    Derrick Walker is N

“Derrick is a physical player who gives us skill and versatility in the post. He has played in big games over the last two years, and his experience will be an asset for us with so many newcomers on the roster.” - Coach Fred Hoiberg

Kansas City, MO native Derrick Walker will transfer and sit out a redshirt year at Nebraska after playing two seasons for Rick Barnes at Tennessee. After a promising freshman year Walker saw his playing time decrease and decided to enter the transfer portal on May 1st. Two weeks later after an unpublicized visit to Nebraska, Walker committed to the Huskers in part because of his long time relationship with Nebraska assistant Matt Abdelmassih.  Abdelmassih and St. John's were one of the finalists the first time around after Walker finished his postgrad year at Sunrise Christian Academy. Prior to his two years at the Kansas Prep school he was a two star athlete at Raytown High school where he also starred as a wide receiver at the former high school of Tyronn Lue.

Walker clocks in at 6'8" 235# and his size and lack of perimeter shooting should slot him as a center for Nebraska. The noted rebounder and verbal leader will have a year to work on his offense and physicality while acting as a mentor and measuring stick for the Huskers young post players.

First of all, I'm really starting to love this kid. Seems to have a great attitude. Puts out effort.

Second, can anyone read lips? Anyone make out what he says at about the 16:05 mark in the Maryland game?

Shamiel has just plowed into a guy and luckily drew a blocking foul rather than a turnover on a charge. But Derrick  ain't happy. He seems to be getting after Kobe Webster.

"Hey, we got to get the _uck back (indistinguishable) back up (something)." And then he's off camera and keeps going.

You need guys who aren't afraid to hold other players accountable. I like this Walker kid.

Re: the above: I think he says "Hey, we got to get the _uck back to (indistinguishable) to back." And then Kobe Webster responds and he says "No it wasn't, bro." And then he's off camera but you can still hear him going on about whatever it was. Coach on the floor. I half expect to hear him yell "YOU'RE SOFT, ANDERSON. SO FRICKIN SOFT, I CAN'T BELIEVE IT. ANDERSON, I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW SOFT YOU IS." (Doc Sadler reference. If you didn't go to any of his practices, you might not have a frame of reference.)

After watching the clip he's probably yelling at Sham.

    Everyone is guarding someone

Kobe switches to the guy at the top of the key. We are switching, not playing man. Sham decides to follow his man who is cutting instead of popping out to the 3 pt line.

Sham is guarding no one and Derrick has to go out to contest a 3 by a guy who was hot last game and buries one.

After making the FTs, Sham goes to the bench.

This one is a bit of a head scratcher.  His best season was freshman year when he shot 40% from the free throw line, scored 1.9/game and rebounded 2.2. Downhill from there.  But he's big, so there is that.

Not a jab Norm, but your original take on DW was similar to the reactions from fans when we took Petteway and Palmer. He certainly has turned into a nice player.

That was May of 2019 before I saw him play. After I saw him play, I was like ...
