They were just expending some pent-up frustration over having such an incredibly craptastic football team to root for.5 points

I have read the board. I have listened to the interviews. I went to the scrimmage. Now it is time for the games to begin. Excited about the season, this is what we have all been waiting for. Nebraska in the top 25. A team in the national picture. A program on the rise. I am doing my best to sit back and enjoy the ride. But I can't help but have a few questions and thoughts as this new season begins: 1. Is this year's "bench" better than last years? - 2. Will they maintain that "eye of the tiger" and relentless defensive effort and attitude that got them to the tournament last year when they were the underdogs fighting to reach the top? 3. (And I know this one will be very controversial, but) "will some of us be concerned at various points throughout this season that Petteway is still taking too many ill-advised shots?" My initial thoughts: 1. I keep debating this one in my mind. If Leslee were healthy and playing, there would be no doubt that this year's bench is superior to last year. But without Leslee, I am not so sure and will probably have to wait and see before I can truly believe it. Although Gallegos continued to struggle shooting last year, he was a 5th year senior who knew the league, how to play tough defense, and how to play smart and aggressive. Gallegos started 18 games and played an average of 28 minutes per game. That was 3rd on the entire team for total minutes played. Regarding Leslee, I have mentioned this in another thread, but even though he only played 16.8 minutes per game, his "per 40 minutes" averages for points and rebounds far exceed the production of Moses last year. Losing Leslee is a blow and I don't think Moses is going to replace his leadership or production (although I do hold out a slimmer of hope that he can pull off the miracle and return in January). This means that the combination of Smith and Fuller have to make up for the loss of Gallegos and the drop-off from Leslee to Moses. I don't know yet, will have to wait and see. 2. This team was very poor on defense early last year. To make things worse, they fouled like crazy and put opponents to the line at an alarming rate. Fortunately, after 5 or so games into conference play (when it was absolute do or die time), something clicked and they cranked up the intensity and effort and communication on defense. Can they duplicate that level of intensity right out of the gate this year? I am sure Benny can, but what about the team as a whole? And the freshman, will they "get it" at all this year, let alone early on in the season? These are questions that remain to be seen. 3. And last, I know some on here will think I am somehow bashing or putting down Terran for even asking that question. I assure you I am not. There is no doubt that it was Terran who took the team on his back last year and carried it through much of that winning streak that catapulted NU to the tourney. However, just b/c Terran did and can do great things does not mean he is infallible. And there is no doubt in my mind that Terran and his poor shot selection played at least some part in NU's early struggles last year. As I said above, I have listened to all the interviews of the coaches and players throughout the summer an this preseason. And I have heard on multiple occasions from the coaches and players (and I particularly recall Coach Harriman say it at least twice) that on a good number of days in practice, Shavon Shields is the best player on the floor. Remember, Shavon came out like gang-busters last year, But then he tweaked his knee and he was not the same player until late in the season when he finally fully recovered. It was during the time that Shavon was hurting that Terran carried the team. But by all accounts Shavon is fully healthy now. And by all accounts he is stronger and playing better than ever. So do we still need Terran to be superman and take 15+ shots a game? Or do we need him to be more selective and take what the offense gives him and not force. it. Even last year, when Shavon was not healthy much of the year, Shavon shot 44.3% FG. Terran shot 42.6%. Beyond that, last year Pitchford shot 47.3% FG and a remarkable 41% on 3-Point shots. By all accounts, Walt is shooting the ball better than ever. Both Shavon and Walt were more efficient scorers last year, and they should be much improved this year. Now, I fully understand that Terran had to take a lot of very difficult shots b/c he was the "go to" guy late in the clock. I get that. But Terran also hucked up A LOT of quick 25 ft bombs with 30 seconds left on the clock. Or an off-balance fade away shot that wasn't necessary. And so forth. When Terran drives, he has one thing on his mind--trying to put the ball in the basket. But are there times he should look to the corner for an open 3 for Walt? Or to the elbow for an open pass to Shavon? Terran can get tunnel vision sometimes and we need him to remain team focused for all 40 minutes every game. And again, I do not thing Terran is selfish or anything like that, I just think he is so competitive that he gets in a combat mode and sometimes fails to stay the course with the offense and the system that has been implemented for the best team success4 points

