This came from reading several threads including "Are you helping us win?" and "Now or never" among others. Anyway, why don't they record a segment with Coach Miles (he'd be good at it obviously), and it would be similar to a locker room scene only Miles would be addressing the fans of the crowd? He could call us out, tell us everything we are doing wrong, question our fandom, ask us if we are helping the team win, etc. Then he could slowly build us up and turn us loose. Play it on the big screens right before the team comes out the last time before tip, tie it to the "Protect the Vault" idea, and there you have it. The one video I liked last year had kind of a crowd-rallying tune to it. It was the Morgan Freeman sound alike narrated video. I think they need to do something to get the fanbase jacked up before the game. The highlight videos and the fire on the intros this year aren't getting it done. I think this idea could work. It would have to be well written so it seemed real and not cheesy but Miles could do it.2 points

Nebraska Cornhuskers (10-7) vs Minnesota Golden Gophers (12-7) Date: Tuesday, Jan 20th, 2015 Time: 7:30 p.m. CST Arena: Pinnacle Bank Arena Capacity: 15,000 Broadcast Information Television: BTN Online: BTN2GO Announcers: Dave Revsine and Jim Jackson Satellite Radio: Sirius (Ch. 93); XM (195) Play-by-play: Kent Pavelka Expert Analysis: Matt Davison Minnesota Scouting Thread Minnesota Info Head Coach: Richard Pitnio Location: Minneapolis, MN Conference: B1G 10 Nickname: Golden Gophers Mascot: Goldy Gopher Last time out: Beat Rutgers Typical Rotation Depth: 8-9 players Opening Line: Pick'em Fun Fact : Minnesota started 0-5 in the conference before knocking off Rutgers Fun Fact : Senior Elliott Eliason hails from Chadron, NE Fun Fact : Richard Pitino and Rick Pitino faced off for the first time with the elder Pitino's Louisville team winning easily Player to watch: Andre Hollins The 6'2" Senior shooting guard is the leading scorer and 3pt shooter on a fairly balanced Gopher attack. After slumping from behind the arc for most of conference play Hollins exploded for 31 points including 7-10 from 3pt range against Rutgers. The Skinny Minnesota's promising start has been derailed during conference play mostly due to their poor defensive play. The Gophers are still turning people over with their pressure defense but have been extremely soft in the paint, especially defending the boards. The offense has been serviceable and lead the way to their only conference win by overpowering Rutgers. Aside from the Bo Ryan Experience, the Huskers have been great defensively and look to get help from their old friend the FT line in this game. Due to matchups and lack of aggression the Huskers went from being a FT shooting team to one of the worst in conference. A hacking Gopher defense should be just what the doctor ordered. This should be a fun, fast paced game but one where the Huskers have enough D and enough size to handle the outside shooting of the Gophers. Prediction: Nebraska 69 - Minnesota 64 Click here to view the article2 points

Great thoughts, will be trying my best tonight to help.If you're going to tackle a ref, Silver, make sure to take the bigger one and leave the little dude to me. Hey Norm, quit talking about the refs, or you are going to make someone VERY weary.....2 points -
Are some of the under-coaching issues on the offensive or defensive side? A very old friend of mine, who is a life-long Louisville fan, adamantly maintains that Ric Pitino is a poor in-game offensive strategist. Specifically that Pitino struggles devising plays in close games where Louisville is behind. He claims Pitino wins because of (a) superb pre-game preparation and ( b ) better athletes. Once Pitino has a manageable lead, Pitino's defenses can close out the games. However, Ric Pitino led teams struggle when the other side has adjusted to the offensive game plan. From what I have seen of Richard Pitino, it would not surprise me if he has that issue as well.2 points

