Not sure what thread this was best for…… but I spoke to someone today who definitely has some connections, and they said this is about as confident Fred and Co. have been going into a season since being here. Will be a different type of team than maybe we’re all imagining. Idk what that means.

You have no idea what I can imagine.

If it's anything less than winning the whole  damn thing than his confidence is less than mine has been 37 years and running.

So, I got a little clarification on "different type of team."

Sounds like we're just really big and bruising. Might be a little more emphasis on post play? Not exactly hammering it down into Meah by any means, but it sounds like they have worked a lot on mismatches and exploiting different guys in the post. Even guys like Rollie have posted up (similar to Sam G.). We'll shoot a lot of 3's because that's what they all believe in, but it does really sound like there's quite a bit of emphasis on using the size of this team to our advantage and putting ourselves in position to get O rebounds. Little bit more grinding it out offensively to beat you down. But who knows!

Last season I thought that would be the best rebounding team Fred had rolled out which was not a high bar to hit.  We were on pace at the beginning of the season but we seemed to putter out once we got into B1G play and Mast wearing out.  Once again I'm going to be under the assumption that this will be Fred's best rebounding team here which is still not a high bar.

Let's get Tropical!

Thank you for the update!

This does not shock me.  This team has the depth to play that style.  I would take it one step further though.  The team can/will still run when the opportunities are there; but will be able to pound the rock as well.

Flexibility is the key.  We will not need to be one dimensional, which is great when it is working; but when it is not...yikes.

Once again, thanks for the information basketballjones!

Meah/Morgan/Berke should be an upgrade in rebounding over a banged up Mast. Not to mention you're also replacing Tominaga, Lawrence, Wilcher with Griffin, Rollie, Uhlis, Essegian - who I think all are better athletes/rebounders/defenders as a group.

I agree and also think the defense has a good chance to be better too. Replacing Jo’s Def is tough but overall I think we will take another step on that end of the court.

We were 3pt centric last year, so I think we won't see as many threes.  I would expect a lot of pick and rolls especially when Rollie is on the floor. I wonder if we will still play the 5 man out system on offense. It will depend on the different lineups we use I suppose.

Morgan is going to be getting a lot of looks in the post, as well Berke, so this doesn't shock me. Having an actual PG to run P&RS will be helpful also.

I think the way they can attack teams is much more diversified vs last year. 3 ball, p&r, post work and perhaps mismatch hunting. The lob threat to meah is also something we haven't had in a long time. Duby was the last one, but iirc, he had brick hands. It'll be interesting how it all meshes together, because if it does properly, I am super excited.

My wife heard Fred Hoiberg speak yesterday morning at the Special Olympics Breakfast in Omaha. She said he had an incredible story-telling of his own heart condition and how he learned about it 19 years ago. The only tidbit I recall that she shared is that Fred seemed confident that NU will have a great team this season. I didn't ask if anyone defined what 'great' meant. 😉

Well, if you finished THIRD last season & hope/expect to be improved & the FIRST place team lost their Best Player from last season (whom you beat btw) your expectations I would say should be High. Maybe even Great 👍

I'm sure it was more "coach speak" than 'expectation,' but it still made me pause to consider a potential championship-level squad may be percolating. And, quite frankly, that would be an incredible development in Lincoln after how the first 3 seasons of Hoiberg & Co. went. I hope for a great season, with big-time wins in the Big Dance. It ought to be a fun ride.