i took some basic psych at dear ole peru, one would say that norm's embarrassment over the background photo may stem from his sometimes embarrassment over his sheer devotion to the NU basketball program where others especially close to him, possibly at work may not share the same sentiment. Or maybe Norm just had a really cool ass dream that beats my dream about pancakes last night out of the water (sidebar: i made pancakes this morning, that's a little thing called "true wish fulfillment"2 points -

With McBuckets gone, look for Cloggs in the lane and Drainege from outside. Don't sleep on the top foreign newcomer Czeptik though! My apologies if UNO was supposed to be the Sewer Bond Topic of Schools. Wow! I've been wondering if Cloggs was granted that sixth year of eligibility or not.2 points -

I'd like to see a birth certificate on this kid. I think he's much older. In fact I think he's wearing headband so high on his head much like Lebron did before he got hair plugs or Rogaine or whatever he did to get hair back. Seriously this kid is really good at the sport of basketball.1 point -

Brad Bigler is Southwest Minnesota State's head coach. He was also Tim Miles' starting point guard for three seasons at SMSU. In his junior season - Tim Miles' last at SMSU - the Mustangs went 28-7 overall, 17-1 in conference, and made it to the Elite Eight in NCAA D-2. Earlier today while researching SMSU, I came across a series of events that happened to Bigler in 2011 and 2012. It is heartbreaking - be prepared to leave the article feeling terrible for Bigler and infuriated at the legal system. Link It's two years late, but I wish there was something we could do to help Coach Bigler and his family. edit: I just noticed that Brian Rosenthal published a story on Bigler in the LJS yesterday here.1 point -

Okay, I already posted, but I have another reason... I cannot stand ANY other message board except shaggy bevo. (only because they hate everything and the posts are generally highly inappropriate) A guilty pleasure of mine is searching other teams boards when they lose. I LOVE basking in their misery. At HHC? I don't care what the outcome is. I'll hear real talk no matter what. Rarely any over reaction. Simply refreshing. Not to mention Norm constantly teaches me of real life-off the radar problems like kudzu.1 point -

Top 25 players for 2014-15
Norm Peterson reacted to Row6Seat10 for a topic
ESPN is conducting a top 25 countdown on this season's top 25 players. Coming in as their 13th best player entering this year is our own Rachel Theriot. No. 13: Rachel Theriot, Nebraska, guard, 6-0, junior 2013-2014: 14.1 PPG, 7.1 APG, 43 percent on 3-pointers Skinny: She seems destined to spend her time being compared to other point guards, be it as Lindsey Moore's replacement or Samantha Logic's and Rachel Banham's conference contemporary, but Theriot does fine on her own merits. Great point guards often seem to play at a different speed than everyone else, and Theriot has that ability to appear to glide while those around her grind. Only two players from major conferences totaled both 200-plus assists and a better assist-to-turnover ratio, but Theriot proved as good at getting her own points with a deadly pull-up jumper and selectivity from the 3-point line. -- Graham Hays http://espn.go.com/womens-college-basketball/preview2014/story/_/id/11793962/counting-top-25-women-college-basketball-players-2014-151 point -

Okay, okay, no need to get all grouchy. I'm not here to argue. You've made your point. Clearly for every 8,000 sloppy drunks there are always 8,000 designated drivers in every case and everyone who has a beer out at an event is always 100% responsible about how they conduct themselves. We obviously need to have more access to beer in public because God knows there isn't enough as it is now...1 point

