The Army we have

  1. 1. How would we fare this year with the Army we presently have?

    • Talley and Ubel were undervalued assets. Afraid we possibly aren't as good.
      2
    • We'll be deeper but far less experienced. Probably a push. We'll be about as good.

    • Our new players more than offset what we lost, plus the B1G will be down. We'll be a little better.

    • We'll be much deeper, much more athletic, and much more talented. With a down B1G, we'll be MUCH better.

There's a line from Donald Rumsfeld (of all people) that I always liked:  "You go to war with the Army you have, not the Army you wish you had."  Seems like it could apply in all kinds of different contexts.  Today, it applies to Husker basketball.

We might not have the Army we wish we had, but if we went into battle with the roster as it would presently be composed, how do we do this coming season?  Are we a better team?  About the same?  Possibly not as good?

Also, I don't know that I'd assume the league wil be "down".  It will still be very strong, but it won't be as strong as it was last year, but it should stil be very very good.  If below last year is considered "down", then ok, but it's still going to be one of the stronger leagues in the country, I think.

I think it'd be a mistake not to use the last scholarship unless there is just absolutely nobody worth getting.

Why wouldn't you at least bring in a grad transfer? wouldn't even have to be a big man. Just bring in another body for practice instead of not using the scholarship at all.

The Menke's vote no to that plan!!! B)

I spoke with Trevor's dad last week.  Asked him how Trevor likes "the new guy" and he shrugged and said "not bad."

I bet that answer would be a bit more positive if Trevor were to keep his schollie for another year.

I will go on record a second time this week and state that my expectation is that we make it at least to the NIT.  That would meet my expectation for this upcoming season.  My expectations will be exceeded if we make the NCAA tournament.

If we don't add anyone else....seems like a whiff on our part.

Given they have tried so hard to add another I would agree.

I get this thought, but they are adding seven new players to the mix next season.  That's a ton as it is.  If they don't fill this spot, it's not the end of the world.

GET A RECRUITER!!!!!!! Tim Miles has shown he CAN'T recruit big men (look on how many we lost out on and to crappy teams)

I appreciate the art of pot-stirring.  When done correctly, it can be very entertaining.

You really suck at it.

There's a fine line between stirring the pot and being a troll.  KearneyMan ain't nowhere near that line.

I don't think it would be the end of the world, they have tried to hard to believe they are ok with leaving it open.

This could be rephrased, but he has a point... sort of.

Why are we taking so long to hire Director of operations? We've almost wasted a whole year without one. How would we not benefit from having an AAU coach in that position?

It is also taking a fair amount of time for us to find another assistant. I don't think Miles can do it all by himself.

Miles struggled to recruit big men at CSU. His best was Colton Iverson who came in as a senior transfer.

We could benefit from hiring someone that is going to land us a legit big man.

Well, we have a Director of Operations.  Never been without one.  Chin was a Director of player development or something like that and he said the NCAA was going to look at how that role could be filled across the board and was going to wait until that decision was made before moving forward on that.

it is still an open position that could be of some kind of benefit, and we are wasting it.

I guess my hope is they've tried too hard to give it to a player they don't really want.

If a transfer (1-yr grad or 2-3 yr undergrad) happens that will generally upgrade the talent on the roster in the coming season(s), then that's a positive development. Otherwise, a late add could wind up being more of a crap-shoot than a well-positioned move.

Of course, but I don't see them taking a player just to take a player, at least I hope I don't see that happen.

I hope not either... guess I've had it burned into my memory banks by some of that short-sighted mind-set in the Barry/Doc years: taking a guy who "may" be useful seems like a distinct possibility at a school that's never been much of a "hoops factory".

I will have more faith in TM's ability to orchestrate this recruiting thing

I believe we will have a big man next year although virtually none of us currently would recognize his name.

While we have missed on some that we would have loved to corral....(if we could have snagged JU this would not have been the fall back plan.)    this is not yet the equivalent of bar closing time when they are kicking guys out the door.

If I were a betting man (and I am)...I would wager a few bucks on signing a yet to be identified graduate (immediately eligible) player...

This would fill an immediate need while leaving 2 scholarships open next year...

I understand  we may be taking this swing and yet we could miss...but I trust TM has a plan in action.

Many transfers are hidden from view until they are gone from their school  and declared to another. That is who we get....(I believe)

Then, next year, after we put up somewhere near a 20 win season ...we may convince the next level of players that NU should/would/could be a good choice for the future.

The poll is actually a pretty tough question.  There are the two obvious factors to consider:  players on the roster (talent) and the strength of the B1G.

Regarding the team we'll have next year, we will obviously be more talented than last season.  We have a nice looking group of newcomers, and Shields and Gallegos have a year under Miles' tutelage so they will provide the veteran presence.  It is just so hard to determine how quickly a large group of newcomers will gel.  Since Biggs, Pitchford and Petteway were here last season, maybe it won't take as long for those guys.  Remains to be seen how quickly we click.  I feel pretty good about Miles being the guy to get these guys on the same page, though.  The only concern for me is whether we'll be able to defend the post.  Ubel did a nice job down there, and Andre had his moments.

The top half of the conference just can't be as tough as last year with the number of key guys declaring early for the NBA draft.  However, the bottom half of the league should be much better.  Frazier is back at PSU, Northwestern gets Drew Crawford back, we should be better, a very young Purdue team is a year older (and the same goes for Iowa).  I think we'll be slugging it out in the middle of the pack, which will be a mess.  I wouldn't bet against Tim Miles in that situation; the guy can flat out coach.