The rules were slightly changed last year (with most emphasis on block/charge and a little emphasis on hand-checking). However, the new rules were somewhat enforced early in the season and then basically were disregarded during conf. play. Do you remember last year in non-conf when NU was fouling at a ridiculous rate? And scores were much higher during many of their non-conf games. However, coaches and fans bitched and moaned and ultimately won the day and by the time conf play rolled around, the officiating went back to its regular ways (at least regular as of the past 5-10 years, the period of the decline of scoring and pleasing basketball). This year, the new block/charge rule was eliminated and we are now playing under the old rule again. So that experiment only last one year (and really only 1/2 a year b/c it wasn't properly implemented in conf play last year). This issue was addressed on College Gameday this past Saturday morning. Jay Bilas was absolutely adamant that the current state of college basketball, with slow play and low scoring games, is because of the officiating in college basketball. He said that the officials this year are right back to where they were before last season began and the game is more physical than ever. He challenged anyone to go back and watch games from the mid 80s, even the title games involving so-called physical teams like Georgetown, and he said they look like "ballet" compared to today's games. He said that the game has changed in many ways over the years and various rules have been changed (ie, 3 point shot, shot clock, etc.) and scoring has changed over the years, but the one thing that has remained the same year after year after year is the average number of fouls called per season. He said that number has remained flat (on average) for the past 30+ years. Knowing this, coaches are not dumb. If refs are only going to call X number of fouls each game, what is the obvious way to get an advantage for my team? Easy! Foul the crap out of the opponent knowing the refs will not call close to every foul. In the end, the the number of foul called will average out the same even though the teams are fouling at a much higher clip. Bilas talked at length about "freedom of movement". You wonder why teams can't run Motion offense. Well, if the player off the ball is getting hand check and body checked every other step, then it is hard to get to the next spot. Motion is about crisp and hard cuts and getting to the next point. If the defender hand-checks. grabs, pulls, tugs, bumps, elbows, pushes, etc. that player on his way to the next spot, everything is going to get mucked up. It is no different than a receiver in FB who gets crabbed, pushed, pulled, etc. Ironically, the NBA has cleaned up much of this issue by simply enforcing the rules as they should be called. Even in college, they don't really need to "change the rules". The refs simply need to call all fouls when they see them rather than "letting it go" b/c they don't want to slow down the game. We talked about this issue at length early on last season and this was all discussed at length. The problem is that as soon as refs start calling a lot of fouls, coaches whine, bitch and moan along with most fans. I remember many people on this board complaining early last year about the fouls and how it ruined the game, etc. Of course having a bunch of fouls called makes the game less appealing. But the alternative is to simply let the play continue to get more and more and more physical until it really isn't basketball. There is no freedom of movement, no incentive to try and implement a true "motion" offense b/c players will just get held and grabbed, etc and it just won't work. If we truly want the game cleaned up, then refs need to be told to call ALL fouls and continue to call them until players and coaches adjust. That could take 2 or 3 seasons. And yes, that would be a brutal 2-3 seasons, but after we got thru it, and coaches and players finally realized refs are going to continue to call it correctly, then they would adjust, players would quit fouling so much, and college basketball would come out as a much better sport and have much more entertainment value.2 points

Ok Nebrasketball fans the magic run that Nebraska made last year to make the Tourney started on this exact same week. So if Nebraska wants any chance to receive a at large bid without winning the BIG TEN tourney they need to win out at home starting today and get 2-3 wins on the road and end the season 11-7 or 10-8 anything less than 10-8 conference record and BIG TEN tourney championship would be required to reach the NCAA Tourney this year. Facts are Facts everybody with the RPI where it is and the bad losses to Creighton and Incarnate Word and Hawaii this year this has to happen to make the tourney. Doable absolutely we need to score more than 55-60 a game to get there... Nobody saw the run coming last year can it happen again??? It starts this week1 point -

49er: I thought everyone knew that cybermetrics were invented by cyborgs who are greatly superior to us humans, while sabermetrics were conceived by Bret Saberhagen while he was one of those burnt out aces, like Cone and Smoltz spending the downside of their careers on the Red Sox staff with nothing better to do.1 point

Not to be pedantic or anything, but isn't it sabermetrics? Or is the cybermetrics thing a SOSH inside joke? That's been bothering me for like a day now.1 point

Don't you think Kalenta matches up better with Wisy. than she would have Purdue? I don't think Wisconsin big's are as big as what Purdue brought to the table. possibly. i am a bit surprised kalenta didn't get some minutes. she's listed at 6' 3"---so, i thought she could help out on purdue's bigs. evidently, coach yori doesn't feel comfortable enough with her game to put her in that situation-----yet. she seems to be very active when she is on the floor---hustling, setting screens, etc.1 point -

This game reminded me of the days gone by going up against A&M and Okie St. It seemed when we needed that big shot down the stretch someone stepped up and made it. I thought Brandi Jeffery played one of her best games of the year. Good minutes from the bench tonight especially Chandler Smith and Natalie R. Really like what Natalie is starting to do on the defensive end of the court. Emily winds up with 13 big rebounds. Lot better from the charity stripe tonight. Good game to get under our belts. We go to Madison now, got to get that one.1 point -

The actuary sounds like an actuary, cwg sounds like someone who is not presently geeked, Norm sounds like a nitpicking lawyer, 49er sounds like he should join SOSH, and Silverback sounds like, well...silverback. Nevertheless, everyone must agree that any streak must begin with the outcome of tomorrow's contest. Let us just hope that the Gophers continue to pull their heads back into their holes when they are on the road.1 point -

I have watched the gophers play three games so far this year. They appear to be very talented, yet somewhat undercoached...if that makes sense. When I humbly say that, these were a few of my observations: - They would defend one or two passes and then their defense would break down. Our recent style of play could prove positive. - Offensively they would look very team oriented "on occasion," but oftentimes they relied on whoever gets the first touch, shoots. They would go on binge scoring where they would score six to ten points quickly, but then stall out. - They have good inside and outside talent, yet their bigs would go minutes at a time without a touch. Overall, a game we can and should win at home.1 point -