For the record, while I stand staunchly in the pro-drive responsibly crowd, I'm not opposed to drinking in the arena. Or outside of the arena. Or on the way to the arena. Just be loud when you get there and make sure you're safe to drive when you finally get behind the wheel. Fortunately, it takes so long to get of the parking garages, you have plenty of time to go sober up at Gate 25 while the traffic clears out ... Wait, wut?1 point -
Not fair to lump together. Not at all. While plenty of those idiots you mention who think drinking and driving isn't a big deal probably do wish to have beer sold during the games, they are finding ways to be idiotic without alcohol being sold in the arena during games. And there are plenty of people outside of that idiot group who have the opinion in favor of beer being sold at games. Your logic sucks because while a majority of people do arrive at the game in a car, that doesn't mean they have to be operating the car when they leave. And just because you arrive in a car, and think it's okay to have a beer at the game, doesn't mean you're in favor of drinking and driving.1 point

Those are also probably the same guys that insist that we need to sell beer at the PBA because "we're all responsible adults and we should be able to enjoy a beer with the game if we so choose". Hold on now. Just because someone has the opinion that they should be able to enjoy a beer at a game doesn't mean that they also think it's okay to do that and then drive home. And certainly people drink and drive all the time, away from those games, even though it's not sold in the arena during the time the game is going on. Clumping the group that wants beer sold at the game with those guys who think drinking and driving is okay hardly seems fair.1 point -

That's a safe bet. That's like, "We're having a round table discussion about the Governors' race, an unopposed candidate for airport authority, and a sewer bond issue in Gretna." I'm betting the lion's share of that discussion would be around the Governor's race. Just guessing. in your analogy im assuming the sewer issue is Creighton? In your analogy assumption, let me remind you that 1620 is the official station for sewer coverage in Omaha. I'm sure there will be much talk of the 1-2 punch of Cloggs and Drainege. thats some next level analogical discussion dimes. as previous posters have said sharpe and benning have been pretty good so far, and even Bahe has keep his love of Creighton manageable, will see in about month how long this continues. My comment was meant to note that 1620 does the radio broadcasts for Jays game, not a crack at the talent. I find Sharpe and Benning to be one of the top local radio shows out there and the best one on 1620. Bahe is best when he has someone to bounce off of so he'll add to this roundtable if involved.1 point -

Early Conference Games?
a0t0w0 reacted to Norm Peterson for a topic
Not sure what the advantage would be for us as a program but one disadvantage would be that we would likely be shifting RPI killers to the back half of our schedule at a point in time where we really are wanting to make a run. Contrast that with the "Bracket Buster" challenge played late in the year, the purpose of which was to allow mid-majors to strengthen their schedules as they approached Selection Sunday. So, if we move Ohio State to December, are we going to be playing Incarnate Word in February?1 point -

2014-2015 KenPom Rankings Thread
AuroranHusker reacted to 49r for a topic
Welcome to the 2014-15 preseason KenPom rankings. Of note is the B1G, with 10 top 40 teams, and all but one team in the top 100, the conference is going to be a dogfight each and every night. Virtually every team in the conference, with the likely exceptions of Wisconsin and Rutgers should expect to finish anywhere between 2nd and 13th, depending on how players develop, injuries and whatnot. Nebraska falls firmly in the middle of the KenPom pack to start the season, and our early cuppiest of cake non-con schedule isn't going to do us any RPI favors. The four-game stretch starting on December 1st with FSU, Creighton, UIW and Cincinnati will likely go a long ways towards telling us just what kind of team we're going to have this year, I would expect to go .500 during that stretch. Diamond Head Classic will be lots of fun, it should be better than the Charleston Classic was last year. I would be disappointed with anything less than 2 wins there. And now, here are the initial 2014-15 KenPom rankings: KenPom rankings as of 10-27-14. =========================== B1G (0-0): 6. Wisconsin 12. Michigan State 14. Ohio State 15. Michigan 26.
