Danny story of the day: He once called and asked us to sponsor a 6'8" Spanish exchange student named Xavier at Pius who would play for them and then go to NU. Turned out to be a 6 ft. guard named Pablo when he got off the plane. His Dad, who coached a team in Spain, had substituted his son. He was a nice player but never started for Pius. When his Dad visited us in the spring, I took him to meet Danny at a practice and Danny called the son Pedro, which showed the level of his interest in his Pius career. Nevertheless, Pablo remains a friend to our family today, and we are all glad we had him for a year. Don't know what ever happened to Xavier. Incidentally, Pablo played with Patrick Nee at Pius.

Second hand Danny story: Heard that Danny ended up talking to Tim on the phone at some point and brought up Miles hiring him as an assistant but did so in such a Danny Nee way that Tim didn't want Danny put through to him any more.

Met Nee when I was 7 or so when a buddy's dad was doing some cabinet work at the Devaney.  To say his language was not sterling would be an understatement.

Also learned through the interweb a few weeks ago that Nee played ball with Kareem in high school.

Yes, it's fairly well known that Danny played with Lew Alcinder in H.S. Gotta give it to Nee, he never shied away from naming his dog on-air for "Rutgers," which as a ploy to get that job, well, it didn't pan out.

I was lucky to be drawn as a coach for the day through the Rebounders Club.  Missouri game.  Danny gave his pregame speech and we exited the locker room.   I was geeked out...Danny said one thing to me...to paraphrase...this is going to be flipping fun, but remember only one darn individual on our bench gets technicals, so keep your darn flipping mouth shut.

After an Ameritus Classic round of games Danny and his wife along with Bill Byrne and coaches of opposing teams came into SideTrack. Danny and my buddy were throwing peanut shells at each other while I chatted with Byrne at the bar. Byrne told me that Leif Nelson??? a big guy from out west was going to be a beast for the huskers.

Oh man...I can hear the "Sit Down Norm" chant just reading that.  The collection of coaches we had in the 80's and 90's in the old Big 8 were epic.  Johnny, Norm, Billy, Eddie, Danny...

I remember when Billy Tubbs came into

town with Oklahoma right after he was hit by a car while he was jogging.  One of our students showed up to the game wearing a gray sweatsuit with tire tracks on the back of it!😂

Like him or not, Billy Tubbs made everyone in the Big 8 get better.
