Lots of talk about Craig Neal being a top target for Mizzou.

And I have to ask myself, now why in the hell would he leave New Mexico for that job?

At what point will schools realize who can and cannot be hired away? - CBSSports.com

The Tennessee job that opened this week is not the best job in the SEC, and it's not the second best job in the SEC, either. But it might be the third best, and it's probably no worse than the fourth best given that the facilities are terrific and three different coaches have led the Vols to 11 of the past 17 NCAA Tournaments, and five Sweet 16 appearances in the past 15 years. In other words, Tennessee has been able to make the Sweet 16, on average, every three years for the past 15 years regardless of the coach (and despite an NCAA investigation and subsequent probation), and that's why some man somewhere will be lucky to land the job at some point, presumably, in the next week.

But it won't be Shaka Smart.

And, barring a surprise, it will not be Gregg Marshall, either.

Tennessee has been to six Sweet Sixteens in their lifetime and Bruce Pearl is directly responsible for 3 of them. Cuanzo Martin's biggest problem, like anyone who follows a living legend, is that he wasn't Bruce Pearl.

Richard Pitino has also been mentioned.  Cue the nervous nellies...    ;)

Take a drive down I-40 and you'll have your answer.

Seriously, though, I doubt he'd leave his alma mater for Mizzou.

Been all the way across New Mexico several times on I-40, and also on I-25 and taken the Amtrak Southwest Chief.  New Mexico is a beautiful place and I think Albuquerque is a decent spot.

Plus, UNM hoops is a bit like the Huskers.  Only game in town ;) and the basketball coach there is a major celebrity.

Seriously though, IMHO, Mizzou (and the SEC) would be a step down from the Lobos and the MWC.  Only thing they would be able to do is pay him more money (he only makes $750k at UNM).  However, UNM has shown the willingness to pay $2 million to Alford so he's got the ability to earn big dollars where he's at.  Finally, Neal has a $1 million buyout in his current contract.  That's going to be a big matzoh ball for even Missouri to try to swallow.

But if you think the drive across New Mexico on 40 is bad, I'll counter with this...have you ever driven across Missouri on 70?  :D

But we agree.  Mizzou's not going to get Neal.

It was probably an unfair jab on my part on NM. ;)  Agree with you, New Mexico has it's beauty.  And of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder (or however that phrase goes).

Huskercager: I spent a summer at Philmont in the Sangre de Cristos and you should check out Santa Fe and Riudoso down south before you make your judgement on New Mexico. Heck, we even spent our honeymoon in Truth or Consequences (perhaps the only couple to ever do that). And Walter White did really well down there too (I hear he made buckets of money). Beats anything I ever saw in the Ozarks.

If you could choose the Timberwolves next coach for them and you had to choose between Izzo and Hoiberg and the only criterion was which choice would be better for Nebraska basketball, which one would you choose?  Is it better for us for ISU to lose Hoiberg (hey, maybe they could hire Greg McDermott?) or better for us that Michigan State lose Izzo to the pros?

Personally, I'd hire Hoiberg away to the T'wolves.  I think that would be best case scenario for us.

Doc @ISU would happen before G-Mac is back, I'd imagine...

In less than five years, Frank Haith's coaching pedigree has gone from ACC to Big 12 (1-yr) to SEC and, now, to Conf. USA... not once having been fired. That's quite a trip down the career ladder!

Or you mean Big East?

Looks like Tulsa University will be joining the American Athletic Conference this upcoming season.... which is a step-up from Conf.USA & Big LEast. ;)

...I might recommend not reading his twitter feed though.  It reads like a lyric sheet to a Prince song and he uses Bro at the end of about every other tweet.

Might be a pretty decent hire...

Not much for the Twitter content, but this guy has accomplished things on the court. Wonder if Missouri inquired with his agent. And now, where will Southern Miss look?

Gregg Marshall

Shaka Smart

Ben Howland

et cetera
