An offensively challenged Kimani Ffriend that you have to wait a year for and hope he doesn't smoke his way out of the program before it happens.

Yeah, he's supposedly leaving because the new coach is too strict. Several pot disciplines already, no thanks.

Not sure it would be worth it to tie up a scholarship for 2 years to just get 1 year from him.

If we don't land Chukwu it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.  I think he's a worthy scholarship player and signing him would be better than leaving a scholarship open like we have done every year since Miles has been hired.

With this staffs ability to recruit I have no problem leaving a scholarship open for a better prospect next season. Sometimes keeping your powder dry is the best option.

Understand what you are saying but filling the ship (and this is by no means an endorsement for a kid that his off court issues from what has been said) gives you another quality player that the starters have to practice against if he is not a starter.  No offense the walk-ons but I doubt they make Shields work as hard as Petteway or Webster would.  IF they did, they would have gotten ship out of high school.

Does he have Randy Gregory levels of talent?

As in good enough to turn the other way if a trail of smoke follows him when he takes the floor? Not in my opinion. Definitely a valuable player, somebody you'd might keep working with if he was already in your program and you thought you could reach. But bringing him in with the hope that he'd see the light? He's not that good, and he's had multiple chances for a St. John's program that wasn't previously running a taut ship, as they apparently are now. I get the impression that we've set the bar high on character issues, this would be lowering it..

I went to junior college with Tony Allen of the Memphis Grizzlies. He was kicked out after his freshman year at Butler due to his 5th involvement with weed. They tried everything they could to keep him because he was such a talent. like Gregory there are some talents that get way more chances than they should. Not saying Obekpa is at that level but sometimes you have to roll the dice to get the talent.

I would much rather sit on the scholarship again rather than give it to some questionable prospect(assuming this prospect is not a senior transfer.)  But, judging off the previous classes and this class so far...there is no guarantee Miles will fulfill all scholarships.  It's already hard enough as it is to recruit here...we are essentially putting ourselves on probation by not using all 13 scholarships each year.  Hopefully there are still some quality options out there that can help out this year's team.  If not, this year's class should be easier to fill out the roster as we only have two seniors and 1 unused scholarship(assuming we don't have any transfers.) With Roby already committed that leaves us with only having to find two more players to fill out the roster.
