Southern (4-7) vs. Nebraska (5-6) Game Thread

Just some ramdom thoughts from our last two games, not right or wrong.

 

I think we play to the level of the team we are playing, and always have.

 

Slump against teams we should be killing, hang with the teams we have no business hanging with.

 

Also 3 or 4 of the 3's made by Southern had no business going in.  Bank shot from the wing then hits rim then back board then rim and goes in.

Twice at the end of a shot clock they threw the ball up to the rim, flat footed and it goes in.

 

While we are having greta looks that rim out.

 

Also I thought last night was refed better than the game on Sunday.  Not saying we lost because of it, but there was no flow to Sundays game on either end.  Go down shoot, whistle,  Last night both teams even had runs because they got to go up and down the court a few times before the whistle.

 

And lastly, just a question and I think we talked about this last year.  Are the Addidas basketballs any good?  Watch and see how many times we just fumble away the ball, actually both teams do.  Are they not as good as others, I know they make a okay soccerball but got in trouble a couple of World Cups ago for having crappy balls.

They are 4-8 with some bad losses to a D2 school, 3-8 Tulane amongst others.   They are not good.

 

They might be better than Sacramento St, but let's stop painting them as a quality opponent or a win that you can hang your hat on.   As I said and you as well pointed out, the fact that its a close game is a bigger testament to us not being where we should than it is about them being a good program

Miles said after the game that Jeriah was playing the 4.  He still has concerns about his ability to defend but said he does have the ability to fill it up when he gets hot.  The concern is whether he can play defense effectively against the 4's in the BIG.  I think we are going to love Jeriah before he's done here but he is a WIP on defense and will have nights where he is off with his shot too.

This has been going on for years, if not a decade. I don't know what it comes down to. Is it lack of confidence? Is it just going through the motions? Is it trying to protect a lead? Is it letting the opponent take charge of the tempo of the game?

I don't think he'll have ever the quickness to score on or guard at the 3.  The more I think about him bulking up and playing the 4, the more I like it.  He could really develop into a matchup nightmare at that spot offensively.  He's very skilled with the ball against opposing bigs--and that's how he's used to playing from high school.

I don't know if he has the quickness to guard the 3 at the college level or not, time will tell.  I do know he went toe to toe with Michael Porter JR in the state finals last year and put up better numbers than Porter who is considered the #2 recruit nation wide this year.

Personally want to see a combo of Taylor/Roby/Gill at the 3.  Have Horne and Roby take the 4 with Ed and Jordy at the 5.   Occasionally using ed at the 4 alongside Jordy.   I love Jacobson's efforts, but with the lack of shooters on this team, we simply need more than 5 points a game from someone who plays 30 minutes.   He needs to be backed down.

I don't see Gill as a 3 at all, but I agree with the rest of what you're thinking.

I don't think he's a true 3....but I think he's one of the more talented guys we have and is a guy capable of knocking down 2-3 3's in a game.   Really could almost play Tai at the 3 and Gill at 2.

Those were contested threes they were hitting at nearly a 50% rate.  They took some deep looks and they made some tough shots, plus they just plain got lucky on a few, as you described.  None luckier than the buzzer beater to end the first half.

I think last night they were a lot better than their record.  As Silverbacked said above (and I added on to) they were knocking down contested 3s at a pretty high rate (46.7%).

 

Coming into the game with us, they were only shooting 32.6% from 3 for the season and last night they hit almost 47%.  We weren't giving them easy looks.  And it wasn't just 3s either.  They just were on, especially that little point guard who was banking in flip shots like Mo Watson.  He came in averaging 35.6% from the floor and last night -- again, not getting easy looks -- he goes 7 of 12 for 58.3% shooting.

 

So, yeah, Southern isn't good, but last night they played better than their record.

I respectfully disagree that Jacobson needs less minutes.  He is an excellent passer, he defends, he boxes out and he moves the ball. He is struggling a bit on the offensive end, but then again, isn't the majority of the team?  If we bench everyone trying to find their offensive identity, we may not be able to put five players on the court.

I think there is a spot for him in the rotation.   Just not at the rate he's been getting minutes.   Scoring points is our issue and right now he's a guy that simply doesn't score very much in relationship to how much he plays.   And he never has been.   Unless we want more of the same, we'll need to sacrifice some defense for some offense.

Jacobson might be my biggest disappointment so far.  He's been terrible offensively (even when he's not shooting threes).

 

He's not been a particularly good defender that I've seen (I have not watched every game). He's too slow to guard smaller guys, and too short to guard bigger guys (even with his added muscle).  He did have a nice block in transition the other day, though.

 

He does box out well, generally, which is good, and I don't know enough about his passing abilities to consider him excellent in this capacity (though I'm not sure there's a guy on our squad right now I'd grade to be excellent in passing the ball, but I'm also not sure what scale we'd be grading this on). I suppose he's a better passer than Ed, who rarely ever passes.

 

If Jake's minutes were cut, I wouldn't complain.

 

It saddens me that I see Jake in this manner.  I had high hopes for him this year (obviously too high).

I tend to believe that you currently have four players who should split the 80 combined minutes at the PF and Post positions.  Jordy, Ed, MJ and Jeriah.  These four should get 15 to 25 minutes a piece depending on match ups, effort, execution and results.  Sure Isaiah could play some PF, but he seems more comfortable at the wing.  By the way, did you hear Coach Miles in his post game radio interview talking about the physical practice and Isaiah's issues?  Not saying Isaiah can't play physically in the paint, but he currently appears to be more comfortable playing a finesse game.

We must be watching a different player.  But I am sure that he is only getting minutes because he has some secret about the coaches.  If they sit him, then the secret will get out.  Jokes aside, there are multiple reasons why he is getting the minutes he is receiving.  He continues to earn them.

Dude works hard, for sure.  And I like him.

 

He's just disappointed me this year.  He hasn't progressed like I hoped he would have.

 

He's giving very little on offense, and I haven't seen him as a good defender this year.

Does he shoot 3s because we see that he can or because we need him to?  Remember when we tried to turn Tai into a 3 pt specialist for a year? Is Jacobson all messed up because we're trying to turn him into a stretch 4?

I suppose that could be part of it.

 

But I'm not sure that would explain his difficulty in making put-backs or most any other shot of close proximity while in traffic.

 

And I'm not sure they would have wanted him putting on the kind of weight he did if they simply wanted him camping out at the three-point line. That muscle was for working in the lane.

Jacobson should be a really serviceable 5.  He's too slow to guard opposing swing 4s, and plenty strong to give good minutes guarding the 5.  He can also score easier on a 5 as a faceup player because he's decent off the dribble.  

 

Ed, on the other hand, can definitely guard the 4 and completely destroy most 4s on the glass.  

 

Jordy is better than Maric was at the same age.  He needs to play 20+ minutes a night WITH Ed.  

 

Sub Roby for Ed and Jacobson for Jordy and opposing teams have an entirely different matchup problem to worry about.

Miles said they call Jeriah "buckets" in practice.  If you've got a guy you call "buckets" in practice I think you need to be playing him a lot more from here on out, considering our offensive woes.
