  1. I love the literary references. And I think we won't know the success or failure of the tournament, from a holistic standpoint, for a while yet. If it means we lost two games against better opponents than the random-draw MEAC teams we get at the PBA BUT had a good come-to-Jesus that pulls the team together (a la Miles' win-the-locker-room bit) then I don't think we can call it anything other than a success. I'll trade two early-season losses to semi-OK (UAB) to legitimately good (UMass) opponents at a neutral court for a potentially more cohesive unit that learned the trust and accountability that helps us sneak out a win or two over conference opponents later in the season. If this was just a hug-it-out team meeting that doesn't result in any changes, though, then the rose-colored glasses can come off. But that's not something we'll see in one game against a not-good SEC team...we'll have to wait and let it play out more, I think, to be able to determine if this was a success or failure.

  2. I love this board....(Actually I really do). So many complained for years about not playing enough "quality" teams. Now Miles sets out a decent OOC schedule and some would rather just "get wins" Miles almost has a way of "beating the system" when it comes to getting a high RPI and SOS. I'll trust Miles. Miles made it pretty clear as well that year 2 would be tough. We have seven new players trying to gel together. I'm going to go out on a limb and say we look pretty good by the end of the year. We live in such a "win now" society with social media that everybody wants to win every time out. We are playing an EXTREMELY young team this year, with a lot of new faces on top of that. Its going to take some time. I think Miles learned a lot about his team over these 3 games. I mean, look at what he did in game 3 by going to a zone more. I bet that he wishes he would have done that vs UAB in the 2H as well....but at least he recognized it quickly and made the adjustment in game 3. Keeps guys out of foul trouble and also it keeps athletic guards from hopefully getting into the lane easier. I was disappointed with the UAB loss for sure, but I think we got a hell of a lot more out of this tourney than beating a bunch of cupcakes!

  3. It's way too early to tell, but if I had to make a pick right now I would say it was a success. I'm basing this on our performance Sunday vs Thurs/Fri. We looked like a different team on Sunday- giving effort on both ends of the court, sharing the ball, Tai letting the game come to him rather than trying to force things, etc. I obviously would've liked us to win more games than we lost in Charleston, but I think it was a great wake up call for our team, i.e. you aren't good enough to just out score teams, you're going to have to play solid basketball within the system offensively and defensively. We also learned a lot about Leslee Smith and the leadership/dedication to winning he brings to the team.

  5. Nobody's saying fire Tim Miles. Seriously? I'm just saying you cannot call him a PROVEN recruiter right now. He's had success everywhere else he's been recruiting the talent he needs, but this is a new level for him. To say he's lighting the recruiting world up would be completely false. Heck, look at Northwestern's recruiting class. Almost getting people doesn't count for anything until you actually get one. Is Agau starting here this year? I guess not. Hammond is a good start, but forgive me for not rushing to any conclusions because of it. I trust Miles knows what he's doing, and it's easy to see his plan begin to take shape; however, the world of sports is precarious and fickle.

  6. Faulkner, on the other hand, would have seen the prose of Icedragon and rent his clothes at the thought of so many words wasted through want of use, as though they might atrophy while waiting in the dictionary of the mind, waiting unsummoned, in a purgatory of endless verbiage, forgotten and neglected while brevity doffs his victor's cap and scans the field of battle for the scattered remnants of verbosity, which have taken their leave to nurse their wounds and live to fight another day.

  8. Our liquor license was approved today. We're planning on opening the doors for business at Conlee's on Friday, December 6th. Hampton is right off the Interstate, a mere 60 miles west of Lincoln. I hope if you're in the neighborhood, you'll stop by. It will be a great spot to watch games. 4 HD TVs (65, 50, 46 and 31 inch), plenty of beverages and great food. Nice, out of the way place to watch Husker road games..... We'll even do something for people who wear their new, fancy HHC T shirts. A free beer, jar of salsa or something. To quote Doc, "Again", I'd like to thank everyone here for being really decent people, even you Creighton pukes. I know I'll see many of you in the future, and I look forward to it! Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

  9. I see a slight improvement in your spelling and grammar over previous posts. Not really a success, but not a failure either.

  10. Not quite sure how to word this. It will probably be one of my lengthier posts. But, here goes: Welcome to the cip farewell tour. In the next few weeks, I'll be fading away from this forum. Nothing bad, it's all really good, but I want to let everyone know why my involvement here will be sporadic, at best. As some of you know, I grew up in Hampton. Mrs. cip moved there when she was in high school. We've been together for 23 years, and for some reason we've always had it in our hearts to get back to Hampton. I'm a firm believer in Divine Providence, and we both agree God gave us that desire. We were waiting on his timing. Well, that timing finally came. Sometime shortly after December 1st, we will be opening a restaurant and lounge in Hampton called Conlee's (our grandson's first name). The doors that came flying open in a 7 day period for us to purchase the old Legion in Hampton are amazing. I tell people to never give up on their dreams. They will come true. It takes faith. God has your back! The reason I'm posting this is twofold. First of all, I didn't want to disappear and leave everyone wondering what happened (ala Auroran---by the way, he hasn't posted for awhile...). Secondly, and by far most importantly, I wanted to thank everyone for giving me much joy since Dave started this website. It has given me the opportunity to meet a lot of people who I now consider friends. You have also put up with my nonbasketball nonsense which makes up the majority of my posts. Thank you for that. Although I'll still be around for the next month, I wanted to let people know I won't be starting the game threads anymore. That really was fun. It's time to pass that torch. I'm saddened I won't be much of a part of HHC just when the program is on such an upward trend. However, I will stay in touch. I'm only just a private message away. With the new forum it's great that the messages go to my email account. So, when you slackards want salsa, you can let me know. Finally, I expect you guys to make an appearance at Conlee's. Those of you who live west of Lincoln have no excuse not to show up. We'll have plenty of TV's, plenty of adult beverages, and THE BEST steaks and burgers in this fine country of ours. GO BIG RED! You know there has to be a video.....

