I thought of McCray.. then I thought about his defense..

Actually, Jamel White had some really nice freshman games too..

Shields is mature as hell though.

If Shields keeps it up...we can probably say he is.

Anderson had a good frosh year too.

mccray was good, but if these last two games are indicative of what Shields is then they aren't even in the same category.  Pretty sure McCray shot less than 40% his freshman season.  Shavon is just way more efficient.  He is also miles ahead of McCray on defense

I know this goes way back, but Shavon shows Jerry Fort-like potential.  Long ways to go, though......

Those are some mighty big shoes to fill...but yeah, he's off to a good start.  He keeps it up he'll go down as one of the greats at NU.

Ryan had a better supporting cast his freshman year than Shavon does this year, I think.

yea, i don' think you can put ryan in this discussion unless you're talking purely stats.  Not discrediting Anderson, but Shields makes it look easier and has way more potential

It's going to be interesting to see how consistent his scoring is the rest of the way.  It's easy to forget this guy is a freshman that is at least a month behind the others because of his elbow injury.  He's coming on strong.

well, a road win is always good for the ol' rpi. this makes me happy. now on to upset Illinois, who's is entering a huge funk just like last season. And just in time.

Shields is an entirely better all-around player than Anderson and McCray. Shields is athletic. He can play defense against players his own size. And he can create his own shot. McCray couldn't get his own shot unless it was 25-feet away and he didn't play D. Anderson couldn't drive and he could only guard 4s. Shields is just a really good basketball player, and he looks so young. He is only going to get better and better.

I think it's safe to say we got a steal in Shields. What a great under-the-radar recruit by Doc. Sure he had a tie to Lincoln, but he that doesn't mean he has to recruit him. I'll give him credit for that.

McCray was more gifted athlete than Shields... He was just extremely lazy and got overweight/outta shape. He was also very capable of creating his own shot, but he definitely preferred to sit on the 3 point line and catch and shoot. McCray was more gifted, but from what I've seen of Shields, I'd take him any day.

2 career highs in a row is really encouraging.  He prob is the best true Frosh since Lue.  McCray was a shooter & nothing else (plus he was a major headcase).  Shields by season's end could be the leader of this team.  He's very good & he's just learning how to be a good basketball player.  Sky's the limit for him.  I really didn't expect this out of him this season.  Pleasant surprise.
