Article from Sam McKewon speculating on the split

They might do the whole geography thing.

EAST
Maryland
Michigan
Michigan State
Ohio State
Penn State
Rutgers
Purdue or Indiana

WEST
Illinois
Iowa
Minnesota
Nebraska
Northwestern
Wisconsin
Purdue or Indiana

I'm not sure if this effects basketball at all.
Currently we don't play teams from the Legends and Leaders twice.

" Nebraska’s current coaching ties will always help in landing a player or two from Ohio. But Illinois needs to be a secondary pipeline —"

I'm glad someone is supporting points made on the old HHC board. Just look through the Nebraska thousand-point club and note all the Illinois players (5/25) second after Indiana (6/25)

I was just getting used to the idea of NU-Michigan as being the highlight of the season. Loved having MSU, since we kind of own them.

The good side is that this will probably cement what should be a potential 3-way rivalry with Iowa and Wiscy for some time. Now we have to hold up our end and start beating the bloody badgers. Or is that beating the badgers bloody? I'm good either way.

I don't mind the east/west split, strength between divisions is cyclical, when the Big 12 was formed everyone was worried that the south division was weaker than the north, and we all know how dominate the south turned out to be before the conference degraded.  Same can be said about the SEC the east in the 1990s/early 2000s was tougher, now it's the West who has all the elite teams.

The split will allow for rivalries to form, and as a fan the next best thing to winning a national championship is having bragging rights over another fan base.  It will also allow for our big red army to invade any football away game which is a understated advantage (we probably don't win the Northwestern game if half the stadium isn't red).

It will be interesting to see if they use the split for olympic sports as well.  I know Coach Cook has mentioned that the volleyball scheduling needs to be done on geography and not strength of schedule balance, to allow the conference to be fresher for post-season, and let the student-athletes, actually be students for once.

For basketball, it will allow everyone in the conference to know which team plays which teams, knowing they play and home and home with opposing teams in their division, and once with teams in the opposite division.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out this summer, and if it is indeed football only.  I'd rather have everything based on competitive balance, but I do see the reasoning to do the east/west divisions, and won't have any complaints once it's completed.

Maybe East will be called Big Ten with the big time teams that run the conference and the West the little Ten.

Most players will probably want to play in the east divison like they did in the Big 12 South.....might not be good for a conference, but most should have seen this.

Terrible move.

We've been here before...it was called the Big 12 North

Yep

Totally agree as it would be a joke if they did this.  Nothing like taking the league divisions and making one of them extremely weaker than the other.  it was the exact same in the big 12 and even more sad was we couldn't even win the North most years.  I sure hope they make it more evenly competitive and not worry about geography.

Except the north was the stronger division when they split them up.  The south stepped it's game up.  If this is how the league gets split, the west will have to do the same.  NU didn't struggle because their division was weak, it was because they couldn't keep their house in order.

Splitting them up by geography is a reasonable solution, especially as the conference has grown as far east and west as it has, it's up to the rest of the teams in the division to rise to the challenge.

Agree. Wisconsin and Nebraska should compare favorably to Michigan and Ohio State. Michigan was everybody's favorite at the start of the season but they weren't exactly a powerhouse all year. Michigan State is like Iowa, contending every 3-4 years. Penn State isn't going to be a power for a while. The rest are fair to bad. I don't think the balance is that off. If it winds up in five years that there is a marked difference they will reconsider it, especially when we add 15-16.

For once this is a plan that actually considers travel for athletes and fans. Hopefully it carries over to other sports.

Please name it East/West and not some self- aggrandizing bunch of crap.

We could go with Tagi and Pagong, the tribe names from the first season of Survivor.

Steak and Lobster

I think what you are going for is "Surf and Turf" :)

Silverbacked that reminds me, I took vacation last summer to Tofte, MN and all they had to drink up there was that Grain Belt crap.  Tastes like molasses, all bitter and sweet.
