OK, well, how about this year?  Who would you have poached off of their team to be on our team THIS year?  And where in the rotation would you put them?

Underclassman, or anybody?

If it's anybody, I'm picking Kreklow, probably to platoon with Rivers?

49r and baseball13, let's say you got Groselle and Hanson, respectively.  And let's say the player you chose was somehow immediately eligible to play here next season.  Where do they fit in the rotation?  Neither of you answered that part of the question.

Starting Center, Walt moves to the 4, Hammond is the backup C.

I'm sorry, but you're nuts.  If you move Walt to the 4, where do you put Shields?  If Shields slides to the 3, where do you put White?  If you slide White to the 2, do you take Petteway out of the lineup?  No?  So, do you start Groselle over Walt?  He's averaging 5 pts and 2 bds in 11 minutes for Creighton.  How do you start him over Walt?

Sounds reasonable.  I'd probably make the same choice.  Probably 6th man.

Walt takes over David's spot.  Shields stays where he is, White is TP's backup.

I mean, doesn't our starting lineup usually look like this?

Benny

Terran

Shields

David (or Leslee)

Walt

I just see sliding Walt down to the stretch 4 position, which he clearly prefers anyway and let Groselle play Center.  I'm just saying.  Plus, he's seemed to turn it on in his last 4 or 5 games or so.  And it's not like Hanson has torn it up either and you didn't castigate huskerbaseball13 for his choice!  ;)

That's because he didn't stick Geoff "Two Boards" Groselle into the starting lineup ahead of Andrew White for III.

I know they beat us, but how can Sam say Creighton has more talent this year? I've watched them play a couple of times and I'm not sure they have a single guy who could start for another Big East team. They are exactly where they should be in the Big East.

Nebraska easily has more talent this year.  Creighton has better shooting, but that is only one part of the puzzle when evaluating talent, and one that Sam obviously gives far too much importance.   It really is not close.  We have far more guys that are equipped to play great defense.

I would ask Sam who other teams would rather play in a must win conference tourney game.  With a straight face, he could not possibly say Nebraska.  The reason is because we are easily more talented than Creightion is.  Pretty ridiculous question in the first place.

I could not care less if you answer Sam on twitter...but perhaps it is of interest to respond here...especially since we lost in our building. I am still dumbfounded and extremely dissappointed.

This is much to often a conversation in Omaha. I am tired of saying, "Well yeah, but not next year."

And I really do believe that.

Any thoughts?

Getting back to the original topic, I have a question:

If Creighton has more talent, let's say we could go over to their program and poach one underclassman from their roster to play on our team next season.  Who do you poach, and where in our rotation would you put them?  Starter?  Sixth man?  Key reserve?  Where?

It'd be Huff.

Since this thread is seemingly going on to infinity, here's another question to ponder. Which group of sportswriters are more talented, the group at the Omaha World Herald or the group at the Lincoln Journal Star.? I'll say they are both in the lower echelon of metro sports journalists, but I'll lean toward OWH because Barfy occasionally has some insightful articles rather than just trying to poke the hive. The LJS guys seem nice but bland although Sipple knows how to raise a chicken.

Posted

Jimmy that is a tough question.  I believe both the OWH and LJS employee some talented sportswriters.  I appreciate the style of the LJS writers over many of the OWH writers...if that makes sense.  It has always been my preference to have a writer tell the story and not be the story.  There are some writers at the OWH who (my perception mind you) wish to be bigger than the story.  I will say that Sam is not part of that group.  And I may get blasted for this, but I believe Sip and Shatel are the two best.  I have always compared Tom to Maury White, may he RIP.  Maury was sort of old school in his approach and his verbiage and style took my mind to a special place.

Barfy and Dirky are the reasons I would give the LJS a big edge, their stuff should be used to line the bird cage.  Sam is the reason the OWH even comes close.  Granted it will be fun to see how Sip handles a new football coach in Lincoln.  Will he take a continue to be a huge homer for the coach or will he actually point out flaws.

Interesting take col.  I know a lot of people say that Sip was a Bo homer.  But I didn't see it.  I do believe that Sip presented facts, but did so without being negative to the coaches or program.  Dirk on the other hand, tended to personalize his articles.  And in doing so seemed to either overtly or covertly undermine the program.  Again, it seems to be a matter of style.

They're both quite good, but I'm probably biased since I know reporters on both sides.

Sam's the best football writer bar none. Dirk is really, really talented and gets ripped way too often here. Lee is well connected but is a bit arogant for my taste. Shatel, Rosenthal, BC and Sip are all solid.

Mabry was always my favorite at the LJS but he long since moved to leaner and greener pastures at the Food Bank. And whatever one thinks of Babcock as a writer, he has managed to carve a pretty nice career from writing about Husker sports. Also, don't forget Randy York who has been at the University forever was a writer who covered the basketball beat at the LJS once upon a time.

Dirk is that you?  :)
