Tonight we play Maryland who we played within 5 points during the season. But we have play 2 games and they are completely fresh. Obviously this is a huge huge advantage for Maryland.

Either only give the top 2 seeds byes or if you insist on 4 teams having byes then only allow 12 teams to qualify.

I think it's stupid the B1G wants 4 teams to have byes (or double byes).

2 of the 8 teams remaining have played 2 games while 4 of them haven't played 1.

Well, this season it would have made some sense to exclude the tandem of Minny & Rutgerz who combined for 1 win outside of beating each other. And it was Minny winning over #3 Maryland, the Huskers next opponent. Time to give those ninja Turtles a good beatdown!

just wondering....would you feel the same way if Nebraska had had won that last game and had a first round bye? or better yet we won enough to have been one of the 4 that had the double byes?

I would. I started a thread about it after they announced new format.

Granted I am a Nebrasketball fan so I know alot of the time we will be in danger of being in the bottom 4.

But in my defense if my team was 1-17 in conference I wouldnt think they deserved a spot.

In other words I know some years Nebraska might be in danger of being in the cellar and missing the tournament.

The problem is it's EXTREMELY difficult to fit more than 4 games at a single venue in a single day.  I hate the single bye and definitely the double bye as much as anyone, but unless you can host the BTT in a city that has more than one venue suitable to host games (or can do the first couple rounds in different cities then move the semis and finals to a single location) I don't see how it will ever change.

I don't mind it.  You are rewarding teams who deserve to be rewarded.  One thing that might be nice is to have rounds 1 and 2 on Monday and Tuesday, and then give everyone a day off on Wednesday.  To do this though, you would probably have to give everyone one less bye during a week in the Big 10 season and end the season sooner than the Sunday before Championship Week.  Don't know if this would ever happen or not, but its a thought

The nice thing is we have played 2 games in 2 days and have probably been shooting at this gym for 3.  Maryland might have trouble adjusting to playing somewhere new.  I know its a neutral site, but we probably have more shots and definitely have more game experience at this place.

If this were a deal where this is the final event of the season I would agree with Pimp.  It should be a normal bracket in that case.  Four day event.  Thursday you would have 6 games.  3-14 4-13 5-12 etc so it is cut down to the standard 8.

However, I think the Big 10 has to do something similar to what they are doing.  It protects some of our better clubs from four in four.  That grind often seems to carry over to the dance the following weekend.  Better to have our conference teams a little more fresh.   When the thing is a week earlier when it is in NYC, I wouldn't mind going to a more standard bracket.

Did Penn St and NW have better years than us and deserve a bye? Maybe, maybe not.

Had we beat either one of them head to head in the last 2 weeks of the season, the roles would have likely been reversed.   We didn't.

I like the B10, but I would love to go back to the day of 8 team conferences.  This is the perfect size for a conference, IMO.  With that size, there is a better sense of kinship - and even rivalry - between schools.  Geographically, schools are closer together, and finally, the ridiculous bracketing you have today goes away because there are no byes.

30 years ago, schools like Nebraska had both a regional affiliation (Big 8) and a national affiliation (NCAA).  I thought it was a nice balance.  With the growth of TV and media, conferences are understandably striving to have a national presence, but I think we lost something in the transition.

As far as the BG10 tourney, I would be in favor of allowing only the top 8 in the final standings participate for the post season title.  Somehow, I don't think that's going to happen.

Irony is that losing those regular season games put Nebraska in position to have a more favorable bracket. Weird how that oddly developed in Nebrasketball's favor, for once! Just need three more dubs & this will be greatest five-game conference turnaround after the Huskers' 5-game losing streak ended their regular season. :D

I truly believe that things happen for a reason.  There is a reason our season went the way it did.  I just hope it's the same reason that I am thinking right now.

True enough. But we did beat Penn State once by heck of a lot more than they beat us. And while they may have had the better win by b1g standings, Indiana, I think we can all agree that Michigan state was a better win. Especially considering we beat Michigan State on the road and that Indiana has had an easy Big Ten schedule. In other words I don't buy that Penn State did better in conference than we did.

Don't like it?  Get better and avoid one of the bottom 4 seeds.

Problem solved.

My thoughts exactly.  If you don't like playing on Wednesday, then get better.  Don't say it's not fair for the better teams to get a "bye".  They should get rewarded for a better season.

14 teams in the conference is unwieldy: That's where the "problem" occurred. Not the manifestation in the conference tournament format.

my memory isn't the greatest...but in the old big 8 days...wasn't the first round played at the higher seeds home court and then the winner of those games went to KC?

We didn't seem to mind it 2 years ago.

We had a poor season. We don't deserve any assistance to advance.

But look at how much fun this is! We're an 11 seed making a tourney run. Isn't that what makes this sport so damned great?

But wouldn't it be way more fun knowing that we might be able to win it all and not run out of gas?
