There is currently a thread on another message board where the OP is seriously asking why the university of nebraska doesn’t drop the men’s basketball program and replace it with………Hockey. His main reason is the futility of the program the past 100 years.

I know initial reaction is to laugh this off, but I was surprised how many other people chimed in with support for the idea.

Now, knowing the numbers, I know this is preposterous. So I chimed in.

Nebraska already has a hockey team and it’s in Omaha.

There are a lot of opinions out there right now, many of them probably from people who watch 2 or 3 Nebraska basketball games all year, if that.

Lots of people calling for Fred to be fired too. He is under contract through 2028-29 and we would owe him somewhere around $18-20 million. In an era where athletes are about to start being paid by the university...and a year after being named Coach of the Year. Miles was owed about $2.5 million. There's no way, unless we lose every game, players quit, and someone offers a ton of money to buy him out. In which case if they cared that much they'd probably already have given it to 1890.

Yeah let's cut a top revenue generating sport for a cost guzzler. Makes sense.

I'm sure the sentiment is more excited about getting hockey as a scholarship sport than it is about replacing a sport. People have been asking for hockey for decades.

You would have thought something would have happened around the time of the Breslow Hockey Center was built, or joining the Big Ten. But the ROI might not be there (or some other factor).

I havent been to a Stars game in maybe 10 years, but they dont sell out like they did before do they?

Reason I am asking is how do we replace a program that still fills most of Pinnacle 20 times a year with a program that doesnt fill 5,010?

I know people are just talking to hear themselves talk, but that would be beyond stupid.

6th highest attendance in the Big Ten (even amongst newcomers), #15 in the nation for ticket attendance.

Rank School G Attendance Average

15. Nebraska 19 277,338 14,597

I don't think people are aware of this, nor do they care. This is why they're not qualified to run an athletic department.

There were very few games where I could find a way to sneak down into the 100 level during the Bryce McGowens year. Basketball isn't going anywhere (nor should it). Yeah, we're 12-8 and on a six game skid. I bet that poster doesn't know just how close we are to 16-4 and a possible top 5-6 seed though.

We have 3 single possession losses, all of which we had a shot against, and the 5 point loss to USC (shout-out Frost era). I'm not going to say "oh we're so close" because that's just bad juju and I might see Scotts shadow somewhere. In all 4 of those losses we had major breakdowns in different areas, most of which being defense, and it was still as close as it was. Basketball isn't going anywhere lol and people are just being emotional at this moment, and rightfully so.

I went to every Bryce mcgowens game and I think the only game I left early was the Michigan clobbering.

Title IX issues would be present.

Former North Star & Golden Gopher Legend Lou Nanne talks about this on KFAN Radio in Mpls often. Particularly about Nebraska, I don’t think it’s going to happen for several reasons, but it would be nice to have a Mens/Womens Hockey Team.

NCAA hockey could get a level of play boost now that players that played Major Junior in the Canadian leagues will be able to play college hockey here if they don’t have an opportunity in a NHL teams system.

I also read that College Soccer might be going to a longer season and aligning under the US Soccer Federation. If so, a mens soccer team would be interesting as well.

Clearly no one remembers the secret agreement Tom Osborne and Trev Alberts made when UNO dropped football that NU would never add hockey. 😁

NU is not adding men's hockey - unless some booster comes up with $100M-plus to fully fund hockey for a decade-plus like Penn St did.

I don't think PBA's seat alignments and sight lines work for ice hockey either, if I remember right from when it was built. And the Breslow Center was not built for varsity ice hockey - it works great for club hockey and curling at NU, though - much better than playing in Fremont like the club hockey team used to do.

Didn't they already invest in the Breslow Center?

I'd be surprised if Breslow seats even 1000 for hockey. All metal bleachers that fold up I believe. Works great for the club team and other recreational activities, but not close to suitable for a B1G hockey team. It might be slightly larger than the second sheet of ice at Baxter Arena in Omaha that UNO uses for practices and that youth hockey teams use.

I don't believe Breslow would be expandable either, but I don't remember if that was ever part of the plans when they built it.
