Bugeaters1 Posted August 16, 2015 Report Posted August 16, 2015 I'm hoping that is not all you wear, Cip. Nah, just when he's hanging out in the city parks after hours. He wears nothing in the city parks. Quote

trickey Posted September 8, 2015 Report Posted September 8, 2015 There was an interesting post from Avery' Army on Facebook about the family minus Chris moving back to Nebraska due to medical care concerns. Here is the post. Day +344 Post SCT: Here's your halftime report, brought to you by #AveryStrong! We are at it again with all the meds. Avery's Graft vs Host disease is at a point where it needs to be treated throughout his entire body. Not only does this mean daily meds for Avery, that suppress his immune system, but it means more needle pokes for him. As a parent of a child with special needs, its hard not to live in fear, but we try to hand our fear over to God and trust the journey. I know no matter where we are in the world Avery's condition won't change, but its our job as parents to put Avery in the best situation, with the best resources, and great support. Unfortunately the last couple of months have not been in our favor with Drs and schools. For that and a few other reasons we are MOVING BACK TO NEBRASKA where there are more resources and where we absolutely trust the medical care. The experiences we've gone through the last couple of months have made me think...God forbid something more serious were to happen to Avery...this is not the right place for him. This is the first time that we are splitting up the family (Chris will stay here in NM), so it will be super difficult, but this is whats best for all three of our kids. We are super excited! Avery will be back with the nurses & doctors he feels safe with, he will be back at the same school he feels safe at, and he'll be with the friends he loves. We'll be in a community we love & trust! See you in a couple weeks Husker Nation!!!! Quote
HuskerFever Posted September 8, 2015 Report Posted September 8, 2015 Wow. That is certainly a tough decision but it sounds like it was very well thought out. I wish all the best for Avery and the family. Quote
arliepro Posted September 8, 2015 Report Posted September 8, 2015 They need our support/prayers now more than ever. Quote

jimmykc Posted September 8, 2015 Report Posted September 8, 2015 This has to be a gut-wrenching decision for the family. I pray things work out for all of them, but in any situation involving health care, absolute confidence in caregivers is the most important factor in a successful outcome and sometimes there are no do-overs so it sounds like they have made the proper call. Norm Peterson Posted September 8, 2015 Report Posted September 8, 2015 Too bad they didn't make this decision a few weeks ago. We had an opening. Chris could have been with his family. Bugeaters1 and Silverbacked1 2 Quote
Silverbacked1 Posted September 8, 2015 Report Posted September 8, 2015 That was one of the selling points of their move was that New Mexico had a good rep as a good med center. I think that tells you something about the care you get here in Nebraska. Hope only for the best for them. Red Don, Bugeaters1 and Row6Seat10 3 Quote

I know you're only being half serious here, but in all honesty, I really hope for all the best for all of the Harrimans. I can't imagine any family going through a situation more difficult than the one they face. It's gotta be hell for Chris to be away from them like that. Red Don 1 Quote

It would have been ideal for that family to be together. If here is the best place for Avery, then here is where Chris would probably most want to be. And, I guess, put the career moves on hold while Avery continues to battle. Head coaching gigs will have to wait. And, the fact of the matter is that we did have an opening. One for which, as it happens, we know he would have been a good fit. Quote
KarlHessEatMy.... Posted September 8, 2015 Report Posted September 8, 2015 I think it would be awesome to find a home game this coming season that NM has off where Chris Harriman and his family could attend and have an #AveryStrong game to support the family still!!! He may have left Nebraska but I still care about the family!!! Haymarket Husker, Bugeaters1, Silverbacked1 and 2 others 5 Quote

One for which, as it happens, we know he would have been a good fit. The absolute most cruel part of this is, no, they probably won't wait. If he doesn't pursue this opportunity now, chances are extremely high that he may never get another shot as a Div 1 head coach. Say what you want about how much the head coaches are paid today, especially at the highest level, but the job is probably the most brutally competitive job in the world and any slip in your progress can doom your career forever. Yes, he probably feels like he should forgo the UNM opportunity and be with his family from an emotional standpoint - any father would - but from a logical POV, he probably feels like he has no other choice than to do what he's doing. I'm sure it's horrible...I don't envy him at all. Bugeaters1 and hhcmatt 2 Quote
Silverbacked1 Posted September 8, 2015 Report Posted September 8, 2015 One still has to pay the bills and that is his job. I am sure this was one of the hardest things they have had to do in a life of making hard choices. Bugeaters1 1 Quote
bobcat402 Posted September 8, 2015 Report Posted September 8, 2015 it amazes me how coaches like coach harriman, Bill O'Brien with the Texans now, and countless others find ways to battle thru what must be absurdly high emotions and struggles putting in the hours that is required in the positions, with the weight of their children's pain on their minds what must be constantly. Thoughts and best wishes to Avery and Coach Harriman Bugeaters1 and Red Don 2 Quote
Red Don Posted September 9, 2015 Report Posted September 9, 2015 I am pleased, and saddened at the same time, by the news the Harriman family will be returning to Nebraska; they Are one of us. Pleased that Avery will soon be back beside his adopted 'Husker' family where he feels most comfortable, and saddened by the events necessitating his return. This news is a testament to the quality of our medical facilities and caring support of our community. Nothing but Best Wishes and prayers to Avery and his family. I think it's a great idea to dedicate a home game to Avery and his battle. I know Benny and Shavon, indeed, the entire team would be in favor. Silverbacked1, HB and Bugeaters1 3 Quote
