Well he is listed at 6'8", 220 lbs and Tummala is listed at 6'7", 215 lbs... Also, if McDermott is a "big pussy", then he is a "big pussy" that just has just become a repeat selection as an AP All-American. I would take a guy that you condider to be a "big pussy", if he can put up numbers for Nebraska that will lead to him to becoming a 2-time AP All-American selection. And yes McDermott had Echinique playing next to him which made "all the difference in the world". Echinique is listed at 6'9", 260 lbs as a senior. If Tummala has a guy like Smith (who is listed as 6'8", 250 lbs as a sophomore) playing next to him, then that should make "all the difference in the world". Especially because he has the ability to put on 10 lbs each season, which would have him playing at around 270 lbs his senior season. I'd take Dougie Buckets too, but that doesn't change my opinion that I consider him to be a bit of a pussy. Echenique is a very adept and aggressive rebounder -- much more so than Smith. The knock on Smith is that, despite having the body type to play the position, he's a bit soft and lacks an aggressive mindset. He'll need to turn up the intensity quite a bit to play for Tim Miles in my opinion. If not, he'll be sitting on the bench. I feel as though I'm having an extremely difficult time getting my point across in this thread. To summarize: 1) We need at least one true power player on the court most of the time who can defend the low post and aggressively battle for rebounds to the extent that Nebraska won't find itself at a substantial rebounding deficit relative to opponents on a game by game basis. You've got to be able to rebound the basketball to win games, period. 2) Sai Tummala is more of a finesse player than a power player, and, while I like him a lot and want him on our roster very badly, I don't consider him to be a power player, but instead much more of a finesse player. We need talent and depth, period, so I'm fine with that, but my original post in this thread was in response to what I believe to be an opinion held by some here that Sai Tummala is a power player who helps solve our deficiency in that area, when I don't believe he does.2 points

He runs a clean program and graduates his players. Not exactly known for being up-tempo, though. That's really important for attracting recruits. You have to be up-tempo. Players won't go play at programs that aren't up-tempo. Unless they wear Nikes.1 point -

Hoops, I'm with ya. Sai isn't total finesse but he's not going to bang like an Echinique does. At this stage of the game, late signing period and all, the pickins are slim. This happens to be what I think is a legit kid who could fit on our roster and do some things that current players don't do. As I go down the list of players, I just don't see a kid who has his shooting stroke except for maybe a couple of the freshmen coming in. Petteway? Not from what I'm hearing. Rivers? Nope. Shields? Nah. Pitchford? Apparently not. And judging by Sai's film and what folks are saying about Pitchford, it looks like Sai can post up better than Pitchford too. Biggs? No Parker? Are you kidding me? Gallegos? Uh, no. Competition level makes a difference, sure. But have you seen that guy's stroke? And the shots he's taken on the films I've seen have been contested shots. But, even if not, that's a pretty good % even unguarded.1 point -

In a stunning turn of events, Andy Katz has reported Canadian prep star Matthew Atewe has reconsidered his decision to sign with Auburn and has recommitted to Nebraska. Reportedly he was upset by the angst shown on message boards in the Cornhusker Nation and heartened by all the positive tweets sent by fans from that basketball crazed state.1 point -

I think we need one more big guy who can hold down the middle. Needs to be an athlete. Maybe Smith is the guy. As for our last spot, I like Sai. I don't care if you put him at the 4 or the 3 or the 2. He's shown the ability to do some valuable things on the basketball floor. As Miles likes to say, "Players make plays." Sai Tummala is a player. He would have been our best shooter if he'd been on our team this year. He also can post up. You say Pitchford has no low post moves? Well, Sai does. I'd like a big dude. But I also like what Sai can do.1 point -

Sai or Smith or both?
Norm Peterson reacted to Nebrasketballer for a topic
Sai has displayed much better post up moves than Shields has. Sai has also shown the ability to shoot the turnaround hook shot, which allows him to us his body to create space between the ball and the defender. Again, Doug McDermott is 6'8", 220 lbs, played the 4 Spot and has just become a repeat selection on the AP All-American team. McDermott played next to a Center (Echenique) that is 6'9", 260 lbs. The two post players that Tummala would likely be playing next to would be Smith (currently 6'8", 250 lbs) and Pitchford (currently 6'10", 230 lbs). It would not be out of the realm of possibility for both Smith and Pitchford to put on 10-15 lbs before next season.1 point -

Red flags in recruiting?
Norm Peterson reacted to hhcmatt for a topic
It's looking more and more like the strategy to hold back a scholarship last year was a poor one. If we do end up signing Smith we essentially held back a scholarship one year for a JUCO player. Wouldn't we have been better off signing Fahro to bridge the gap with his size or even Jeran Young with his scoring ability? FWIW it's probably better we have a staff that swings for the fences and misses on occasion than one who always plays it safe.1 point -

Well, we know he's gotten in trouble OFF the basketball court, but what's he done at Florida since he's been there ON the basketball court? Anything? Buehler? He's had two seasons where he accumulated no stats according to ESPN. And one season where he averaged 5.7 minutes and 0.5 points. I vote no way. (Assuming I get a vote in the deal.)1 point -

I'll tell you what, I'll be a whole lot more worried if the recruiting battles we win end up being guys who are not the players we thought they'd be. It's OK to lose to recruiting battles as long as the players you bring in can play.1 point -

Although I've never read a book during the game, I have been caught red-handed by doing pre-gaming in the form of grading and/or homework (both at Northwestern and Nebraska!). Too bad I can't find myself in that above picture. I was probably much closer to the field. I haven't really followed the coaching search.1 point -

At the rate we're going through big man recruits, I'd sit by the phone if I were Norm. Lets never include the words "impressive girth" in the recruiting section again.1 point -

And they could do a whole lot better than Doc Sadler. Why would he leave the cushy job he has now at KU? If I was him, I'd stay there as long as I could. He wasn't going to get a good coaching job after he got fired from NU so he ended up landing a great gig at KU. He gets to be apart of one of the greatest college basketball programs. Who would want to leave that. Umm...somebody who wants to coach? Wants to coach and can coach are not the same thing. Robert Sallie or however it should be spelled becomes eligible and how things could have been so different. There is a tremendous amount of luck or things outside your control that effect this game, sometime tor the good and sometimes for the bad. Doc got hired at Kansas because someone there thought he knows something about basketball. When other coaches say something good about Miles its all, "see what they're saying about our guy!" but when other coaches often expressed their respect for Doc it was, "coaching courtesy, what else are they going to say." We respect others' opinions as long as they agree with us. Tubby Smith can coach, Ben Howland can coach, Doc has never had the success either of those have had but he can coach a bit. Let's put you at work doing whatever it is you do on TV and see how many critics show up. It's a tough job that they get well paid for so I guess they need to put up with the cries from the peanut gallery. This, to me is the major problem in America about everything - Certitude. Everyone is damn sure they have all the answers whether its sports, politics or religion, so when someone disagrees with us they can't just be wrong they have to be idiots, immoral, or have some hidden agenda to bring us all down. I do have some opinions on things that I've actually taken the time to research and think about. I think Doc can be a successful coach, but it is possible that I'm wrong and he really does suck. I don't mind the differing opinions just the certitude in which they are presented. Differences should be what gets us to think, but instead it seems to only make us defensive, snarky and insulting. Does anyone know how I'm supposed to get down off this really high box, I seem to be stuck up here.1 point -
