then when Ohio State plays and they do call the fouls, then we have a problem...a huge problem.

So, if you are calling them now Mr. Adams, please dear lord, countinue to call them so these student athletes know.

I kinda figured this would happen.  They'll call it super tight to start the year and it will be incumbent upon the players to adjust.  Kids want to stay on the floor.  They'll figure it out or they won't be on the floor.

Absolutely.  There will be some variance.  That's just going to be part of the deal and I'd imagine it will take a while for officials to level out, too.  Get things figured out by conference play and it should be fine.

Is this the type of game fans will want to see though?

Right out of the gate, we're going to have some ugly basketball.  Brace for it.  Once the players adjust, things will open up and it will be much more appealing, I think.

Pitchford didn't play right?

Also, it's a bad sign when you are criticizing the officials before the season even starts.

From what we were hearing prior to today, Pitch wasnt going to play a lot if any.  No word on if he did or not.  If he did not, Vooch would of gotten quite a few mins I would presume as would of everyone that will be playing at all this year.  I will hold off until FGC to say whether we will see some big growing pains or not.

I think we, as fans, will love the brand of basketball played in the end.  As long as the NCAA and the conferences remain vigilant in holding the refs accountable to the new standards, the game will ultimately morph back into what it was originally designed to be .  It was never intended to be as physical as it's become.  It should be a game of flow and movement, and should be played and executed with anticipation and adjustment, rather than force and leverage.

With player evolution to a point where even the 18 and 19 year old kids are long, strong, and athletic, the offensive angles and lanes are constricted far more than when I played, based strictly on the physical attributes of the players.  The way the game was being called, allowing defenses to redirect offenses consistently, there were points where it was almost impossible to get any look at the basket that wasn't 22 feet and out.  That's NOT basketball.

I agree with other members above who are saying the players will figure it out, and will ultimately learn to play defense the right way.  Teams like Miles has typically put on the floor throughout his career, will excel and thrive in an environment like that, I think.  Precision offense and disciplined execution will be rewarded far more than the standard fare isolation and out-athlete-the-opponent type will.

All of this is exciting to me, and I believe should be for Nebraska fans in general.  We're well-suited to take advantage of this because we've got pretty skilled players, and it will serve to make the games more enjoyable to watch - if not immediately, at least eventually.  GBR!!

The sources said Nebraska, with seven scholarship players who haven’t competed together in a game yet, struggled with shot selection, turnovers and defensive errors. Free-throw shooting also was about 50 percent.

Other than perhaps the free-throw shooting part of this, none of it should come as a surprise.   The surprise would have been if a group this inexperienced did not struggle in these areas.  Patience still required.

Agreed.  Expect the same shaky start of last year with better personnel this year but our pre-conference schedule being more difficult faster and overall.
