Did anyone else see the one ref point at Coach Miles and (what appeared) warned him.  At the moment Miles was planted firmly on the bench.  It was one of the glaring examples of bias that I thought was occurring at the time.  The Illinois coaching staff were up and down like yo-yo's and screaming like mad men...and the ref's said nothing.  Later, that ref was having a one-on-one dicusssion with Coach Miles and it appeared he was explaining himself.  Strange...strange indeed.

It was really just the one ref that was atrocious and the other two had to make up for him with a ton of make up calls.  Not really sure what the deal was, but the one looked like he had just been called up from the YMCA league.

This.   An Illinois assistant basically got a 3 minute audience with the ref during a timeout.  Immediately afterward, Miles gets the finger pointing warning from a ref 60 feet away.  Bizarre.

I don't understand it. I can't remember the play but after a call Groce came all the way across the 3 pt line way down by the baseline to get after an official. And I think that might have been right after the play where the Illinois player drove in from the left wing and we were whistled for a no-touch foul.

If you told me that Illinois' game plan was to purposely drive underneath the basket to set up a pass to a guy who was going to either miss or pass because he was sick of missing, I would believe you.

We're towards the bottom in assist % in the nation, mostly because we're running an offense geared on penetration, not passing.  Would it surprise you to learn that Illinois is the only B1G team worse than us in assist %?

Another two random thoughts.  First, that one drive to the basket by Rice was spectacular.  All we could say after the play was "WOW."  The second, I thought that any loose ball went to Illinois last night.  That was a bit disappointing.  It didn't appear to be a lack of hustle on our part, it just seemed as if the ball was bouncing to Illinois, each and every time.

I agree with these observations. On the loose balls, that did happen--sometimes luck of the bounce, and sometimes superior atheticism

Saw the same thing.  Miles' reaction showed that it took him by surprise, too.

I get a kick out of Miles leaning back on the scorer's table waiting for the big screen replay on questionable calls. Like he's just double-checking to make sure he's right before he blows a gasket. Some calls last night were horrible. Was not surprised that Illinois was already in the bonus with 12 minutes left in the game considering they were playing offense on Groce's half of the court.

Okay, last night was an example of how the game was to be called in the beginning of the year, then we got away from it and now it is back. Well at least on our end of the court.

The way I see it, the off ball defender will never get a charge call, this year. So might as well try to block the shot instead.

Also how many step is it now to the rim for a lay up, and can you really switch pivot feet if you don't go anywhere and haven't taken your first dribble?

That was on the carrying call on Petteway (that I also disagreed with) but then they never showed the replay.  #bigscreenproblems.  Of course Miles will get to see the film and I won't.  But the bad ref made that call and Miles might have wanted to pick up his 1st T if the replay had shown the call was a bad one.

You were probably at the game Norm. I couldn't make it so I watched on TV and Miles leaned back and looked at the big screen on a handful of calls, not just the carry (which was a good call, btw, and one that they got Illinois for later as well). BTN showed him after every questionable call and he did it all the time on blocks/charges, handchecks, etc. It was pretty funny. Of course I was losing my mind, so kudos to him for being at least more patient than I am.

Side note: last night was the first time I can remember this season our opponent getting called for an illegal screen. It seems to me that we get called for that at least once a game.

Loved reading the game thread over at illinoisloyalty.com and how they were all talking about Sheilds having "the game of his life" against them...like it was going to take some kind of Herculean effort for us to beat them or something.

Uh, no fellas.  That wasn't the game of his life.  It wasn't even the first 30 point effort for him this season.

Yeah that play by Rice was pretty cool - and the subsequent crowd reaction, a loud mixture of groans and "WOW"s was pretty good too - I loved the sh!+ eating grin on his face on the way back down the floor - has to feel pretty good to make a play like that and then get that kind of reaction out of the opposing crowd.

Of course that was the last point he had until a late garbage bucket as Parker took him out of the game after that - so that grin didn't last long.  :D At least he didn't cry.

I hate that call.  No, it wasn't the first.  There was at least one other.  But illegal screens happen all the time.  All the time.  And it only gets called at strange moments.  Like in the last minute against Oregon a few years back they called one on Brandon Ubel.  Like really?  They've been doing it to us all game and then you choose this moment to suddenly care about illegal screens?

Minnesota was another game where they did it just all of the time.  That Smith kid or whatever his name was who scored about 30 on us, Ray was chasing him around screens all night long and their screener would throw a hip into Ray or move over into him to give that guy just enough separation to get off a 3 pointer.  And that's how they drew closer towards the end.

Damn frustrating when they call us for that given how often it gets ignored.  And we generally get the short end because our offense isn't predicated on curling shooters around screens to get them open for a catch-and-shoot 3.  And when your chaser gets picked by a guy who throws a hip into him, freeing up the shooter, that's supposed to be a foul.  Right?

The sad part is, this is how it is with most calls. A lot of things will go uncalled until the coach asks for it to be watched, like 3 seconds. Refs will almost never call it until a coach says "Watch 42, he's camping in the lane all day." Sure enough, you'll get the call in the next couple possessions. Referees have so many things to watch for that sometimes it's all about the coach just making refs aware. It's a lot of politics. It sucks, but it is.
