Wow.  That came out of the blue.  Good for him . . . and good for us.  Some excerpts from the article:

"Wagner announced today he accepted a preferred walk-on offer at NCAA Division I Nebraska next season . . . 'I’m pretty excited,' said Wagner, who averaged 23.8 points per game this season with the Red Hawks. 'Last spring, I contacted them and told them I would be interested in walking on.'  Wagner, a 3.95 student, will also receive an academic scholarship from the university."

"'We’re really excited,' said Red Hawks coach Mark Wagner, who is also Tim’s father. 'I think the one thing that Tim can bring to any team is the fact that he can shoot the ball so well.'"

We've had worse walk ons.

Wasn't Verlander an acedemic walkon?  He was alright.  Hope our roster is good enough in the future that we don't have to rely on him to contribute.

Or he develops into a solid contributor.  Does anyone realize the #1 team in the nation (Gonzaga) starts a walkon?  Thats on a roster that's loaded with talent.  Few is one hell of a coach.

Yep. His name was Velander (or Verlander according to Doc) and he did have an academic scholarship.

Velander turned out to be a pretty good player.  Here's a blurb from a Big 12 article:

"Paul Velander . . . has carved out a niche for himself not only as the

nation’s top 3-pointer shooter, hitting 50 percent of his shots from behind the

arc, but also as a force defensively taking 14 charges this season."

Why do we need a walk on guard again? Don't we have 2 already?

I mean every walk on that WANTS to be here I will welcome if they can prove they have what it takes.  May not be much his first or second year.  But when you have been here 3 or 4 years, you get better.  Could end up being one of those situation players that goes in when we need some shooters on the floor.  One of those players that will give you a good hard 5 to 10 mins a game when others need breaks or are in foul trouble.

I get that we are/will be guard heavy, but like the top 8 to 9 pushing eachother for playing time, hope the walkons and bottom of the group can challenge eachother enough to be the best role players they can be.

From the video, I take that he is a great shooter, who can drive every now and then, and will be a player that we can put in if anyone ever runs a zone against us.

He is slower, and does not appear to be a great athlete, but foot speed can be improved.

Again, I'll take him esp if he doesn't cost us a schollie.  But I doubt he's going to be able to get that shot off in the Big10.  His release is far from lightning quick.   He has a very odd stroke for a 6'3" kid.  He has a windup kind of like girls & jr high kids do when they aren't strong enough to get the ball to the rim.

Also guessing he's not a legit 6'3".

I don't think Norm is going to like that shooting form.

My thoughts exactly.  A little slow on the windup and pretty low on the release.  But on the other hand, his shots appear to go inside the hoop with a strong degree of regularity!

But watch his feet. He rhythm steps as the ball is arriving. So even if his release appears a little slow to you, half his shot is over before he even catches the ball. That speeds things up. I don't mean to quibble, but his release seems high enough to me, my issue is dipping the ball on the catch which does definitely slow down the release. Eliminate the dip and I think his shot will be off just fine.

It might be a technicality, but I don't believe he had an academic scholarship.  His dad was a professor (still is, I believe) and they covered his school that way.

Preferred Division I walkon = Division II/NAIA Walk-On, possibly a lower tier Div I schollie.

If he can be on the court without being a defensive liability, he has the potential to be a role player, especially if we have guys on the team that can open up stand and shoot 3pt specialists.

I would love to hear the connection between Wagner and whomever recruited him.  My guess is that along with the high grade point average he's probably a highly competitive kid.  These are the kind of guys you pull into your program instead of holding tryouts on campus.

Maybe, still looks slow to me, but I'll trust your judgment.  Think if he can redshirt, get a year of coaching and quicken it up a bit, he might be a nice little weapon to have.

Beranek probably would been a guy like this if he hadn't gone to UNK out of high school.

That's a good recent example though Velander seems like a more apt comparison considering the grades and  3pt ability.
