puts up about the same numbers as pitchford.

From the looks of things on the Providence and UConn boards he's a guy with a helicopter father shopping for a place to audition for the NBA. Whoever signs him is probably going to get a headache when he's not playing or touching the ball enough. 2 years ago we happily jump on that gernade...I hope we don't these days.

It just floors me on how many parent issues there are now in college sports.  You kind of expect some of that in high school but for years it seemed college was a different story.  Not now.  I have talked to a few of the in state college coaches and they are saying some of the same things as far as "helicopter" parents.

Hes already got one gravy train with Tobias in the NBA why does he need two.

I will reserve judgment until he gets here.  I can say this, I am pretty convinced Coach Miles will not sell his soul in order to get a kid here...perhaps that is naive thinking, but if the kid can play, and his character is sound, and his Dad is simply concerned...perhaps he will indeed land here.

We're on a list of 10 schools....odds are he never gets here. I don't think his ability to help us is a question at all....he does have talent.

Harris stats for 2013-14 from the official Provedence site (can't find the 2014-15 there yet) compared to this year's stats for Walter are:

Harris shot .433 from the field--136 of 314 (Walter shot .378--82 of 217);

Harris shot .322 from three--29 of 90 (Walter shot .289--37 of 128);

Harris shot .839 from the line--104 of 124 (Walt shot .485--16 of 33);

Harris had 5.1 rebounds per game--76 off., 103 def., 179 total (Walter had 4.6 per game--29 off., 108 def., 137 total);

Harris had 11.6 points per game (Walt had 7.2);

Harris had 49 total assists (Walt had 14);

Harris had 34 steals (Walt had 10); and

Harris had 75 turnovers (Walt had 33).

There may be similarities, but free throw percentage differences are dramatic. Also, differences in offensive rebounds, assists, steals, and numbers of free throws and shots from the field attempted suggest that Harris is a much more active and engaged player on the inside. The only stat comparison significantly in Walt's favor is turnovers--but that probably reflects the same difference in activity and engagement on the inside.

Can we make it a rule that we can only compare potential transfers to WP's 2013-14 stats?

And we only allow people to transfer if they have a cool nickname to shout when they hit a 3?

Not exactly.  I think the rebounding numbers are a bit misleading without some context.  Providence was a better rebounding team.  They had more guys who were effective rebounders, which means, individually, their numbers would be lower.

I can't pull up Pomeroy's advanced metric stuff, but my guess is that Providence was a better rebounding team than we were and, per minute played, Harris still snags as many rebounds.  Walt showed from time to time that he could rebound if he wanted to.

According to ESPN, Prov ranked 87th in the nation in team rebounding; we were 237th.  Harris was among a number of good rebounders on that Providence team.  Plus, they were a much better shooting team, meaning there were substantially fewer offensive rebounding opportunities for Harris at Prov than there were for Pitchford here.  So, you can't really compare per game average to per game average.

Providence was a better rebounding team on both sides of the ball, blew us away on offensive boards.

Their rebounding was spread out pretty consistently...they had a lot of height.

Walt had a higher defensive rebounding percentage but you could probably chalk that up to lack of competition.

There is some baggage with Harris.  Rumors are that he was a locker room headache (which in part might explain why Cooley is letting him go).

True, we don't need another headache.  Although, it seems like even headaches can get their shpit straight for a season or so.  Look how Harris performed his first season at Prov after transferring from NC State.  He was better that first year.  He could be better again.

Not questioning his skill set at all - he is a high major player for sure.  It just seems strange that in the same year that Providence is losing one of its best wings in LaDonte Henton, Cooley does very little to try to convince Harris to stick around.

Every time I hear of these type of players, I immediately think of Terran Petteway & Walt Pitchford. It really could go any number of ways (up, down, sideways, ?)... I'd take a kid like Harris & 'roll the dice' for a year, ISU seems to do it quite regularly with success.

This will be his 3 school in 5 years so that can obviously raise some red flags.  To the opposite side its his last chance so he may do whatever it takes in his final go round to make the league.

the problem here is that we'd probably need harris to play Center like pitchford did, and Harris is even smaller than pitchford.

Does he have the WILL to do what it takes?  That is 50 percent of the battle.  If Pitchford had the WILL to play center, I have no doubt that he could have succeeded there.