  11. I have been thinking about this for a couple of days now. I have some questions about the Charleston Classic.... 1. Was the Charleston Classic a success or failure? 2. Was it to much too soon or just what NU needed? 3. Is Miles making good decisions with scheduling or is he pushing to quickly? I think the Charleston Classic was a failure 2-1 would have been a success, but 1-2 not a good showing. I think Miles made a mistake in entering this tournament. It was a year to early. I knew when he put it on the schedule. He should have stayed with the Sun bowl classic. Where we stood a chance of winning the whole thing. We need success to build on. I guess I am of the thinking that you don't move up to play tougher competition UNTIL you can beat the guys your are already playing. The CC was an up grade in talent and we were not ready for it and our record showed. If we come in next year to the CC, with a seasoned team, we could win the whole thing. We should have played somewhere else. I think this is the second mistake he has made with the schedule. I thought he should have entered the post season tournament we were offered. I think his ego or his enthusiasm is getting the better of him. He is not make decisions that are in the best interest of the program.

  12. Would have to think Pitchford, Petteway, Webster, Biggs,Hawkins, Hammond, possibly Smith and Fuller, show a proven recruiter under the circumstances. Considerably better than what we had been sigining, with little time on the job, after years of futility. Better facilities to recruit with but other than that an extremely difficult place in which to recruit. Under the circumstances, it would be hard to envision doing much better. I suppose beating Louisville head to head on Agau. I like what I've seen so far with Miles' recruiting. He's pushing some boulders uphill. Hopefully as things improve here, so will the recruiting. Agree that longterm the jury is still out, but lots to be encouraged about.

  13. I'd rather play and possibly lose to top 64 schools than the bottom 50 schools any day. I recall we used to complain about the weak directional schools schedule we used to have that drew very little interest. Now we are complaining because we are playing the quality teams that we wanted to play for years. The teams that mean something for post season play. Just cannot win with someone people.

  14. Failure in terms of our chances of dancing at the end of the year. Although there are some positives in terms of seeing our talent match up with team like UMASS. We did not appear to be outmanned by a pretty athletic, decently coached, experienced club. We didn't catch a break with the officiating down the stretch, had arguably our 3 best players miss much of the contest in foul trouble and still had a shot to win. You never know. If we somehow got that one, we could have won the whole damn thing. Fine line. Very evenly matched tourney field. But we didn't get it done. We didn't learn how to win yet. It is not easy thing to do. Hopefully the experience will help us learn how to do so.

  15. cwg, you're spot on. We have so much to be thankful for. Even the interviewing process for prospective employees went smoothly. Everyone who applied was beyond reproach. The only one we felt uncomfortable about was a guy who applied to be head cook. He put on his resume he was an accomplished 6th grade girls basketball coach. We told him the job was for head cook, not head coach...

  16. He appears to be a bit vertically challenged, but he fills up the paint and has a pretty nice touch. It looks like he moves well and again, takes control of his space. http://baylor.247sports.com/Article/Baylor-Samir-Sehic-136346

    We are at a crossroads

. Wow. So if you're fouled simultaneously by two different defenders on a two point attempt do you get three FTs? Ok you guys are lame so I looked it up myself. On a multiple foul situation the free throws are awarded on a shots per foul basis. On a two point attempt you get 1 FT per foul so if multiple fouls (2) are called you just get 2 FTs total. On a 3pt attempt where multiple fouls are called you are awarded 2 FTs per foul. So that's where the 4 FTs comes in.

Many of you may not remember John "Hondo" Havlicek. He was a glue player and seemed to get better at the end of the game. He was one of the first players who was recognized as a supersub or sixth man. Here is what he thought of the role: Havlicek was the best nonstarter in basketball. As Boston's "supersub" he came in at either guard or forward and was usually on the court at the end of a game. Along with Russell, Havlicek routinely accumulated the most playing minutes among the Celtics during a season. Havlicek didn't mind the sixth-man role. "It never bothered me," he once said, "because I think that role is very important to a club.. One thing I learned from Red Auerbach was that it's not who starts the game, but who finishes it, and I generally was around at the finish." I have said before, and I will say it again, I like Petteway in that role. He is instant energy and can play multiple roles on the floor. Perhaps he doesn't have the sixth man mentality. I trust Coach Miles, as the year ages, the players will learn and embrace their roles.

  22. Oh, alas!! Woe is us! I mean after all, signing a guy like Webster is a huge sign of defeat. And almost getting Agau is ... well ... as good as a mile. And we didn't even get Robinson signed after that visit here. And others haven't signed up that visited unofficially. And some haven't even made the trip! And only having one guy signed up for 2015 already--an absolute defeat. And only one Rivals 150 signee for 2014. Yeah, now that you mention it, let's fire that ne'er-do-well Tim Miles. Forget that we showed well against UMass. Forget that newbies like Webster and Smith and Petteway are progressing well. Yeah. This is bad!!! And disappointing too!!! And really . . . disgusting and . . . . Seriously?
