So, we started the year in the high 90s and are now mid-70s.  Good.  Really need to get at least one win in the next three.

Remainder of the non-conference schedule:

B1G/ACC Challenge game at Clemson (Weds, Nov. 30: 8 pm on ESPNU)

South Dakota at home (Sat., Dec. 3 – BTN Plus)

Creighton at home (Weds, Dec. 7: 8 pm on BTN)

At Kansas (Sat., Dec. 10: 2:15 pm on ESPN)

Gardner-Webb at home (Sun., Dec. 18 on ESPNU)

Southern Univ. at home (Tues., Dec. 20 – BTN Plus)

I feel like we shoulda beat Va Tech.  But, on the bright side, I, for one, am a whole lot happier having a team like Va Tech be my "shoulda won" come post-season time than Samford or Incarnate Word.  That's a huge step forward in my book.

Still got a couple Samford/Incarnate Word - ish games yet on the schedule to navigate past though.  ohno.gif

The upside, if you want to call it that, of playing such a difficult non-con schedule for this young team is that even in a loss we can move up in the KenPom rankings.  This morning finds us leapfrogging ahead of Iowa.  So we got that going for us...which is nice.

Wow, I missed the fact that Northwestern might finally make the NCAA tournament this year. Collins must be doing pretty good there.

Not sure they make the big dance this year......but he has really turned that roster around.  They return quite a bit next year as well.  They look more skilled and athletic than years past.  Vic Law is a stud.  NU vs NU will be a good matchup this year.

Interesting that our offense/defense has flipflopped the last few years on KenPom

2016-17:       127 offense 46 defense

2015-16:       87 offense 116 defense

2014-15:       264 offense 28 defense

Overall, looks like our profile is a good defensive team. Guess last year was a blip.

Big jump for Illinois after a couple big wins, and Iowa...oh, Iowa...

Also, take not of Louisiana Tech.  They're creeping towards double-digits.  That win is on the verge of looking like a very good one.

Well we didn't get that second win in the current gauntlet we're running (barring what would have to be considered one of the all-time biggest upsets in NU history on Saturday) so our shot at a .500 record and the NIT this year is starting to fade away, unfortunately.  Good news is the Big Ten is looking more like it's having a down year all the time so there may be opportunities to pick up an extra win or two (KenPom has us finishing 14-16 as of now, so a couple unexpected wins can go a long ways towards this turning into a productive, if not totally satisfying, season).  Here are the current rankings:

By the way our SOS has jumped into the top 20 and will likely bump up a few more spots Saturday:

Strength of Schedule
Components: 108.6 13 99.6 42 102.6
Overall: +8.98 20 0.00
Non-conference: +8.98 20 0.00

We are, in fact, #1 in the B1G in that category:

B1G Non-Con SOS
===============

20. Nebraska (5-4)

22. Michigan State (6-4)
116. Wisconsin (8-2)
122. Purdue (7-2)
132. Michigan (7-2)
139. Minnesota (8-1)

148. Illinois (7-3)

161. Maryland (9-1)
170. Northwestern (6-2)
205. Penn State (6-4)

282. Iowa (4-5)

318. Indiana (7-1)
322. Ohio State (7-2)
351. Rutgers (8-1)

So, having that said, it wouldn't be a terrible stretch of the imagination to think that if we had played a less challenging non-con more like Purdue, say, that we could also be sitting here at 7-2 as well right now don't you think?
